I'm no Auckland City fan (TW fan living in Auckland) but have immense respect for what they do.

I have noticed that the Anti Phoenix chants have disappeared in the last 2 years at Kiwitea Street  , and I think a couple of the ringleaders have either grown up or been absent. I do know of people who will not go to Kiwitea because of those chants in the past.

From what I saw at the game the AC fans took their loss well  and acknowledged both teams.

Big ups to the TW fans that came up from Auckland. Saw Dale having hassles with security bringing his flag in . Bucket Man didn't seem to have the same problem with his regalia.

Seeing the highlights the crowd looked a lot smaller than I felt it to be - was 1100 from memory which is a bit disappointing.

NZF told us our flag was approved for entry only to find out it wasn't when we got to the ground.

Agreed it was the 'ideal final' if there is one, Wellington vs Auckland battling out for football supremacy in our NZ league. Considering the attendance for the U20 World Cup opener between NZ and Ukraine got 25,000, (with ticket prices being nearly double)I would agree 1100 is disappointing. (although up by 300 from the previous year IIRC)

Hopefully Mr Handa has the funds to have more readily avaliable footage of the games in future to build more public interest and exposure.

I don't think 1,100 at the final was a disappointing crowd at all - I think that's just an indication of how much growth our league still requires. Would have been about half that number if the game was hosted in Wellington.

The old franchise v club thing rears its head here, doesn't it?

Lots of people love football in NZ, but they've got a club of their own for the Winter - which will be taking their attention, volunteer hours etc at this stage of the NZFC. City's semi-final against Hawkes Bay was poorly attended, because a lot of regulars had the opening NRFL game that Saturday.

Tasman has generated a decent support through some smart moves regarding the local backpackers and being sponsored by a pub, HBU have done something similar. Hamilton Wanderers got decent attendance from their club base, but for all Suburbs talked about being a massive club - their attendances were pretty average.

Having club sides means you've got a core base, but that isn't going to extend out to other rival clubs in the same geographic area suddenly putting aside the winter rivalry for a summer get together. In that way franchises make sense, but thirteen years in a lot of clubs struggle to pull numbers in and while NZF aims to 'raise attendances', they've produced absolutely no suggestions how to actually do that. Clubs aren't going to spend too much $ on promotional stuff when there's other things, like the squad, to spend money on.

Something's got to change, someone's got to try and find a way to reach out.

I think it was very disappointing - considering the Chatham Cup final got about 5 times as many.

Big occasion, heavily promoted by clubs (buses, activity days) and hyped via the magic of a cup run - with two weeks notice to arrange travel involving two clubs within driving distance of North harbour.

vs

The same final for NZFC and OFC the last few years, a weeks notice with one team having to travel up from Wellington.

I forgot to have a moan at the time - honestly what idiot came up with that decision...? That may sound harsh but it really is was a mental decision that I recall them making last year. Who do they think their audience is? Even if Sky is dictating the time, who do they think their audience is?

well for starters, I'd expect this final to have half as many people as the Cup did, because supporters of one of the clubs couldn't just drive over to NHS for the game.

I think it is quite a contrast with the 4,500 at the Chatham Cup final

NZF set the date and time of the semifinals/final when the draw came out in September.

If this is anyones fault, this is the federations fault for scheduling in direct competition with the dates of the finals. But personally  I don't think it's anyones fault, an unfortunate byproduct of extending the league out by 4 rounds.

Exactly. There's no excuse for the crowd at the final to be less than a Tasman United home game. Downright embarrassing for ACFC, to go along with their performance. There needs to be far more fan engagement, from the clubs themselves as well as NZF. I doubt many casual fans knew there was even a final on, let alone the scheduling taking out people who would otherwise attend.

I wonder if more would have turned up if the final were at Kiwitea street (could it hold more?).

At the very least having the game at kiwitea street would have been a much better atmosphere, looked better on TV, and would have looked (maybe even actually been) more full.

3 x banks seats with 6 rows (at stadium seat spacing's) approx 1000 seated

150 standing behind seating.  30 on grassy knoll. 50 in front of kiosk. another 50 behind fence/north goal Approx 250 on east side line.

Would be my guess. Plus invited guests on balcony and in club rooms  Conservative 1800 + teams/support crew, security.

And 100 queuing at #BBQ for top notch Harrington's.
