Hooray, finally a decent performance and a win! Great to hopefully have european football again next season, although it's by no means certain - Birmingham will be scrapping for their PL lives, so no doubt we'll be typically charitable!!

Thanks to El G for his anorak observation.

The big story is Ledley coming back and us keeping a clean sheet at Anfield. I suggest we put him on ice until we play the bottom 5 sides next season.

Enjoyed the game, sounded like a terrific atmosphere at Anfield.

Have to say as much as think Suarez is a good player, he spent the entire game bitching and moaning and basically looking like a twat.

The commentators remarked he had some previous form in that area, but if he could get that out of his game he'd been great to watch (as a neutral in future games)

I was in Holland in November, and whilst visiting my cousin (MASSIVE ajax fan) we went to a local and had a few bevvies while we watched ajax vs auxerre in the champs league
Suarez was their captain, and i was asking my cousin and his mates a lot of questions about dutch football - they loved suarez but they all said they get p*ssed off with his diving, play-acting, whinging and just general cheating... and that was after having seen his handball v ghana lol

You could definitely see Suarez's bad side coming out yesterday. Seems like a bit of a fair weather player. Arsenal2011-05-16 20:43:53

Suarez is a champion. He even admits that when he gets on the pitch he is a lunatic and he just wants to win so badly. He's a twat, but he's our twat, so I'm blinded by bias. He was getting really frustrated. But his attitude is phenomenal. I love the guy already.

On the game, well, funny how you are all happy with European football and we're glad we missed out now!  But you rode your luck up front, but were defensively sound all game and weren't threatened much at all. A telling difference was the quality of your subs vs the quality of ours, but nevertheless, you probably deserved to win.

Thought the penalty was just a terrible decision all round, and given my extreme dislike of Pienaar, it was frustrating to watch. Especially as Flanno had a boss game. Also, was getting extremely pissed off at Dawson, but he did have a great game.

All in all, congratulations on doing the double over us. We'll see you next season, and we'll be better

P.S Modric is amazing to watch.

Also, looked like the only player for us who was gonna break you down for large parts of the game.

And the commentators, well, what do they know? His attitude is a large part of his game and what keeps him ticking. Just a little Uruguayan battler.

Fk the haters. El-Pistolero is boss.

5th spot is better than 6th.

Overall tho' the team had the ability to get 4th spot - possibly 3rd. The league has been so open - you lot are rueing how things might have been if Kenny had come in earlier, we are bemoaning our inability to find the back of the net.

We have 14 draws this season - that's so like the Nix. It's frustrating.

Hopefully 'Arry can keep the vast majority of the squad for next season (and start Sandro) .. and BUY A BLIMMIN' STRIKER or two.

Yeah, i would rather have got 5th spot, no doubt. But I remember a few Spurs boys saying you didn't want Europa League etc. Meh, you've fallen away really badly at the end of the season too.
almost 15 years ago · edited over 13 years ago
That's why I'd be "happy" with 5th spot.

However that still might change with the last game to go.  If we end up 6th I'll revert to the "didn't want a poxy Europa anyway" position.

From DML about Ledley:

Stats tell us that weve conceded 66 goals in the 44 games that Ledley has not been present. That equates to an average of 1.5 goals conceded per game. Compared to the six conceded in the eight games hes started, which is an average of 0.75 per game.

5th place will have to do. But look at our GD in relation to the top 4 and pyul on 6th.

Defoe will need to pull finger or go (and that goes for Pav and Crouchy too).

The next spot open to the Europa League is via the Uefa Fair Play League, and it looks like Fulham wil get that.

This means qualifying games to get into the Europa League, which according to the commentators this morning means if you play in the qualifying game and then make the final, that's 23 games in the Europa League alone - madness...

Two very good blogs on DML.  1. Levy's letter deconstructed, 2. Review of our defence this season.

"It's the fact that everyone (Levy, Harry and fans) know that deep down we could have had more this season. We've only got what we've deserved based on the results, and its a shared responsibility for chairman and manager to fix the issues at hand and for us to support the club in doing so. We're in good nick and when you do take into account how brutal modern day football and it's expectations are (Chelsea anyone?) and also our recent history with frequent managerial changes, I'm going to just suck up Harry's personality and say (if nothing interferes) he deserves next season in what most believe to be his last with us regardless.

Simply put, we need to be united (we can actually do with beating them, but you get the meaning)."

Harry makes me laugh - I'm quite happy with him, even though I do think we were very disappointing 2nd half of the season.
almost 15 years ago · edited over 13 years ago
The rumour mill is suggesting Modric is 'only' being valued at $25million. Bollox, that is not enough to scare at least half a dozen other clubs away.

I am feeling angsty.
almost 15 years ago · edited over 13 years ago
I'd be very surprised if Levy sells him for that! We paid $16.5million for a player unproven in the PL, and he's coming off the back of a great season. Plus, Levy's a hard-ar$e businessman, so would get top dollar IF we were to sell, which I doubt we will/hope we won't...

It's going to be a loooooooooooong summer of this story I feel - think it's been said before, but Luka would be top of my "don't sell for any money" list.
almost 15 years ago · edited over 13 years ago
I am getting nervous too, for each time I hear Luka or the club mention that he's happy and staying, i hear 5 or 6 newspaper reports stating he's the #1 target for Man Yoo etc.

There will be outcry like no other if he is sold though, our top player sold to a rival. I can't think of another player we have sold in similar circumstance, Berba was sulky and had lost interest, the money for Carrick was deemed to good for what was (is) a mediocre player...

He did just sign an extension to his 6 year deal, but of course that means nothing, Spurs strict wage structure (70k max a week) pales into comparison compared to what Man Yoo, Chelski, ARSEnal and Citeh play their top player(s).

I for one am delighted to see Big Martin back in the PL, he got screwed over by us and I think Fulham is a good fit for him. He'll get a great reception back at the Lane - opening day fixture couldn't happen could it?!

me like Jol too, good to see a quality manager back in the prem while ugly fat sam takes a job in the championship.

Dougie R, not sure Arsenal fits into your argument on wage structures... we've been burned plenty in the past for not being able to offer enough and having players leave eg Flamini to Milan, and Arsene has often been quoted with lines like "we must respect the wage structure'

I think we're closer to spurs' policy with wages than we are to ManU etc
