Finishes a 1-4 loss. Miller the LCB was sent off in only the 11th min.
Surman playing RCB in a back 3/5.

Timbers made subs at 37 mins, HT & 66 mins (Surman part of a double sub). By then already 0-4.

Hard to make much judgement on a game like that 80+ mins a man down.

Awesome stadium in Portland even in the wet.

But yeah a terrible start for the home team. DOGSO send off and then keeper slips and a howler of a giveaway pass, leads to Vancouver's first goal.

Surman with those trademark lunges but not many blocks in this game.

Niche Cache. Neville likes Surman. Sounds like Finn missed alot of preseason, so down on fitness. Helps his case that Portland currently down on CBs.

Surman’s performance seemed like one of the bright spots for Portland. He made a few key clearances, was assured on the ball, and looked dedicated and composed despite his inexperience at this level and the situation he found himself in. Him getting subbed was not a performance thing. It was purely because he didn’t have the conditioning to go much longer. Plus the game was gone so Neville decided to give a young bloke (who is actually one year older than Surman) a debut.

Portland had one of their other central defenders, Miguel Araujo (a Peru international) absent for personal reasons against Vancouver. Sometimes that’s footballspeak for “about to be transferred” but in this case it seems to be a green card issue. Dunno when he’ll be back into the picture. Dario Zuparic is out injured for the foreseeable future. Kamal Miller’s going to be suspended for the next game. Neville did say that the rookie Ian Smith was his best player during preseason and that he regretted not picking him to start... and he also said that Finn Surman will remain in the eleven next week. That’s the Neviller’s guarantee, folks.

Phil Neville: “Finn Surman got sixty minutes today. He’s not trained at all, he’s only played thirty minutes. He was really blowing when he came off but he’ll start next week because he’s someone that we have a lot of faith and trust in.”

Another start for Surman as Portland vs Austin has just started.

Hopefully he can nail down the starting XI spot for the next 18 months. Will put real pressure on Boxy and Bindon. Plus he'll be "acclimated" (stupid Yank term) to the North American climate come WC time.

Match highlights. Surman not as prominent as the 4-1 loss to Vancouver, when Timbers were down to 10 men. Funny that.

This Austin game seemed a cagey affair. Finn getting his big frame up for attacking corners. Timbers scoring direct from a free lick with Austin's defenders pre occupied guarding Surman & his team mates.

Portland have a few CBs out (incl last week's red card), but Neville seems a Surman fan, so hopefully he's in for a good season Stateside.

And yeah useful for the AWs that it's likely 4 of next year's World Cup CBs - Boxall, Surman, Smith, Bindon - have all played football in the USA. 3 of them in the MLS. Tuiloma in the mix as well. Pijnaker the outlier

Surman made six clearances, one tackle, and had a pass completion of 96%. He did give away three fouls but no harm was done there. This was his fourth MLS appearance and the first time he’s won or kept a clean sheet. There are three unavailable CBs in this squad right now so he’ll have to impress to hang onto this starting spot... but so far so good.

Watched match highlights just now. Timbers keeper saves 2 pens in the first 15 mins. Two mistakes by 2 different Portland defenders (not Surman). 2nd pen was a soft one.

But then the same GK fails badly to stop a shot at his near post, and Nashville lead 1-0. Surman partly at fault for the 2nd goal, but the scorer wasn't really his man to mark.

Apparently Nashville's first MLS win in quite a while.

Finn a full game in a 1-1 draw. Actually Soccerway now shows the formation as a back 4.

The other starting CB, Kamal Miller got subbed off at 74 mins, and replaced by fellow Canadian Zach McGraw (both age 27, both experienced MLS defenders). That must be good signs for Surman, as he gets to grips with the MLS.

Portland play again March 23rd. Hopefully FS keeps his starter's spot, meaning missing the AWs this month was worth it.

Surman a bit of credit for the Timbers goal, his big frame being a distracting nuisance in the pen box, 2nd phase from a corner. McGraw at fault for giving Ramirez too much space for Galaxy's goal late on. Looks like Surman was man marking 1.91m Spaniard Miguel Berry. And yeah Providence Park sure has atmosphere.

Via Niche Cache. Also his CB partner Miller came off injured on the weekend. Sounds like a major injury, so  all just makes sense that yes Surman stays Stateside for this window.

Great stuff. Makes the decision not to come back down under to sit on the bench and have a piss up after victory the correct one.

Seems to have the third highest rating according to flash score as well, so for what it’s worth it looks like he played ok.

Niche Cache. All good stuff

Five outta five for Finn Surman. Antony, Jimer Fory, and David Ayala are the only other Portland Timbers players to have started every match alongside Finn Surman... and happily this latest one was a huge improvement on the last few. The Timbers were away against Colorado Rapids where a combination of clinical finishing and excellent defending saw them leave with a 3-0 victory in their pockets.

There was an own goal in first half stoppages, then Antony (48’) doubled the lead right after the break. Kevin Kelsy finished things off on 75’. Exactly what the doctor ordered after only one win from four to begin things. The whole team’s performance was good but it was the mahi of a certain Finn Surman that you’re here to read about so lucky for you he was brilliant. Especially in the second half after Portland took control.

Surman blocked a couple shots, he picked off a couple dangerous crosses, and he made a whopping 19 defensive clearances. He was a brick wall at the back. Doing what he did at the Wellington Phoenix only translating it to a higher level. Dude was so good they sent him to do post-game media...

https://youtu.be/SR6QYEo8AqY

Finn Surman: “It’s what I came here to do, what I wanted to do. I want to play. Last season I had limited game time but for me that was important and I learned from that and took it in my stride. I worked hard in the offseason and knew what goals I had coming into this season and what I wanted to achieve. We’re only five games into the season now so there’s still a long, long way to go. I want to be a player that’s relied upon. I want to play with consistency and dominate from the back, that’s a role that I embrace.”

Hard to argue that skipping out on those All Whites wasn’t the best thing for him. Surman used the window to lay down possibly his best performance yet for his new club, leading to a very impressive victory, and with that he can start to feel a lot more comfortable in that starting role. Timbers coach Phil Neville seems to love him and only ever says positive stuff about him (even before he was starting games that was still the case). He’s clearly winning over the fans too because they voted him Man of the Match for the Colorado game.

Five weeks into the MLS season, only Minnesota’s Morris Duggan has made more defensive clearances than Surman (although Duggan’s teammate Michael Boxall might have gotten close if he’d played this week). Minnesota United drew 2-2 with LA Galaxy while Boxy was away

Surman at RCB as Portland lead 2-1 approaching HT.

The experienced Župarić and McGraw on the pine for Timbers have been first choice CBs in the past, so pressure on Finn to keep performing.

Just had a look at their squad. Only 4 Americans in their squad of 25 players.

None in their starting line up today and only one on their bench.

Wonder what their fans think of that, if they start losing.

Oregon is a Dems stronghold (55% v 41% last year), so they will just likely adopt the 4 Canadians in today's match day squad, as their own.

But yeah that can't be great for the development of US soccer having almost no Americans in a MLS team. In comparison there were 4 Colombians starting for Portland.

This guy just doesn’t shut up about how much he loves Finn Surman. It’s Finn Surman this, Finn Surman that. And the rest of the MLS is starting to take notice - even if the commentator for this week’s game got a bit condescending talking about him being “practically unknown in 2024” like they didn’t spend a chunky fee on him, like he isn’t a full international.
