Not a bad idea that. They'd work well together IMO.

I agree. I think Ramon is a fantastic tactician and has a fantastic understanding of the game. Perhaps Emblen would be a better motivator.

I vote The Black Fantastics for new team nickname if we ever move back to a black primary kit.

I also reserve the right to use it as my next band's name.

Rufer at least would be interesting at first- sure he might be able to empathise a bit with the two lads in continental Europe. Then it would probably all go to crap- but it would be a bit like Miron Bleiberg, but with the bonus of him having been a Kiwi football legend...on the flip side it might mean the end of decent soccer radio.

Farina has to be a non-starter. Papua New Guinea, Sydney, NZ? If we wanted Farina, we shoulda just kept Ricki.

Not convinced about Emblen. Guess we did ok against Japan. Ricki was ambitious for football in NZ and himself and I don't get the same buzz from Neil. Feel like I'd like to see someone absolutely dead keen for the job and hate to say that he was a part of the Solomons debacle. Know he's got his fans, but just want to see a bit more I guess- not the feeling that this might be the highlight of his career.

Ok- to put this another way- would you want Emblen coaching the 'Nix? If that's not a 100% yes, I don't want them near the AWs.

You don't ask for much.

Three for me, and two for them.

The thing that strikes me about Emblen is his apparent (in interviews) lack of ambition in wanting the role. I want someone who shows he is willing and prepared to do whatever he can to get that role - or at least sees it as an opportunity. Emblen's indifference is definitely not endearing.

Gérard Houllier would be a ideal choice, He is to ill for a full time coaching gig so this part time AW's job would suit him and he enjoys the pacific county's and its islands "As quoted when he spoke of wanting to coach Australia and/or New Zealand" Back in 2005.

It's either indifference or lack of confidence but neither is endearing.

Would be good - but not if he is sick all the time. Maybe the lack of stress in the NZ job will mean that he is healthy and happy in semi retirement.

True but then again it could be the knife in the heart once he finds out what NZF is really like. We dont really need murder on our hands - NZF in fact.

Well I don't think tonight's showing would have the selectors racing to get Neil's signature.

Why do people say we played well against Japan ? We only looked better after they subbed off their good players in the second half.

Anyway, My choice would be G.Arnold. But I think Emblem will be kept on because he is cheap and we actually played like a football team last night.

would be happy with Emblen   unless we can find someone of huge international standard.  he seems to have the players on his side and has done well in the last two games. weird he hasn't applied though..

I think we were Tactically Naive and lacked shape at the back. When you play 4-1-4-1 the DM playing the 1 needs to be rock solid and Payne wasn't. I think a combo of Ramon and Neil would work ( if we are not going to pay for a quality overseas coach) as the tactics and prep of Ramon along with Neil's Relationship with the players would be quite something. Ramon has proven he can win tough games in the islands which is key to qualifying for confeds cup which is key to funding a proper buildup to WC.

"For the questions about Neil, for me, he's got the job and it's up to someone else to knock him off," Moss said.

"I'm not just saying this because he's sat next to me, but the last two games he's come in and prepared the team so well, especially for such a young group which would be very difficult. Even before we go in to camp we're receiving information, video clips and a lot of stuff we haven't done before.

The issue then is why is Emblen so much better at preparing the team now? He was assistant under Herbert and surely could have done the same then too.

Not necessarily. It could be just an example of our national trait of not being "forward" least he appears brash, confident and arrogant.

Actually, getting outplayed quite a bit these days

Easy answer: He wasn't allowed to.

1. He might not have the authority to do things he wanted without his boss's approval at that time (Mike Mulvey Syndrome)
2. He prepared well the players he had available for the South Africa game. Might be different with the 'big name' players.

Ryan Nelsen was in charge of that.

Given that as Toronto manager he's been quite defensive, and with Ricki also being defensive, that may explain why we conceded so few but also scored so few in games he played.

Does Emblen have the 'Uefa A' coaching badge needed for the AW job?

Is that a FIFA requirement, or just an NZF one though? If it's the latter  then can't NZF just change their own rule?

Ryan is a legend, but I'd rather Emblen than him. He's way too defensive-minded.

Emblen hasnt applied ? Seriously ??

Shows a lack of something. Is he as naive as that.? When the job is advertised and will be filled from the applicants, you have to put your name in. It isnt the old boys club anymore..

Or is it ?

Personally I think he has been ok, but am hoping we can get a good quality candidate with experience from the applicants

SST are saying former Socceroos Frank Farina, Gary van Egmond and Steve O'Connor have applied for the job.

Rufer isn't exactly impressing as coach of PNG U20s (and doesn't have a great coaching record as a whole), and he has a history of rubbing people the wrong way. Not ideal if that happened with key players.

Don't know where the idea that Ricki was ambitious for NZ Football or himself comes from. Refusing to change formations so playing Killen as a DM, or picking Christie for the Mexico game, don't smack of ambition to me. And as for his ambition for himself, wouldn't he have taken one of those big money offers after the WC if that was the case? Wouldn't he have gone overseas to find a job after he left the Nix?

I still think that Emblen is our best option. It's not like we've got millions of dollars floating around to pay a coach. I'd guess the Nix pay more than the AWs.

If Ricki had great/highly paid overseas offers he would have left but for all the noise the only firm offer was coaching in Sth Africa.  He was close to getting an offer as an assistant to Avram Grant at West Ham, and he was holding out for that, but it was pulled late on and he stayed with NZF and the Phoenix

Normo's coming home

I must admit I find Emblen's comments a little unusual.

From what I know, he has not gotten his licence because of the cost. Waitakere would not pay for it and Springs wont on the off chance he gets the top gig and leaves (thus paying for something they cannot use)

The reality is, he will have to bite the bullet and get it done at some point. A little bit of enthusiasm for the role would be a good look for him. He may not be a guy that's big on the hoop jumping thing but you don't make comments like 'I have not applied/they know where I am/I'm happy to be a bone to someone elses dog'. He doesn't need to be arrogant about it but something like 'I've enjoyed this two game stint and would like to stick with it if the national body will have me' would be a better look for him.

Mind you, this is the just the stuff in the public and the message could well be different behind closed doors. I ask if I was an overseas guy looking to apply for this job and all the noise is that they temporary man is more than likely to get the job, would I be inclined to go to the trouble of applying?
