Was good to put up a fight against one of the big teams and not get thrashed and most of us would have probably taken 2-2 before the game. Such a shame to have got so close and not held on though. What a goal from Sanchez. Zonal marking costs us yet again. It has to be better to stay with the man than mark space surely.

Welbeck was about as expected. Ran a lot and was strong and linked up with the midfield well. But as has been his main criticism since he signed, poor finishing and lack of composure in front of goal. A top quality composed striker is passing that gift of a chance into the far corner. He goes for a fancy flick and misses it. Sad thing is probably none of our strikers score that. Giroud probably tries something similar with the outside of his left foot and Sanogo puts it straight at the keeper.

ok with a draw

Annoyed with Monreal for the first goal

Linesman great call to deny Nasri, would of sucked if he got the winner.

Dammit does anyone know a way around the arsenal player "content not available in your location" situation? Why are we getting that now?

I can only assume it is related to either PLP or Sky.

Suspect it could be because Sky owns the rights to Arsenal TV in NZ

That's what I thought but it was available last season, so they must've only caught on this season...

Yeah I used Hola during the World Cup cause it took Sky 6 days to connect me, so watched via English sites. Is excellent.

Arsenal TV seems to be available after 24 hours this season here. May be to do with Sky having the rights although it was available immediately last season.

So far this season it just doesn't feel like Wenger really has a proper vision for this team. Seems like he buys whoever he thinks represents good value and tries to fit them all into the team. Leads to this ridiculous situation where we have more talented attacking midfielders than any other team in Europe but every other position is basically thread bare. Now that Chambers is going to be starting at RB for a while we have no CB cover. An injury to Koscielny or Mertesacker this week and we're absolutely fucked. Can Jenkinson be recalled?

On a similar note - has there been any further news about Debuchy?

I am hoping Isaac Hayden gets a run out next week in Capital One Cup - he has been getting high praises recently playing in and captaining the reserves. Excited aboutt hat actually. Game finished 2-0 win over Villa with an Akpom brace. Zelalem had a good game from what I have read too.

Damian Martinez - had almost nothing to do. Caught crosses well, no saves of note as Villa couldn't get their efforts on target.

Hector Bellerin - composed, didn't allow much down his flank. Made one run of note forwards where he flicked a Diaby pass over his opposing fullbacks head and then over-ran the ball in the box. Offered up a couple of nice one-twos with Maitland-Niles.

Stefan O'Connor - it was like watching Alex Song in defence. Not only for his shaven-sided afro, but also a very relaxed style on the ball and moving across the pitch. Played quite well I thought.

Isaac Hayden - commentator's MOTM and Ugo Ehiogu raved about him post game; "calm, composed and aggressive in everything he did". Looked very able to me too, decent on the ball and also has ambition to maraud forwards. Made one good run down the right which culminated in a quality floated cross that Maitland-Niles put wide.

Brandon Ormonde-Ottewill - nothing to report in the opening half but started to get forwards more after the break, taking advantage of the space Villa afforded down their right. Made one chance for Akpom which he sliced high and wide.

Francis Coquelin - made a couple of decent interception as you'd expect, patrolling the deeper midfield.

Abou Diaby - looked the overage presence as you'd expect. Made one chance for Akpom with a decisive through ball and spread the ball well. Not the dynamism of old, actually I thought he coasted through the game, perhaps with one eye on saturday's squad, but played well regardless.

Gedion Zelalem - quietly effective. Nothing flash, moving into positions across the right-centre of the pitch, recycling the ball on quickly. Up until the 85th minute where he dissected the Villa defence for Akpom to score his second, excellent pass.

Ainsley Maitland-Niles - the quietest of the Arsenal attackers. Didn't do anything wrong, just didn't stand out. Nearly cost us a goal at 0-1 appealing for a ball which he thought went out of play, whilst the Villa opponent played to the whistle and created a chance which should have been taken.

Dan Crowley - a blind man could see this kid has Premier League technique. Very reminiscent of Tomas Rosicky with his body swerves, low centre of gravity and bursts of acceleration to bypass opponents. Moved into a lot of good areas across the left-centre side of the pitch. Had a bit of the Wilshere's about him, trying a bit too hard in the final third and not being decisive enough, but looks one to watch.

Chuba Akpom - two goals, unlucky with another where he tried to go round the Villa keeper  after a fine Diaby pass and the trailing leg caught the ball. Skied one half-chance created by Ormonde-Ottewill, had another cleared off the line.

Earned the opening goal by robbing a Villa defender and rounding the keeper. Remember Henry 4th goal vs Leeds? That was akin to the second, latching onto Zelalem's pass and bursting away from the defender before being knocked off balance and still toe-poking a great finish in off the post.

He played well, both commentator and Ehiogu praising him highly. Worked very hard and he is highly mobile. Personally, I can see why he is not yet in first team contention as he is incredibly single minded and lacks the vision / desire to pass in advanced situations. I daresay that doesn't sit comfortably with Wenger and his philosophy of technically able, creative hybrid forwards. That said, another one to watch.

No news on Debuchy yet other than Wenger saying post-match that it looked like a "bad sprain." Hopefully not serious enough to need a reconstruction.

With Arteta fit we now have Flamini (and Coquelin) available to fill in at fullback.

Flamini in particular is very accomplished there.

I don't see him backing up for Dortmund on ll accounts, so I'm guessing we'll see Chambers jump in, or Gibbs/Monreal to play both full back roles.

Interesting to see what he does up front who he rests. A goalless draw away would be the minimum required, ideally a win.

FFS Monreal out of dortmund now.

Gibbs is back but crikey, this is indeed alarming.

Permalink Permalink

Wenger said post City match that Debuchy was out against Dortmund regardless - was it suspension? So Chambers was always playing that game anyway. But yes Paul, certainly isn't a good situation. It was only two weeks since this message board was crawling with concern about the defensive transfers, and only two weeks to see that we're a bit light. We all know we have Flamini, Bellerin etc to come in if needs be, but away to chelsea in 10 days or so, it's not what anyone wanted.

Still, for the sake of balance and to not be considered too angsty, we've just played our best game of the season and things are looking good. Let's just hope the gods of injury go easy on us.

Also Chambers has a 'slight issue' but should be okay to play.

I hope Gibbs is ready and isn't being rushed back either!

Live on ESPN2. I'll be watching at home but not sure about in town (assuming that's where you want somewhere). Liverpool live on ESPN. Four Kings might be the best bet to have both ESPN channels going.

Ah, The Pub. They're opening at 6.30am ish, and will be showing the Arsenal game. I'm going there with one other, if any others are keen.

Edit: Misinformation. They're showing Liverpool play some team.

Don't get it, why are ESPN showing Liverpool vs Ludgorets instead of Arsenal vs Dortmund? Seems weird to me.

So all those Ludogorets fans in NZ get to watch their team play obviously.

Three for me, and two for them.

I saw on Sky sports news today that apparently Bellerin beat Theo Walcotts club record for the 40 metre sprint. The kid must have some pace.

Maybe for a mid table team. He has also expressed his desire to play for Manchester United, so maybe worth a shot.

I thought (obviously incorrectly) that you were one of the more sensible Woolwich supporters. He has never expressed his desire to play for Utd. As for mid table. We will see. You guys just can't help yourselves.

My question was actually serious. Can he play? I have been in sides that have had very quick players, but they were not good footballers.

Well my apologies for not taking it seriously, it seemed like a bit of a piss take. They're decent players, yes, as far as academy players go. Bellerin was pretty good pre-season, and we might just be seeing more of him soon.

He has said he wants to play for united. Tounge in cheek I am sure, but alas.

Link.
