Not sure you could accuse him of that. Going to Mosgiel in the first place shows he was up for a challenge. As everyone on this thread keeps saying "it's only Dunedin football, no one cares"; so I think it's more a case that once the league was a forgone conclusion, back in June, he probably decided just to leave it and ensure fitness for the National league. Probably makes sense IMO.

Tom Batty has been massive for Dunedin Tech and United. Great to have a goal keeper of his pedigree down here. It's a shame he is leaving but we've appreciated the 4 years he has dedicated to Southern football. Wish him all the best back home in ChCh. Ps not sure why you'd import a keeper when you've got Batty at your doorstep.

A good keeper yes, why can't he take a goal kick?

It's not like all of sudden can't kick. The kid was always an adept kicker. Clearly an injury.

For the train spotters out there - has anyone ever completed a season having won every game?

Three Kings United won every game in the Women's Northern League this season.

The Collection went missing on Saturday? I waited and waited but you didn't turn up, twice. The only collection i saw were a collection of passes that were made to the boys in red! Correct me if i am wrong but did three of Mosgiel's four starting defenders from the first team last year turn out in the Chinese charity in the weekend and couldn't get it done? Dear oh dear.

HH. I've read through some early pages of this forum and I couldn't see anywhere that you came out and told everyone who you were? And your words weren't always kind. Lets not act like everyone else on this forum told everyone who they were after bagging them, it just wouldn't make sense. As a well respected member of Otago Football I will have to decline and sign out with a few facts.

-Caversham were the first team to win ever game is the 60 or so years the Southern league has been around.

- Didn't concede a goal at home all season - Just six times in the league-Tied for the record.

- Had four in the top 10 of the golden boot race

Gunners, Dunedins most loved club? Not a chance, On a side note it seemed like Mosgiel were missing a few on Saturday. I hear Harley was injury free in the stand (mouse) and Matt and Rahan were away. That's Mosgiels midfielders away as well as Eder gone. If they had Eder, Harley, Cody and Tom Cairns the whole season they would have gone very close. So the seconds would have been pretty depleted and without making excuses for them Caversham had to bring in the old dogs to get the job done after a couple sound defeats. Everyone is getting pretty sick of your rubbish.

Caversham for example perfect season should mean winning the cup too!

While Waitakere won the league and cup in 1995 they did lose 1 game in the regional round of the superclub (1-0 to Waikato United)

The closest to a perfect season is Eastern Suburbs in 1965 when they won the Northern League unbeaten, with 2 draws and they also won the Chatham Cup

Caversham's 18 wins from 18 games is the first time a men's team has done this in NZ (in a top level division)

If that's the case that is quite an achievement. Obviously not the most competitive league in NZ but still no easy feat.

If Southern United put as much effort into their games as you lot do arguing with each other, they'd be off to the Club World Cup this December.

Southern's problems aren't caused by a lack of effort. The lack of any sort of money and direction from the board is what ultimately hinders the team.

https://www.odt.co.nz/sport/football/18-18-not-per...

I find the tone of today's article a little depressing...  Sure, there's not a Premier coach in town who wouldn't agree  that the league isn't as strong as it has been in the past...  But I reckon it's generally overstated and at the end of the day  you can only beat what's in front of you.

I mean, the All Blacks are getting lauded for their unbeaten run with barely a mention of the quality (or lack thereof) of opposition...

Gonna be a bloody tough game this weekend against Cashmere so hopefully Cavvy go well... Pretty pathetic that the South Island championship is coming down to a single game...

No Day or Coldicott? I don't see any goals in there, that's the real problem.

Thoughts? By my count -

Cavvy 7

Tech 4

Mosgiel 4

Roslyn 5

Queenstown 4

GI, Uni, Northern 1 each

A few potentially  surprising omissions but could be unavailable etc... No Coldicott, Henderson, Rickerby , Hayman, Day, L Jackson... Although coach notes he's  not limiting home based players to this squad.

How the lad Tore from Cavy isn't in there I have no idea. Southern need a lad who can hold a ball up top as my guess is they will be under the pump a fair bit.

Tore's maybe been a little inconsistent, but you're right there doesn't seem to be many genuine centre forwards there... Northern's Richards is perhaps in that build but very questionable if he's up to the level.

Guessing (hoping)  one of the imports is going to be a forward!

Spot on!

However, based on last seasons imports, and previous years, who has actually made any real contribution to the team?

With Cosgrove in the team his long throw gives them an added edge, not too much going forward but defensively solid
