It’s not done on points exactly, it’s on positions as I understand it, and it’s weighted year on year.

From what I’ve been told, this years first place gets (let’s use this as an example as I’m not super understanding of this bit) ten points, 2nd place 9 etc… same for the past 4 years. Those annual points are then weighted by 50% for 2026, 40% for 2025 etc.

That gives an average score for 5 years, although weighted.

Andrew Voerdman had a mega excel spreadsheet on one of the threads, I’d love to hear the fella who wrote the excellent book on national league’s take on this too.

Is this right?

Aye, substantially correct Vim. NZF are not using weighted points but instead have opted for weighted league placings over the 5 seasons, 2022-2026. Weightings are 10%, 15%, 20%, 25% for seasons 2022-25 and 30% for this season. Plugging the numbers in  for 2022-2025 shows that CU have a weighting of 6.35, CashTech 6.25 and Coastal 6.00. The 2026 league will provide a margin of 0.30 between consecutive league placings. So, if CU finishes behind CashTech AND 2 places behind Coastal, they will miss 2027 qualification.

I'm assuming they're banking on the Pro League ending and then picking up some guys from their sister club SIU, but with how things are panning out so far that might be a risky gamble.

How many players will CU get back at the end of the OFC league season?

Say it quietly but Bays could be an outside shot of National League qualification this year. Up to 2nd level on points with Tech, who have a game in hand. Have ground out a couple of home wins as well as an impressive 4-1 win in Wanaka, not an easy place to go.

Next week’s match against Coastal should be a good test of where they’re at.

Voerman's one from the National League thread is based on points rather than position (unless there's a newer one somewhere I've missed).

It's a shame they're using position as (ignoring yearly weighting) Nelson's 2022 season (16 pts off 2nd) should not be worth the same as Cashmere Technical's season last year (1 pt of 2nd, 3 off top) imo.

CU could get 5+ players in from SIU  once the OFC Pro League finishes

Do Zeb and Yoo return to ACFC or stay in ChCh?

Could some little NZ comp involving SIU, Nix and Auckland (ALM pre season) happen and make it attractive for guys like Feutz to stay around Canterbury??

Say it very quietly - here 'outside shot' means that Bays would have to win the 2026 league with ALL of CU, CashTech and Coastal finishing in 8th, 9th and 10th places. Such a scenario could see Nelson and Bays in the 2027 NL

So everybody has won and everybody except Cashmere has lost!

Great for Selwyn to finally grab a SL win, it's been too long and seems like they have pushed through the next generation finally.

Cashmere to walk the league? Dunno about the rest. Assuming no relegation?

Yeah, I got sold a dummy here and I'm not too pleased. Their way of doing it is outrageous IMO.

Wanaka suffered some heavy losses towards the end of last season and haven't started the best. Going to be close around the bottom this year.

Cashmere? Oh yeah they walking the division

Ben Sippola leaving Wanaka would be a huge loss. I imagine alot of their club growth the last few years would have been built around him.

What a come back from the lads! That first goal from Nelson had me stressed but you can't count these guys out. They've had a good start to the season so far.

Next round it's Cashmere Technical vs Northern which could be a big one. Fun fact for those who don't know, Rory Herbert played for Northern Last year and is currently playing for Cashmere so that could make it interesting.

After Round 4 of the SL:
Ferrymead Bays
  • sitting on their best start

Christchurch United
  • sitting on their worst start
  • first time they have failed to score twice in the same season

Yes, any players linking up with any club in the National League / Regional League unlikely to play until late June which in the case of the Southern League will be Round 11 or Round 12

Let's throw a few predictions around why not?
Cashmere too good for Northern, hope I'm wrong but think it might be reality check, 4-0 to Tech, but Northern are still a good team.
Think Royals against Nomads could be a shootout - Nomads recent form better, but they tend to struggle in this away game. 3-3.
A bit worried for Wanaka away to Chch United - they can swing massively against the top teams, despite poor United form I'll say 5-0.
Selwyn for an unlikely draw in Nelson, these guys can defend this year and Nelson been wasteful some games, 1-1.
Coastal against Ferrymead the toughest to pick... think it could be 1-0 either way, reckon 1-0 Coastal and they're back in the top two.

Tom Schwarz what a strike from his own half! Spotted the keeper off the line. Nice of the commentary to mention a few mins later that Schwarz' wife missed the goal 😂😂 edit at least she saw the second one.

Northern have otherwise been competitive and held their own, this Cashmere team just scores at will tbh.

Yes, Northern will be disapponted that they failed to score a couple of goals, could have easily opened the scoring.

Yeah that was unfortunate for Northern. SPL team lost as well which damped things slightly at the club room but what can you do? the result against Cashmere was worse than anticipated but not hugely unexpected. Cashmere will definitely be running away with the title this year unless, they're hit with a catastrophic injury Crisis.
