Just one of those players every country produces who scores a lot in the domestic league but is pants for his country (Andy Cole: 75 goals in three seasons before his England debut in 1995 - one goal for England in 15 apps, against Albania)
Certainly has been good for the Nix so far - but he always flatters to deceive.
Remember when he scored twice on debut for the NZ Knights and even the big Aussie clubs thought he was the cat's whiskers?
Sydney soon found he couldn't score in a brothel and released him.
Mediocre scoring record till a couple of years ago at Newcastle.
Was pants for Canterbury in the national league 2005-2006 (15 apps 0 goals).

2nd Best.....I'm disappointed, like everyone, we didn't progress to the World Cup as we did four years ago but your posting above is really pathetic and so Riki lick arse. Not tracking Mexican runners defensively on our right was the reason for the 3-0 half time score due to Riki's ball watching zonal defense set up, sadly perfected on the night by Durante.

You will probably get banned for that.

Again I avoided the match day thread and people saying stupid shit like 'I hate Brockie'. This forum has a bad case of the Goldilocks Syndrome. "We played too defensive and got thrashed. We should have attacked more" "We played too attacking and getting opened up, we should defend more" Once again, the reality is, they are ranked in the 20s for a reason because we could have played with 13 men, and they still would have beaten us. They know who they are.

Ricki put out the team of the future (or the team the fans wanted) and for the most part, they played with reckless abandon and positive intent. They chased everything hard but in hindsight, an extra midfielder would have been better than a striker and they might have shapped better in a 4-5-1 (I think thats been mentioned?) The reason being is that we got split open a bit through there when we lost possession (James was quite guilty of that for all the good things he did). An extra body in the middle would have worked better I think and helped with the possession we had. It would have allowed McG to sit a little higher and be the outlet for James.

Mexico really sat off us in the second half once again and it allowed us to play. The ignorant few will say "Why did we not play with this team in Mexico" and the answer is that team would have got slaughtered worse in Mexico than 5-1 had we played this team in that manner. Mexico did not have to work as hard to split us open because the space was there but then as said last week, the reason why we sat deep was because the gaps in behind get exposed and thats EXACTLY what happened tonight - we took it 3-0. When they pushed forward, they came at us with pace and numbers. Durante got found out as an international CB and with two games like that on the trot, I think his days are done and Smith did not exactly perform to a level across both games that makes me think his performances were an anomaly either.

People think the Mexican goals were offside - they were not (a replay of Fallons is not favourable for onside though). The only mistake the referee made was that he missed one penalty and from where he was, he would not have been able to see it through the Mexicans body so all the talk of corruption (Javier) is really just a load of absolute toss. I thought both sets of officials did very well.

People that give Brockie shit and all the hate speech, he won the penalty and most teams give that person the right to take it. If I or any other poster were in the EXACT same position as he was with 41 games and no goals, we would have taken it as well. It was just not a very well taken penalty. Selfish? Nah I don't think so, he earned the right to take it. If Smeltz had missed, they would have said 'Why did Brockie not take it' I felt sorry for him to be honest.

In terms of players, I thought that Roux had an OK debut. Because of his continuous balls into the box, he cut out the man in front of him - Marco whom when he got on the ball, looked dangerous. Tuiloma played more ball to feet and that meant Kosta got involved more on his side. I don't think Marco played like a guy out of shape at all - he played like a man starved of the ball because instead of getting it from the RB, it went route 1 into the box. Even Harry was pointing it out. Tuiloma looks very relaxed and in a tighter game, he wont be allowed that first touch where the ball can roll 5 feet in front of him. I thought he played within the team plan better but then was so naive playing an offside trap. Fenton came on and looked better as an international RB than a club RB. Henderson put himself about, Kosta had a good game (although a bit of a black hole) and I actually thought Brockie was not as bad as others think. McG didn't do too much but nothing really bad, James made things happen but then coughed up the pill too much and i've already mentioned that I didn't think much of Smith or Durante. Smeltz looked definitely short a gallop. I'm on record of saying that Fallon is a has been but he has played well across both legs so I raise my hand in humilty and say hats off to the guy. He seems like a really genuine person that embraces his faith and incredibly positive and you need those guys that are genuine.

You can't forget Ricki and what he has done over his term. He takes some lumps but he also did some good stuff too. The one thing that disappointed me was prior to KO on Tony Veitchs Facebook page he posts this: "Listen to this guys: here's the word from one of the All Whites... Ricki Herbert 'has not talked to the team' since the loss in Mexico.. wow.. that is totally bizarre...!!!!" When he got called out about it he basically said that his source was a text from one of the players in the team that was sent to a mate of his and he had seen the text. Shit like that (whether its true or not) is a bit low class and not needed before kick off. Ricki was gone in 90mins, and had already announced it so who cares. Ricki has left this team in good shape for the next man coming in and for those that say he does not pick or play youth, there are a boat load of players in this team that can be there for nearly 2 WC cycles.

In all, we played ok tonight and it was an enjoyable watch. There were parts in both legs where we were allowed to play but the reality is, Mexico showed why they are ranked where they are and we are ranked where they are. You cannot argue with the score line across both legs.

Good assessment. I was in aisle 7 for the game and thats how I saw most of it. Smeltz should really have taken the penalty though. The remark about Fred de Wanker should be post of the day. Brilliant. Changes need to be made in the NZF and that aplies to administration etc, not just coaching.

Was Brian Turner asleep the whole game? He sat down at at KO and stayed there fr most of the half time break and didnt move. Mind you Ricki only got out of his seat twice. The first time was at half time and the second was at full time.

going to the asia route is mandatory, competition to play at some qualifiying rounds, it is time with the new pool of players coming through  you have almost 30 under 26 years old players to build around plus some veterans.  The entrance of NZ and Oceanian alongside Asia , can create better chances for nz players to play in asian leagues

disagree. it is years and years away from being beneficial to us. our U17 and U20 wont even get close to a World Cup and are unlikely to get picked up/noticed by clubs (Thomas etc) playing against Oman and Vietnam

tbf, it seems that people did enjoy this game a lot more than the first leg, or any other recent NZ game.  In a fixture that 99% right minded people knew we had absolutely no chance of winning, it appears that people preferred us losing while trying to play football as opposed to getting spanked when not - who would have thought that would be the case?

In Mexico we were shellacked 2-0 in the first half playing a defensive 5-4-1 and it could easily still have been a worse scoreline at 45

so I don't see that tonight was any worse really and was sure as heck a lot more entertaining and better for the development of NZ football

one quicker, experienced CB, a little more general experience and organisation at the back and we'll get close to where we were in 2010 and have more potential to develop

was great to see some of the younger talent

Well played Mexico; fantastic to see their pace, touch, accuracy, interplay and runs and good to see our guys trying to match them and making a dent when Mexico backed off

respect going down tonight, beaten by a better team and yes, I would much rather see what we saw tonight than the rubbish we saw for 45+ minutes at the Azteca.  just my opinion

If Ivan, Wood and Reid had played I think we might have snatched something. Brocks wasn't fouled but given that a penalty was awarded yes, the keeper should have been given the boot.

That was Shane's 50th AW full international, Brocks should have let him take it.

Interesting stats:

Name                      Full Caps  Full Caps     Total Caps  Total Goals

Jeremy Brockie      42              0                   46               0
Shane Smeltz        50              23                 56               24

The above includes today's game.  Brocks has played all over the park but should have scored before today, no doubt over who the taker should have been.

It's funny to read this, specially when he gets lots of crap from Mexican fans (me included)... he has size, good tactical awareness and a great technique, sadly, he's reaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaally prone to brain farts... his slide tackles are just simply something else, always clean and beautifully done, but again, he's really prone to brian farts so I don't want him anywhere near the first XI in Brazil.
He had a good season at PSV tho: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cngvmAE1GRg
Both Stuttgart & PSV fans had that love-hate relationship with him for the exact reason...

Agree. We played with a team that threw caution to the wind and until the first goal came, the Mexicans looked a bit flustered. I think had they had a man sent off, they still had enough class to win. They just have such exquisite timing on that pass that splits everything open and its a joy to watch, even against us.

I don't think we are a team thats 80 something in the world based on tonight. If the new man can get this team playing in this manner all the time and tweak it to shore up the middle and defense, then we have a bloody good team sitting there ready to go.

The board and administration have to come up with a program that gives this team the ability to be able to perform. It would be irresponsible not to do so.

I also thought Sigmund might have come on for Durante and I was surprised he did not.

Vader some well thought out words there - agree much better to read than swearing at players and questioning their desire. Really good to see the team running their guts out to the end, even at 8-1 down on aggregate. We were ultimately a long way off the pace but a lot of good signs there tonight - hopefully we get some games in the next 12 months.

Scotland is kind of improving under Strachan, sadly my favourite scot player McFadden is not in the team anymore, he was class, iceland thought they could beat Croatia away, because you defeated the balkans home and away.  You could play Argentina in Buenos Aires and bring the guy that scored that goal vs the Orange

The penalties (mysky)

1st one, Brockie was never going to recover the ball to shoot because of a heavy touch and it was going out. No card was the right call I think after all the challenge was not a bad one. He got enough of the Brockie to make a difference and Brockie played to the touch he got from the keeper and down he went.. There was also a defender on the goal line so not a red card

2nd one not given, well it was a definite ball to the arm but the ref was right behind the player and would have needed x-ray vision to have seen through the Mexicans body

3rd one, when Kosta was crossing the player slid in with his arm out in front of him to stop it - hand ball although maybe a bit harsh.

Problem with Brockie is unless you give him the ball inside the box he literally does nothing throughout 90 minutes (aside from give away fairly dumb fouls or drift off side).  In a game where our attacking play looked un-balanced he added very little.  I said before the game that he should have been left out for another midfield body although with the squad we had there I'm not 100% who that person could have been.  It's a pity Keat or Howieson wasn't in the squad so we could see what a 3 man midfield looked like.  These are I hope fair criticisms of his play in your eyes good sir.

As for whether this match justified the tactics at the Azteca - well everyone's angle on this will depend on their agenda.  I have always said that what was lacking in the away leg was (a) a plan when we had the ball and (b) pressure on the ball.  Well we had both of the tonight and we looked a lot better.  I still think the "tactics" in Mexico were no such thing, plus were executed very badly in that we sat far far too deep.  I personally think tonight showed that with a more balanced approach we could have done a lot better over there.  Not have won, but at least put more pressure on to make it more difficult for them and hopefully kept us in the tie for the second leg.
