New Zealand Women's U-17s

Why is it (from my limited view of the U17s here a few years back) that the tecnical ability of goalies is so much poorer than the other 10 on the pitch in women's football?

Or am I just wrong?

I think it is because it's a position not specialised in until they are 13/14 so takes a few years to catch up to the outfield players who most likely started in the 6-9 year range.

Then they are lucky to get decent training. I know a girl who trialed at fed level a few years back as an outfield player, saw she wouldn't make it, trialed as goalie got in, received 3 actual goalie training's over 2 seasons, rest of time trained as an outfield player and was goalie for the end of training games for the balance of her "Goalie training".

I think things have improved now with fed Goalies getting goalie specific training each session, but it may take a few years for us to see the improvement.

we play too zonally when Spain have width and then play in pockets of space which we are not prepared to track the player into.

pen could have been retaken considering how far keeper came off line.

And Japan edged past Paraguay today ..,by 10 goals to nil!

Can you elaborate on the "Big Money paid"?

Not as much as the Canadians paid for their U17 coach I take?

Spain looked like one of the most Indivually talented teams I have seen so far at that age group

We don't have enough quality players that were close to the Spanish girls

This NZ U17 team is the first that has been totally grown from the NTC programme and out of the 4 WC teams 2008/2010/2012 looks the weakest! It will be interesting if the next crop are any better I hope for sake of women's football it is.

Context is important here - NZ played no qualifying matches due to the Pacific countries not being financially able to field teams and were appointed as Oceania qualifiers without kicking a ball.

By comparison, in the toughest qualifying environment in the world for women's u-17's, Spain qualified undefeated as second best side in Europe, losing on pens to Germany in the final (and conceded three goals in their eight qualifiers). Spain had thrashed Germany 4-0 in the group stage of the Finals and England 3-0 in the semi. 21 goals scored in 8 qualifiers. So us losing 3-0 was pretty credible.

2010: Euro u-17 champions   2011: Euro u-17 champions  2013: third 

Spain's players mostly come from the womens' teams of the men's clubs like Barcelona, Athletico Madrid, Real Sociedad, Real Betis etc. - so you'd expect their coaching and resources to be somewhat ahead of us!  

Paraguay: semi-finalists in all four South American u-17 championships ever held (two third place finishes including last time)

We have a good chance of finishing third in the group ahead of Paraguay on goal difference if we keep the score down against Japan.

Global Game, they may have secured a point, but it was against a team which shipped ten in their next game! Mark my words, this current crop of Young Ferns isn't much chop.

There are a mere handful of quality players sprinkled throughout the squad who are good enough to compete and make their mark at this level now, Cleverley and Puketapu most notably. A couple of them are eligible for the 2016 FIFA U17 WWC Finals in Jordan, so hopefully that squad will benefit from this experience.

Not sure why Satchel was playing on the left (for one and half games) when her left foot is very weak whenever she got to the byline.

Improved defensive performance v. Japan - though Japan only started three players from the Paraguay rout ("thanks for sparing us, Japan!")

but some of the lamest goal attempts I've seen in my life. These players need to learn the fundamentals of striking the ball with a bit of power.

No one in the side looked a capable goal scorer.

Gee.  Japan vs Spain in the final.  Both teams from Group C where NZ lost 3-0 and 3-0 against the World Cup Winners and World Cup Runners-Up.  Just sayin ...

Great appointment for a number of reasons.

I like this appointment, he seems to have worked hard an proven himself as a coach at a national level. Unlike the lads u17 coach

his work at federation and national level has has proven success which he is being recognised for. Not sure the other guy has done the same, maybe won youth league with ACFC youth team but really its harder to lose it then win it for them! I have heard questionable things about his actualy involvment at red bull.

Well done to GT and the squad on World Cup qualification.

Yet another OFC women's qualifying tournament where NZ was not remotely challenged by any of the opposition.

While it's great that our women's teams get to play at all the FIFA tournaments, it makes the qualifying tournaments completely uninteresting.

 This time around: 55 goals scored, zero conceded in NZ's five victories.

Would you feel happy that your daughter is going to a tournament in Jordan, on the the border with Iraq and Syria (and Israel)...volatile mix and such a tournament would no doubt be a target by terror groups in that area. I hope security is really up to it, and even then, that is no guarantee that something won't happen

Group B final matchday was very interesting (following via twitter) to see who would make it to SF. For a while it seemed like Cook Islands may overcome a bit of a goal difference hurdle to make it out of the group. They conceded a late goal, and a late goal in the other match, meant they didn't quite pull it off IIRC; but it was a fascinating end to the group stage.

Costa Rica (2014 hosts) had lots of nasty spiders and snakes and the players/staff/supporters appear to have got through that OK.
