Round 3 coming right up!

Pride and the Nix both unfancied sides in this league but come off decent performances last weekend.

Despite travel fatigue AU should easily beat Central.

Too many dropped points for a decent Wellington Utd team so far... need to beat a good Eastern Suburbs this weekend.

Springs vs Petone you would fancy the hosts but hard to pick off results so far. Petone already beat WCR.

And maybe game of the week - competition leaders (for now) Southern take on NRFL champs WCR who could surge in front with a win

2-2 at half time between the Nix and Canterbury United.

Nix keep getting pegged back very soon after scoring which is a bit frustrating
11 Oct 01:24
The score says 2-1 to the Nix.  Stupid scoreboard was wrong.

A few interesting ones here.

Petone v Southern should be a close one with both in the middle pack - Southern got a draw away to a better WU side but were perhaps a bit fortunate there.
Pressure on Eastern Suburbs to beat a competitive Canterbury team after losing on the road last week and still with all the other Auckland sides to play.
Routine win for Springs.
You'd think Auckland United will have no trouble with the Nix in the capital, but perhaps not cut and dry.
Big game between WCR and WU. Two good teams but both slipped up already

Big win for Southern yesterday! Couldn't make it so will have to see the highlights! As for Central and Canterbury..... oh dear

Glad I don’t play in goal for Central

It really does feel like Central are set up for failure, which must be demoralising for the players even before results like this one - so I guess credit to them for turning up and giving it a crack despite the odds.

2027 and the proposed all club 10 team National League can't come soon enough.

Was surprised to see the ref blow for a drinks break after 30 minutes in the ES v Canterbury clash.  Not sure if the Dunedin based ref was a little unwell, or perhaps not used to the 20 degrees weather!

Petone already beat Central 3-0, no idea why it was played midweek.

Top two chase is probably already over for WU, but will be keen to prove a point against the Nix reserves. The Nix of course beat them in the Kate Sheppard Cup earlier this year but are generally worse come national league.

Springs vs Eastern Suburbs - both are decent sides and will hope to advance their grand final hopes, good matchup.

Auckland Utd v WCR - clear game of the round; in-form Auckland Utd gotta be favourites to get revenge on WCR for nicking the northern premiership title. For WCR a loss would be bad with ES and Springs still to play.

Southern v Canterbury - always a feisty matchup and while Southern have had the edge over recent years, Cantabs snuck a win last year. With form so far and squads though, you fancy a home win.

Petone have a pretty young squad so I think a few of them are playing u19’s in Napier
I have horrible opinions
27 Oct 18:33
  • Wellington United get a 4-1 win over the Phoenix with a hattrick to Laskey in the first half. Masey Fraser scoring a banger for the Nix only goal.
  • Eastern Suburbs with a 2-1 win over Western Springs
  • Auckland United claim the points and top spot with a 1-0 win over WCR
  • Southern take the South Island derby with a 4-0 win over Canterbury, also putting them as the highest place Non-Northern team up into 3rd.
I'm an optimistic pessimist.
I'm positive things will go wrong.

Winter leagues from 2027

https://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/360869918/nz-football-announces-national-league-shake-historic-first-womens-game

The new structure will be the first time an entirely club-based national league has existed in New Zealand in women’s football.

NZ Football’s general manager of competitions and international events Lisa Jones said it was “exciting” to be able to release these plans.

“The main feedback that we've received from our stakeholders is that currently the season is way too long, so we wanted to obviously reduce the time that the season goes for. There was a lot of feedback, particularly around volunteers and the load of volunteers operating for 10 months of the year.

“That was a big driving force behind it.

“And there was also a real push towards doing a full two rounds nationally. At the moment, we do those regional phases, and then they only get one round to play best against best. That was a real push from the clubs, to make that a two round competition, so we put those two together.”
30 Oct 05:36
Long overdue for the women's game and hopefully the money from consistent mens and womens world cups can continue to fund these competitions too. Time for everyone to earn their place on merit, and for everyone to select their strongest squad.

What’s this about Springs getting docked points from the CU game?

Ahh it's in the beginning of the article. But hey reading is actually soooo early 2000s.
If only journos sent stories out implanted in Tik Tok cat videos, then everyone would be well informed.

Title-chasing Western Springs have been docked a point in the women’s National League after the club fielded an ineligible player.

JR in his reports has it as ...

It was a blow Springs could ill afford, given there's a possibility they could lose the point gained from their come-from-behind 3-3 draw at Canterbury United Pride earlier this month for fielding an unregistered player. Apparently Maika Boonekamp may not have been signed in time to play in the National Women's League - a final decision is pending.

...it would be nice if NZF were to mention the appropriate regulation number that was breached.   In their press release ...  https://www.nzfootball.co.nz/newsarticle/159299?newsfeedId=2031866 they do say

On 6 October 2025 Western Springs, in their game against Canterbury United Pride, fielded the player, breaching the women’s National League Championship competition regulations.

I know they can have an extra player from anywhere with Marissa van der Meer turning Pro so that is Maddie O, and they can have 3 guest players from non-NRFL clubs so that includes BCL, and I would've thought this player would fit into one of those two spare places.

Be nice if journos actually gave the detail behind it which is obviously what was wanted so we didn’t need to rely on a forum

No surprises so far this round. Decent match between WCR and Springs last night with the hosts coming out on top. Puts them in 2nd for now with a few chasers pretty close. Springs not out of it by any means but can't afford any more mistakes.

The other games... not close unfortunately. Comfortable win for Auckland Utd away to Petone (3-0), and idk what happened, but Wellington Utd destroying Canterbury 8-1 in Chch. Scored 3 in a 10 minute salvo before half time then another 3 in a 7 minute salvo after the restart. Ouch.

Eastern Suburbs vs Southern should be a goodie tomorrow - tbh on most metrics you have to fancy the hosts, and a win either way takes that team into second. Southern have only beaten bottom four sides so far... can they prove their quality by breaking their duck?

Oh and Phoenix reserves play Central. Eh.

Some decent fixtures again. Welly United could and should keep their grand final push alive at home to Petone. Southern to beat Central by 3+ like most do. On form WCR to win in Chch. Eastern Suburbs should beat the Nix. Western Springs badly need to beat Auckland Utd.... but they probably won't.

Big 7-0 win for Wellington United... very dominant performance.

Scored twice very early, Hannah Pilley from outside the box then Nat Olsen capping off a nice move, cruised for most of the first half before a nice free kick from Sarah Alder made it 3-0 at the break.

Petone seemed to settle more in the second half despite a red card (second yellow), Oliver-Bell and Renee Bacon with some good combinations up front, but WUs defence still on top. Until United made a few key subs and set the game alight again, smashing in four more in about the space of ten minutes from around the 70th to the 80th minute, former pro Maggie Jenkins with two of them and they were cracking efforts too.

Wellington United move into 3rd for now - still a chance of reaching the Grand Final and boosting their goal difference aplenty too.

Unless Southern want to throw a spanner in the works :)

Also, be interesting to see if the Nix have any of their wider squad playing over the next 2 weeks to get up the match fitness. They haven't used their (women's) ressies like they have in previous years.

Final will be held at Keith hay park - much better than north harbour.

Fantastic that NZF have listened on this one!
19 Nov 09:51
Must have been a bad tackle (so late the camera had panned away) that silenced the commentators and drew the red card in the WCR-ES clash.

I don't have a problem with the ref taking advice from the 4th official who was much better positioned to upgrade from yellow to red.
23 Nov 06:14
Dramatic last game for the Nix Reserves v WCR, Emily Lyon put WCR ahead in the 95th minute only for Alyssha Eglinton to equalise in the 97th.
23 Nov 06:44
Have to feel for Wellington United not making the final after 5 straight wins.

Those away losses to Springs and Rangers cost them

Downside of a one round league, gutted but also pleasing that we beat both the finalists, on to next year
