Quote  terminator x "It's clear that Oceania have already made the decision to invite the Phoenix into next year's O-League (the only problem this year being timing and fairness, which seems reasonable) making most of this debate a waste of time!"

Ain't that the truth.
And who's our rep in Oceania?  Non other than ' have it my way or no way' RD, NZ's answer to Silvio Berlusconi.
Grey and Miserable personified.

See, here I am being civil, merely playing devils advocate as I have made it clear that I don't support the idea of the Phoenix playing in Oceania, but you still have to come across as a blinkered git...

Congrats Phil, those who refer to you as Grey and Miserable do seem to have you pegged.

Thats cause he spends all his time at the Dogs Bollix....

Have'nt been to Dogs Bollix in months!!!

Just an observation but I think if anyone "owns" anybody here, Yellow Fever owns the ACFC branch of the Flat Earth Society.

After all, you do seem to spend a significant amount of time on this website trying to convince us of such gems as "you're all Aussies", "Cardiff is actually in England" and "Sepp Blatter is a reasonable man who will listen to our pleas for mercy".

Personally, I've never looked at the ACFC website or message board (if such a thing exists) because frankly, I couldn't give a sh*t!

The irony being that you can only really prove me wrong by not replying at all.

Over to you "Daddy"...

I thought the whole point of your argument is that the Phoenix are an Australian side, so hardly your 'opposition'... unless you are now saying we'll meet in the O-League.

Little bit of credit where it is due Terminator.

ACFC have "put the points on the board" so to speak - whereas the Phoenix are only one season old and do not have any football silverware to speak of...yet. Maybe 2008/09 is the year?

ACFC conversely were formed in 2004 and have attained the following:

NZFC Title 3 times consecutively in 04/05, 05/06 & 06/07;
Oceania Club Championships 2006;
OFC Rep at FIFA Club World Cup 2006;
National Youth League Champions 2007;
& were also voted Auckland Sports Team of the Year for 2006;

If the club wins the NZFC title again this year they will be the only club in history to have achieved 4 consecutive titles since the national league commenced in 1970.

Individually...

Two of their players Greg Uhlmann and Ross Nicholson are currently equal with 6 other players, including legends Steve Sumner and Ronnie Armstrong, as the all-time leaders of national league titles won, with 5 to their name.

Grant Young was the NZFC Golden Boot in 2004/05 and NZFC Player of the Year in 2004/05 & 2005/06, Keryn Jordan NZFC Golden Boot in 2005/06 and Ben Sigmund NZFC Player of the Year in 2006/07.

NZ football legend and ACFC Property Steward, Arthur Egan, was made a Life Member of NZF for his services to football in this country in 2007 also.

Certainly team, club and individual achievements to be proud of by anyone's reckoning don't you agree Terminator?

Can't really knock Billy Aucks for getting a little over-excited about his club when they have produced a record like that in 3 and a bit seasons can ya???

Of course you are opposition!
Every time your lot drag our game down, its then up to the teams of NZ to try and get it back up again!
In reality, your everyones opposition in this country

Well done Billy.  The Phoenix average 12k for the season and drag the sport down.  Generate more positive press than the game has had in five years and a million other things, yet somehow they drag the game down.  30,000 for the Beckham game, dragged the game down ?  Even though the club finished last pretty much all the press were unanimous the season was a success, but the Phoenix drag the game down ?

Excellent logic.  Name one way in which the Phoenix have dragged the game down ?

You are aware that the total number of people in this country who think that amount to about ten ?  Even most of the Auckland fan base support the Phoenix.  There are more Aucklanders on here backing the Phoenix than against it, last time I was at McLeod Road there were Auckland fans in the stands wearing Phoenix gear, but we're the mortal enemy ?

Steady on guys.

What I was trying to point out before (in a roundabout way I admit) was that we should be nicer to the members of the ACFC Flat Earth Society who put up a front of hating the Phoenix but are on here so often that they are clearly in denial and have actually got a great big hard-on for Yellow Fever (yes happyted, Billy and Uli, I'm talking about you).

It must be really hard living with such internal conflict. Think about it as if you had a friend who you know is gay but just hasn't come out of the closet yet. For the members of the ACFC Flat Earth Society this is their guilty pleasure.

as per HN comments ...

OK kids, there are legitimate arguments for and against the Phoenix competing in the O-League and/or representing Oceania. I think that is where this thread started. Hard to remember now. But this discussion has degenerated horribly.

I don't personally mind if the Auckland die-hards want to boost our web traffic statistics by bashing the Phoenix and making ludicrous statements about the Phoenix "dragging the game down" - but let's make sure we don't dignify that kind of rant by retaliating in kind or with personal rubbish. Let them rot in their own frustration and self pity.

We will have to close the thread down if the garbage continues.

I do agree.

From now on if someone from ACFC says something negative about the Phoenix and/or YF just remember that their football orientation is a bit confused right now and they are still "in the closet".

It may help you to understand them if you read a copy of the ACFC Flat Earth Society manifesto which you can view here:
http://www.alaska.net/~clund/e_djublonskopf/Flatearthsociety.htm

Now I'm off to watch "Lost", the plot of which makes far more sense than most of this debate.

Great record that of ACFC...cerainly one of the finest of any sports team in NZ over the past few years without question...here's hoping the Phoenix can claim some A-League silverware soon and challenge ACFC as NZ's most successful current football club.

A franchise is a club - it is simply created within a particular regulatory environment that means it will have certain characteristics that other "clubs" may not. That doesn't make a franchise any more or less valid as a club than any other, and there is no single definition of what a club is.

In fact, over the course of history I'm sure there are many different examples of how football clubs have come into existence according to the particular circumstances prevailing at the time. For example, Barcelona is probably the world's best example of a mutual association - owned by many thousands of individual members. By contrast, PSV Eindhoven were started as a works team - for the benefit of the employees of Phillips. But neither of these club structures is typical in say, the UK.

Most professional clubs around the world have far more in common with our franchise clubs (the Phoenix and the NZFC clubs) than they do with what we more commonly refer to as a "club".

And for once I agree with you. ACFC have been very successful and the Phoenix will do well to emulate that.

Unfortunately for you, the first piece of silverware that the Phoenix are likely to win is next year's O-League. But maybe we shouldn't get into that!

First piece of silverware????
The A-League is over before the O-League Finals commence Terminator...surely you haven't put the white flag up before the season has even started????
What about winning the A-League first?
I dont think ACFC have ever begun a season expecting anything other than the championship...
