Great result today I think a few of us might need to eat our words, I know one game doesn't make a season and there's a bit of dissention in the ranks already but at the end of the day Malcy's tbere to get results and it'll be interesting to see how the season progresses - maybe we should place some side bets now?

As far as Marc Chidley goes it's the best thing that could ever happen to Oago United maybe then everyone will have to stop questioning where all the money goes!!

while we've got some decent results (vs the aucks and tw) if we're gonna do anything this season re a playoff challenge the three games before christmas are vital.

vs Waitakere (home)
vs Waikato (away)
vs Canterbury (home)

while i'm realistic about the first game, if we're gonna do anything we need min 6 points between now and christmas.

The cutoff for the top 4 last year was 23 points, if we could get 6 or even 7 points from those three games which would put us on 10/11 from six games and be still in the top four picture.

of course we could just as easily get one or two points (we should at least draw with canterbury) and be enjoying life in the bottom two again but i'm quietly confident with coburn back and our cantabs in good form we mite just have a chance.

Good Luck to Chidley as he has devoted a lot of his time to Otago United as well as to the Dunedin Technical Club at the same time. I have always found him to be supportive and flexible for players. There were always rival grudges/moanings from non-Dunedin Technical supporters over the years most are really heresay trash. I think that he has done as well as can be in his role as Otago United's General Manager.

Otago has to be the hardest region to fund raising out of all the NZFC. It's that Scottish mentality. Jobs, businesses and opportunities are always in survival mode with the lack of financial wealth spread. Running things on an oil rag really. The fact that Chidley has done this for 5 years is due to his club experience. Most people would end up moving on after 3 years.

Make no bones about it. The next person to takeover has to very time-devoted to the cause.

Hi All White Believer
Many thanks for the support. Yes it has been hard and yes when you see the money going into franchises around the NZFC. I think we do OK.Too me the main things that holds OU back are :
A crap Fed league. This results in good players not having to perform. It also means that clubs dont have to perform. Players think they are better than they are.
I know that our entry fee alone is more than 6 out of the 10 Fed league teams earn a year. Yes i was the GM and what happens is done thru myself.
I have recieved heaps of crap on this forum and maybe a lot of it was justified. However lets look at a few FACTS:
1) I was given a budget by OU to achieve. I did this every year. Fact
2) I had no say were the monies went. Fact
3) I lost a lot of good friends because of OU. Fact
4) I believe that the franchise system is the onle way. OU and our area could not compete. Clubs could not sustain the amounts needed, year in year out.
5) How can we generate support when we were either botom or second bottom. We didnt even know were we were playing until September.
6) Malcolm was brought into the senior role mainly because of contractual reasons. What he has done so far is superb. Waitakere this weekend. Back OU.
'7) Have a look at the number of posts on this forum. We are the number 1 posting site. Lets turn that into bums on seats and help them out.
8) We may not be the best solution but we are our only solution at the moment. Please supprt them.
Finally, i thank all you people that have supported myself and OU for the past 5 years and please continue to support OU in the future.
Thanks Chids

Sorry Chids once again you are taking the easy way out.Clubs are the only way but we,ve got to re design the clubs, extend them ,re finance them, and empower them to extend themselves and make them hubs in the community. Its not easy but your way weakens and contracts the game

Chids, thanks for all you've done for Otago U over the past 5 years. Yeah sure its been tedious watching them at times but on thier day this Otago team is as good as any other team in this league as proven by the result vs Auckland. Agree completly re clubs vs franchises, the clubs in Dunedin are very much amateur and cannot sustain the nat league. If we come together we can compete (ie Rd 1 vs Auckland, Rd 3 vs Welly). I've got my season pass and am positvely enthused about 2moros game and will be yelling as loud as anyone.

I have no doubt in mind that without your input and motivation to seeing an Otago team in the NZFC Otago would have had thier licence removed and  most young Otago players would only have FPL to aim for locally. As well as that the sooner we get an 6/8 team full travelling league for the SI, the better.

So in summary thanks Chids, what ever anyone says takes away nothing from the outstanding contribution you have made to Otago footy.

Good effort form Otago today, I thought they were unlucky not to grab a point.
Interesting comments from Malc in the match programme regarding Rhys Henderson pulling out of the squad and Robbie Deely's omission from the Wellington game, great to see some honesty for a change.

Welcome, Since our first home game against
Auckland we have had two away games
stretched over four weeks due to the O league
games and that great result by the ALL WHITES.
The All Whites game was great for NZ football but also
great to see Dunedin Techs own Andy Boyens getting some
game time(and I tried to get ANDY to come back and play
for us this year as a marque player which he was keen but
the dates didnt suit, but Andy did say that he might be able
to in the future which would be great.)
Also good to see some NZFC players
getting their chance as well and if selected our home fans
might get to see some of them on display this week for
Waitakere.
Our resullts since our fine first round home games nil
all draw with AUCKLAND have been an away loss to HAWKES BAY(1-2) and an away
win to WELLINGTON (2-0) which was very pleasing.
On to todays game I would like to welcome Neil and his men from the far
north to our town, and knowing how good Waitak sides of the past have been I know
this is not going to an easy task for us today on the field.
For those fans that were at our first home game there will be a couple of new
faces in the squad today as we have added Dan Ede (back from injury) Nathan Knox
( from Minnesota Thunder ), and also back from injury & suspension is Andy Coburn.
We have lost Rhys Henderson from the squad (wasnt happy with trainings on
a Monday after games).

Everybody in the squad has had a taste of the NZFC and have held there own
against some tough opposition which is very pleasing and makes team selection a
tough job, which is the way I would prefer it to be.
This week we will be without our regular captain Tim Horner who is away coaching
the under 15s in Singapore which is a shame but he committed to them before we
were up and running so we dont have a problem with this.
All it does is open the door for someone else to step up just as Morgan Day
did last week when he got another go last week as Robbie Deeley was left behind for
discipline reasons. Robbie is now back training pushing to regain his starting place.

As of this report we are also in talks with two or three others to be added to fill
up our roster so things are moving along good.

Before I finish my report I would like to take this change to thank Marc Chidley for his
hard work as the clubs GM for the past five years, which i know has not been easy and
I hope your new ventures all go well.
To our supporters today I hope you enjoy the game and that we play as we
have in the last few week.
Having your support means plenty to the players.

okay performance, got the short end of stick re decision making, knox out of position at left mid and then when sadd got injured coburn looked way out of his depth at cb, jsut shows how much we need horner.

Think a 3-4-3 could be best for this team with putting prattley into midfield, playing abbot of the bench and moving knox into the front three as a target man.

Wagget

Sadd
Jenkinson
Horner

Fachinie
Coburn
Kelly
Prattley

Dugdale
Knox
Ede

Brown
Abbot
Shaw
Deeley
Connor
Day
Reichwin

Still
Watson

hmmmmm thought Coburn did well when pushed backed there, Nathan Knox should be up front with Dugdale, Dan Ede to the bench, his positional play was awful, not sure if he's up to NZFC to be honest.
Think Otago deserved a draw, Waikatere were average, can't believe they didn't attack down the left more esp with it being Abbo's first game for a while & having a yellow pretty early on?

Otago Fan , dont mind the 3-4-3 formation but some of your selections need more work , I wouldnt have Sadd in the starting line up , hes just not up tp much at this level , prattley a much better defender and can attack on the break with his pace and skill. My Team would be
                             Wagget
             Horner    Jenkinson  Prattley
          Fachinie   Kelly  Coburn  Deeley
                     Dugdale Knox Ede
Bench  Shaw - Defence
            Day -  Midfield
            Still & Connor - Forwards
Brown - Keeper ( he is all we have )
The selection of Deeley and Ede are the only guys who are suspect in this line up , both wouldnt be auto selection , but at this stage there are limited players capable of starting ahead of them .

Watson still to young and Reichwien and Abbot ( Jury still out on these players )

Any thoughts ??????

wasn't sure how big the benches are allowed to be, so just shoved everyone down.

funny you say that re prattley and deeley becuase my original post before the edit had deeley there with prattley. I just don't think deeley is quite up to this level as a starter and the way prattley was pushing forward i thought midfield m ite well work for him. As well as this it enables knox to play his natural position. I'd possibly go 4-3-3 with prattley playing left back but pushing up further. My main idea was that Knox should not play wing midfield

I would just like to clear up a couple of things...

The reason i left Otago United is NOT because i didn't want to train on a monday after the games and where he came up with that only Malcom would know. When i spoke to Malcom myself on the telephone and asked why he would write something like this in a game day program his answer was..and quote " Thats what the cavvy boys told me". Not bad from the head coach of a national league franchise sounds very professional.

Question. If Robbie Deeley was left at home for descipline reason's then why on game day did Malcom (Knowing Deels wasn't going because obviously being the coach he would of told him he's not in the traveling squad) only travel with two outfield subs and a keeper meaning if there was an injury after both subs were on the would have to play with 10?? Surely not?

Thats all for nowRhys Henderson2009-12-08 14:26:02
