One goal up at half time!

Hah!  Best with the second.

Andy who?

There's 3 points for the doubters.   Look at the table now!  Stoke could slip past if they use their game in hand to roll Overpaid Crybabies Arsenal at Emirates, but I reckon the Potters are too conservative to play for anything but a draw.  7th - which should be good enough for the Europa League - is just two points away.  Beating Bolton and a favour from Everton would have Newcastle trying out that spot on Sunday!

Winning our way to Europa!

It's an old article, but perhaps we'll get the new Andy Carroll for next season?  He'll have the rest of this season in the Championship to toughen up...

Remaining games for the season:

Feb 26    Bolton Wanderers (hm)

Mar 5      Everton (hm)

Mar 19    Stoke City (away)

Apr 2      Wolverhampton Wanderers  (hm)

Apr 9      Aston Villa (away)

Apr 16    Manchester United  (hm)

Apr 23    Blackpool (away)

Apr 30    Perennial strugglers Liverpool (away)

May 7     Birmingham  (hm)

May 14   Europa League side Chelsea (away)

May 22   West Bromwich Albion (hm)

I think we should be OK and a tilt at 7th is possible (but tenuous)

My picks are in bold - a total of 23 points.  Maybe a bit pessimistic, but I don't want to be accused of spreading false hopes.  Let's compare this with Sunderland's remaining games:

At Everton D
At Overpaid Crybabies Arsenal L
Perennial strugglers Liverpool L
At Man City L
WBA W
At Birmingham D
Wigan W
Fulham W
At Bolton D
Wolves W
At West Ham W

= 18 points - a nice haul for another 25 million pounds of debt

Or Bolton:

At Newcastle L
Aston Villa W
At Man United L
At Birmingham L
West Ham W
At Fulham D
Overpaid Crybabies Arsenal L
At Blackburn D
Sunderland D
At Blackpool W
Man City L

= 12 points

Actually, Perennial strugglers Liverpool have a pretty tough schedule coming through - 6th isn't out of reach lads!

Thanks for the apology, mate.  Glad to see that you're not too proud to admit when you're wrong.

The irony of the midget to the Jets!  No hope of that happening with the Nix - in enough trouble with ACC already.

Question: Is Pardew doing a good job?  On balance I think so, but how long can the Toon keep up this form without too much cover in the squad?

Pardew seems alright.  He managed to get the squad back on the job after Carroll's departure.

With players coming back from injury, our squad situation should actually improve.

Should.

Yep - all makes sense.

I think we should be OK for the rest of this season too.

More thinking about next season - doubtless not a lot of pounds to be spent on the transfer market and players being paid in umbro mouthguards.

(this has an all too familiar and close to home feel)

Wonder if the alleged owner will put the club up for sale again?

Depending on the team's ambitions, we can probably do without new signings.  (Our youth setup will provide a Europa League squad in years to come.)  But as Enrique will leave if we don't strengthen the squad, the Carroll money has to go into some good young-ish players.

ManU have only won 3 from their 12 away fixtures so far this season, a point at the minimum!
Should be able to win at bloomfield road, the tangerines' home form is atrocious!
Anfield pppppffffffttt that aint no fortress anymore! plus you'll get to f*ck carroll up in the process!
And stamford bridge is practically harcourt park these days, 3 points in the bag :)

Probably right - but I'd rather Fergie looked after the title for us this year.

I saw the one about Insomnia earlier (some other site - can't remember).

Can't see him coming back to NUFC - unless of course Pardew is a complete "Leyton" or Cashley says so (already know what lunacy he is capable of).

I seem to recall that Charles had a major bust-up with Andy Carroll during his days at SJP in the lead-up to his blow-out with Kinnear.  So Liverpool's plans to get them back together seem like a really good idea.

M. Insomnia is definitely a gifted player, but I reckon he's best left in the past.  Aside from the fact that he'd just be using SJP as a stepping stone to a "bigger" club (not that there are any), he's unlikely to fit into a team built around grounded, hard-working men like Nolan & Barton.

Shefki Kuqi, on the other hand, seems to know what it's like to have a hard life.

In other Reds rivalry news, we're competing with Anfield for Sylvain Marveaux.

Who hasn't had a bust-up with AC?

Also looks like Ben Arfa and Ameobi getting back to being fit (April and Mid March respectively).

Joey Barton never got into a fight with Andy.  (Proof: the lad's still walking.)

Tiote's signed a new contract, basically for the rest of his career!

Quite!

Bolton up in a few hours.  A win at home (with Bolton being in a bit of a mini slump) and the Mackems away at the Toffees, could see a jump of two places into 7th.

Howay Th' Toon!

From the Bolton matchpack on Eurosport, an interesting piece of trivia:

"The Magpies have won 76% of their tackles in the Premier League this term; the highest rate in the league."

Tell the lads that, "I expect a win."
about 15 years ago · edited over 13 years ago
Bolton's defending is really poor today!  No way Tiote & Nolan should have had it so easy for the opener, and now only the offside flag saves them from a red card & penalty!
about 15 years ago · edited over 13 years ago
Bah.  Bolton a bit lucky, I think.
about 15 years ago · edited over 13 years ago

Took a nap.  Feeling better now.  Top ten was the season target, and we're still not out of contention for that Europa League place.

Also, Marco leaving on a free makes selling Andy look good.
about 15 years ago · edited over 13 years ago
I already linked to it for Reds fans, but there's some more good news about young Mr. Carroll.

No, not that he's fat.

The 25% sell-on clause.

Here's hoping that Chelsea get out their checkbook again in a couple of years, once it's become clear that the old Torres isn't coming back!

7th will not be a Europa League spot.  Not sure if I'm more annoyed at Arsenal or Obafemi Martins.

....

Martins, I suppose.  Arsenal can't help being useless.

I can't comment as I am hugely conflicted!!  Other than to say I like your last statement.

Edit:  Everton @SJP this weekend.  A tough game - but need/expect a win.

Toffees will be tired after Reading in the FA Cup.  Feeling pretty well-disposed to them at the moment, so I hope they win that before losing with dignity in the weekend.
