With a third of the season* gone a few 'take outs' (18 game season*)
  • Northern now sitting on 10 points from just 6 games which means that they have more points than FC Twenty 11 - 7pts, secured from 36 SL games and Mosgiel - 9pts, from 18 SL games. No team has been relegated that have reached double digits
  • Cashmere Technical now match their best start to the season with 18 points, but goals wise best yet with 35 For - 2 Against - compared to 29 - 3
  • Ferrymead Bays continue on with their best start to a season with 15 points, previous best - 10
  • Christchurch United now with their worst start to a season with 8 points, previous worst - 15 - for the first time ever United have not featured in the 'top 3' on the table so far this season
  • Nelson Suburbs now with their worst start to a season with 6 points, previous worst - 7
  • Dunedin City Royals now with their worst start to a season with 5 points, previous worst - 7
  • 15 Clean sheets - Technical leading the way on 4, Bays 3, Northern 2, United, Coastal, Royals, Suburbs, Nomads and Selwyn all on 1, Wanaka 0
  • Games scored - Technical and Coastal 6, Bays and Selwyn 5, United, Suburbs Nomads, Northern and Wanaka 5, Royals 3

You forgot to mention that Selwyn has already gathered more points than last season. 4 points currently and only 3 last season. They also have more wins, 1 win so far and none last year.

I was talking about this with my mates on the drive back to Dunners but it sorta feels like Selwyn didn't necessarily improve, more so the competition got worse. That said for Selwyn supporters it probably makes little difference.

A major milestone stat I somehow missed was Cashmere Technical becoming the 1st club to notch up 300 goals since the Southern League commenced with an eighteen-game season in 2022. Their 300th was achieved in the 2nd round of the season against Nomads when Garbhan Coughlan scored the opening goal for Tech, with Tech's tally now 329- from 78 game, averaging 4.22 goals per game

Christchurch United currently on 285 goals so closing in to be the next to join the '300' club.

Who will be the next to join the '200' club, with Nelson Suburbs (77 games) currently on 194 and Coastal Spirit (78 games) on 192.

Selwyn joined the '100' club in the opening round when Blake Lang scored against Technical.

Points wise, Technical five points away from the first club to reach 200 points, United currently on 187. Nomads just a point away from reaching triple figures.

Ferrymead vs Selwyn ends mostly how you expect but Wanaka vs Royals is quite surprising. A few of Wanaka's better players went to Royals but both have been poor this season. Heard Wanaka missed a penalty?

Several club records in the Southern League after this round.

First time Cashmere Technical have won 7 games on the bounce at the start of the season.
First time Nomads have won four games on the bounce - first win in Nelson to maintain their unbeaten run at Saxton Fields.

Dunedin Derby this weekend! North vs South!

Personally I'm tipping Northern to win this one, partly because I play social for them but mainly because I think the squad is genuinely just better (Which is represented on the table so far)

Northern have struggled with goal scoring since Rory Herbert left for Cashmere but it's also been pretty tragic for the Royals.

Give me a 3-1 win for Northern

Edit: Correction it's next weekend, got too excited there

In previous six Dunedin derby games, (in the ten team SL - 18 games) the Royals are unbeaten, three wins and a draw against Green Island and two wins against Mosgiel. Back in 2021 when it was an eight team - 7 games SL and playing under the name of South City Royals they defeated Green Island but lost to Otago University 2 - 1, with Aiden Barbour-Ryan (now at Cashmere Technical) scoring the winner in the 88th minute.

Re Dunedin Derby excitement

Been waiting for this since the season started! The guys at Northern actually talked to City about moving the game to a 5pm timeslot to allow as many people to turn up as possible but City said no which is a bummer. Either way this is gonna be the biggest game in Dunedin! (so far)

So uh, little update. Northern is now being watched for "Anti-Social behaviour". Southern Football is sending a representitive to keep an eye on us at the derby and the referee is being instructed to halt the game in case of innapropriate chants and is permitted to call off the game if bad behaviour persists.

Now obviously I'm pretty biased here since I play for Northern but I feel like we haven't been bad enough to warrant such scrutiny. I wouldn't say we've been saints but we've done a decent job at keeping each other in line, immediately shutting down anything that crossed a line and what not. If people from other clubs want to chip in with their own perspective feel free but I really don't think we've been so bad we need to be kept under a microscope.

Idk, I find it somewhat frustrating since we've been self-regulating and going above and beyond with the Christchurch trip for example (I feel tired just thinking of that road trip). Not gonna stop us from having a fun derby though, even if we have to hold back.

Again if others think Northern have been out of control let me know, I might be unable to see it since I'm with the club.
I know you haven't been in Dunedin long, but this has happened a few times over the years so they're probably just trying to be proactive here. People crossing a line too far and can result in things getting a bit nasty. I can recall being at a Royals-Northern game on the turf in the SPL and reminding the Northern lads a few to step back from the pitch, they were almost on it!

On the flipside I've mostly found the banter from Northern to be funny or at worst within limits, but all it takes is one individual to cross the line and a couple others to follow them. I guess they're just trying to be wary of that and for nothing to happen that might be a bad look for the clubs/federation/league.

Hopefully it's not taken poorly because 99% of what Northern are bringing to this comp is good. Probably that representative will have nothing to do!

Fraser Angus has transferred to Coastal Spirit from Cashmere Technical. Fraser had made two appearances in the SL this season, both coming off the bench, scoring once against Nomads.

You gotta feel for Ferrymead because they're genuinely having a great season. Unbeaten against every other team, 6-points clear of 3rd place etc. It just so happens however that this strong season is overrlapping with Cashmere having the most dominent run in this national league era
