Honestly think, based on that display, that we have the makings of a decent team going forward from now. Need some work on our transition speed and our buildup in attack but I think the signs are promising

2-4 not a bad result.  Plenty of young talent for the future, considering Reid comes back into the squad.  Fantastic crowd in Wellington. 2015 U20 World Cup in NZ. Future looks good. Good-bye Ricki ...All the best

Roux was great on the right and left - fast and skillful. Glad he picked NZ to play for.

So, who will have the worst  World Cup  play-off results  -  us or Jordan?

Jordan lost 5-0 at home to Uruguay last week - they play again tomorrow NZT away in Montevideo....

Will be interesting - it may become a blow-out as several Jordanian players have quit the team and refused to travel

There's always some one worse off than you......

We'd beat then, I get the feeling Uruguay will spank them

Before this play off,if I had been offered an away goal and then two at home by someone I would have bitten their hand off and thought we could indeed have made it to Brazil. Never thought we would leak nine.

tuiloma is getting skinned.  not his fault, you don't just throw a back 4 together in a few days

smith and durante have never played as a pairing.  just like ivan hadn't played in defence for ages before the 1st leg.  our limited preparation is made even worse by herbert not building these combinations within the team in the games he's been given

Agreed. Stand out player for me. Looks to be the solution at RB. Don't know if Tui's the long term solution at LB, especially if he keeps being played at DM at OM, but I think he'd do a decent job there for us in the interim

Good effort from the AW, but many balls lost in midfield in simple pass situations, But it was a step too high to face el Tri, in a home and away series. And the offside trap defence was awful.

That was a hell of a lot of fun.  I said before the game I didn't think 2 would be enough in central midfield and I think that was the case in the end.  We looked comically open at times.  James, Roux and Kosta were the standouts for me (think Kosta needs to learn when to pick a pass though).  Thought Durante really struggled over 2 legs.  And Brockie - if someone could get hold of him 6 or 7 years ago and taught him how to play football he could be a great player.  But he just doesn't understand the game.

Great spirit to keep on pushing at the end there, I really enjoyed that

Promising signs but still lack depth

Fallon has been good since he came on. Doesn't deserve the bad rap he gets from many on here. Well take goal.p>

I've never understood it either, I#ve seen him play more then nearly anyone else and never thought he desirved the BS some serve up here.  His main issue at Argyle was that he's not fastest and is a target man not a striker, not the crap that gets spouted here.

Only moan I have at RH today is that he bothered with Brockie.  Should have started with Fallon and not pulled Smeltz.  Fenton played well today too I thought.

Really good signs for the future! feeling a lot better now. Just a shame that this side was only put out now, four years to prepare and 3 guys getting debuts in the playoff is criminal!  had they been working together for a year or two, the defensive shave could have been better.

Lets hope we can build for next time round, and not have to play a team of Mexico's caliber

Agree for the most part. Don't think James stood out for me - he huffed and puffed a bit - though I think, like you say, he would benefit from having another CM in there with him to give him shorter options. I really think he struggled in the link play a bit because the gap between the frontline and the midfield was massive at times. He looks best when he plays those short, penetrating 10-15yd balls rather than trying to dink balls in to the front men or spray long diagonals. When he pushed forward to try and close the gap we got exposed in front of the back line when they counter attacked

Can I say we miss a target man in the first half, we still swing crosses in but for the GK catching practise, Smeltz and Brockie are same type of strikers certianly...

Barbarouses are busy in midfield and Roux, what a player and I already recommanded to the Norwich City messageboard, we need that kind of fullback!

really impressed with storm. MOM for us. Bill looked promising, as did fenton. Rojas and Kosta we busy but not always effective. just add a few passes to their game tonight and we would have opened up their defence a lot more.

future is looking bright for the AW, despite not going to the WC

Think the second goal is his driving run from the back and create their chance, versatile in both fullbacks!

Think they don't want play off side trap, but the both new 2 fullbacks join the attack too frequently, no doubt because we need to chase 4 goals, but center half should scream them to come back which from the screen you did not see any instruction by Smith or Durrate...

Nz failed to prepare,  and the altitude factor is a big factor,  for any team that plays at the azteca, some concacaf teams are use to it,  but the sea side 0 level of altitude countries like Argentina and Uruguay are not up to there, we usually lose there as well, the playoffs were killed the other day..  But now you have like 25/30 good young players to choose from the didnt have stage fright, bar a few mistakes, in the 4th goal, and roux played good up front but a few times we was outclassed by the  mst experienced mexican, something that was gonna happened, because some were debutants,,..3 debuts for competitive games... and the 2nd half was all for nz,  the future is bright...bring the catalunyan manager or someone that wants to invest his knowledge in this youngsters,  now you are building for the future,  its up to the nz football and your kiwi football people there to get the road easier next time to Russia

Great sign to see those good young players come through. Some weren't ready or known really a few years back so can't blame Herbert for that. But in the end, a traditional strength, our defensive organisation was appalling. Alarm bells were there early with Durante done for pace. Some of the back four had just met each other, let alone played as a unit.  Campaign was a screwup since Oceania thing. No need to re-visit that now. Most important thing is the quality of the new guys, something that won't be lost on any decent coaches who apply.

Where we were at in the second half of the second leg in terms of cohesion and effectiveness, is where we should have been at a few months ago during friendlies. If only the team had about six more games together between the last Oceania qualifier in March and these play-offs....

Will be an interesting time  on these forums in coming months with speculation about the new AW's coach.

New NZF CEO to be announced in next few days apparently....

Who will it be?

Let's be serious, Mexico was already walking in the pitch long ago...

Edit:

There you have it, we just tried something once again and there's the fourth...

i want mexico in the group please!!! so we can butcher you in a carnage back again as usual,  Televisa wont help with Argentina's front runners    your big money's dark men paid it back,  fifa  and the swiss-cheater uncle  Sepp, very happy... smart guy herrera, local players, mostly from america he was tricky, but needs to stop talking

Far far better performance. Brockie you greedy fuck. The crosses are still a complete mess, but the

young guys look good, hope for the future, didnt like how herbert sucked up too management though with

his speech with dewhurst.  all in all, this was probably the best we couldve hope for, must of been amazing

to be there when fallon scored.

Just got back, overall pretty happy with the way this team is shaping up.

Thought Durante was appalling, Brockie looked lost again.

Smith was immense, Bill and Roux looked the goods, Costa had a good game, Rojas was good but a little slow (that play where he almost dribbled through their whole team.... wow). I do think we are one DM away from a really good team.

Well I'd hope Mexico were always going to produce much better teams than us with their huge population, financial input & passion for the game.

We have the population of Sydney, little money and not much passion amongst the general population for football...

We're producing  a few good players like Rojas, Roux, Thomas  and Wood but many of our team are not top professional standard.

We can't afford world-class coaches in NZ  - and  can't  even afford for our team to play regularly....

Having said that, actually there aren't many teams with our small population above us on the FIFA rankings...

Well said. That is why we can excel at sports only a handful of other countries play.

Actually, getting outplayed quite a bit these days

That was actually an enjoyable watch...the boys gave it there all, and although Mexico were a class above us, we played alot better, passed it around quite well, created chances, never gave up...the youngsters all did well, the centre backs are a bit slow though (Durante and Smith), but over all, although we lost, I feel we may look back at this game (say in 2018 qualifyiers) and say that this was the start of a new era for NZ football.  The crowd was fantastic, well done to you guys who were there, Im sure the NZ and Mexican supporters will be having a great night.

Much better to watch than the Azteca game. Pleased Ricki finally released the youngsters and they pressed forward. Roux was good and Tuiloma will get better. Costa was a buzzing bee but Rojas and Smeltz showed effects of injury layoff and faded. Had Reid been available instead of Durante I believe this back lineup of Reid, Smith Roux and Tuiloma would have made us much more competitive. Would have Liked Fallon to have had more time and certainly replaced Brockie at half time. The two I didn't think should be there were Brockie and Durante. Don't think Brockie reads a game well. Would have liked to see more of Henderson. Thought Fenton showed composure.

Overall 3-4 would have been a fair result. The future looks good when you throw in Reid and Wood. Hopefully Fitzgerald (J league) and Ryan Thomas (Holland) will get a chance now that Ricki's gone.

I feel much better now. Lets plan ahead for the next Confederations Cup (2017) with this exciting crop of young players.
