was just watching replay of the first 10 mins and noticed that, rather ironically, the foul which lead to the freekick from which we scored was awarded after a leap by fallon.  pepe pushed him.  must have been the only one fallon got all game....and we scored from it.  maybe ref figured we'd had our lot.

Don't know if anybody has commented but the AW players without a club, would they soon find themselves in one after this tourny?  Maybe other players getting offers from other clubs?

I would think they will be picked up as they won't have any or at least very little transfer fees attributable to them.
I don't think Simon Elliot has had a club for 18 odd months.

You wouldn't know it based on his two performances so far. Quite remarkable the way he has kept himself match fit and in shape at his age for this tournament.

Three for me, and two for them.

Wasn't he released by San Jose this March? That would make it three months only.

he has been my player of the tourney for the AW's so far..I think he has single handedly carried the midfield whilst receiving gobs of attention, as in Slovakian back of the shin attention.

His age will probably be the only thing against him picking up a decent contract I would think.

probably should have been 0-0 considering both goals were questionable.
everyone here in australia is so pleased with this, the italians are the most hated national team over here.

Yes I think Bertos beat his man for the first time this World Cup didn't he?

Bertos has had two men marking him every time he has got a sniff of the ball, more noticable with Slovakia - the Italians gave him room to run, and he did to good effect.

I am not sure if Paraguay will allow him to run much, but I suspect Paraguay will back their own pace rather than two defenders on the ball.

And the fact that he is playing as a right-wing-back, he has to do much more defensive work.

I agree, it seems teams had picked Bertos as a danger man and marked quite heavily.

He has been full of running, even though not getting too much ball, much like Vicelich.

At the threat of being pelted by the Lochy fun bois, I though Lochy made too many errors v Slovakia (poor pass direction, soft passes etc). BUT he seemed much improved v Italy, only one error coming to my attention, which is pretty good. Probably saw less ball also. Maybe it was nerves in the first?

Fallon sometimes gets flustered and seems to just waves his arms about at the ref sometimes, aside from well documented flailing issues in air. I think if he keeps his head down and just works hard rather than worrying about fouls, he would serve us a touch better. Hopefully not ego from the qualification goal taking effect...

That has impressed me about the majority of our side, get fouled, but jump up and keep going for the ball in case of no whistle. Elliot v Slovakia in particular (wrong thread, he was getting hacked all day, but the yellow card tackle on him was pathetic, should have been red IMHO)

Hard graft from the boys, lovin it!

As has been said, Bertos was double marked for most of the time against Slovakia through which they shut him down after the first 15 minutes or so. That *should* mean someone else can get free as the extra defender has to be drawn from somewhere. NZ didn't seem to be able to take advantage of that. Worrying the Slovakians enough to get himself double-teamed is a good job in itself. It's a fairly thankless task though, as evidenced by some of the harsh judgements and it means your hard work is to give someone else an opportunity.

Against Italy, where Bertos was mostly marked in a conventional manner, he played pretty well. Had space to take on players and beat them - not every time of course, given the calibre of opposing defender.

And of course in the AWs, Bertos shoulders a greater amount of defensive responsibility than he has to for the Nix.

All in all, I hope Leo's really enjoying his tournament. I think he deserves it for the work he's put in.

Agreed. Was the first time in a few months where Leo has been allowed to play a natural game. Good on him. Anyone bagging him is an idiot - he has been asked to play a position he still isn't comfortable in.

Hey following up on my good luck msg last week. I consider myself a Phoenix (and therefore NZ) simpatico. As I am from Canberra I dont have any other aleague team to follow and I watched pretty much all the phoenix games last year on the telly. So dont accuse me of being an aussie trying to claim in on this recent glory.

You guys must be as proud as punch bout the result against the Italians. I stayed up to watch and was cheering you on. Top effort and has a positive flow on effect for the aleague I think.

Now u understand our hatred on the Italian NT! I could just see fallon getting sent off because of their disgusting theatrics good move by RH to bring him off. I dont think ill ever understand why they use these cheating tactics? They always produce great players and when they actually decide to play football they are potential world beaters ah well.

It would have been sweet for wood to snatch the win at the end there.  A thought flashed across my mind that if NZ could pinch it then they could play out a nice slow  friendly draw with Paraguay in the next game and knock Italy out now wouldnt that have just been the icing on the cake.

To be fair to Bertos, whenever he gets the ball at this World Cup he's immediately shut down by two men. He made some good runs and got out of some tight spots this morning, to say he offers almost zero is a bit of a joke.

I loved it when Christie and Siggy came on at halftime for a kick about they were giving Cannavaro a lot of lip.  Was a lol.  What a performance from us though.  Would never have thought I would say this but I'm disappointed we didn't beat Italy.  I'm somewhat skeptical over comments our goal was offside.  I can't see contact with Reid's head, nor can I see the spin of the ball change.  If it touched a hair on Reid's head would it count as a touch, as that's probably more likely?

I'm pretty unhappy about the penalty.  Milked so very hard.  You're average corner has far more of that happening and between 4-8 players and the fact that they call it about 10% of times really gets me.

Victory vs Paraguay is going to be sweet.  2-1.

I don't know if the dive made any difference to the penalty decision - if the linesman was up with play, he'd have seen the shirt pull regardless.

It is annoying that shirt pulls are often missed. BUT defenders know it's an offence. Pulling a forward's shirt in the area is tantamount to playing Russian roulette. If a player chooses to take the risk, he can't complain when he loses the gamble.

Pulling an Italian's shirt, in the box, is playing Russian roulette with 5 bullets in the gun.

Yes,  but you have to take the context into account. Smith would have been watching loads of games while in S.A. and like me he would have seen and a lot worse going on with nothing awarded. Agreed, by the letter of the law it  is an offence. So we should expect to see roughly 10 -15 penalties per game from now on?

How about the context of Slovenia v New Zealand a couple of weeks ago? Reid learned that day that if the ref sees it, you give up the foul.

Smith knows it's a foul and he gambled on it not being seen. The odds were on his side - most shirt pulls are not seen. He cannot use the "but you didn't see it when someone else did it, so it's not fair" defence. Reminds me of being a kid at school getting caught doing something wrong and trying the "it's not just me Sir" defence.

An offence purely by "the letter of" the law? Just a simple offence no different to any other, except it's easier to hide.
Permalink Permalink

Actually, thinking also about the USA goal being disallowed against Slovenia for a shirt pull and how unpopular a decision that was one wonders whether people would prefer some way of shirt pulling being legal instead? Because I can't think of a way to make spotting it easier.

If you foul a player to let 'em know you're there then if you get caught you'll be penalized, maybe even carded, and if not then you're getting away with putting someone off their game.  But if a player dives not only can they get a major advantage like a penalty or a freekick in a good position, but their opponent can be sent off - they get two advantages out of it which, for my mind, makes it a lot worse.

Not that I condone those "just so he knows I'm here" fouls, btw.

If we are honest, it wasn't the shirt pull that got Italy the penalty, it was the fact that he went down. Yes the shirt pulling was illegal, but I very much doubt that's why the whistle blew.
