Some very high fan praise in that Reddit thread. A few think he could be off to Europe as soon as next January.

Highlights. Portland in white.

Best defender we've had since lawrence olum
Seriously though he's unbelievable. What a find he's been. I wonder if he makes it to the world cup as a timber or if he's gone in january

Ma & Pa visiting from NZ?

From the reactions above it could just be the enamored fans!
Lots of names in those teams who could still do a job in the EPL tbh- Ream, Zaha, Westwood and Matty Longstaff in that game with Tuiloma last week. Some really decent challenges and competition for a young CB.

The guy Finn is speaking to his wearing a NZ fern cap. I suspect a Ma & Pa visit to Providence Park, and the enamored fans having some fun with that.

They should enjoy him why they can. Might be his last season in the MLS.

A very good player with a very good attitude and a very good personality. Good on him for reaping the rewards his hard work has earned him.
Proud to have attended the first 175 Consecutive "Home" Wellington Phoenix "A League" Games !!

Niche Cache & Surmanated

Not to be overshadowed, Finn Surman was at the heart of an outstanding defensive performance from the Portland Timbers who went to California and beat LAFC 1-0 on their own soil. Christhian Paredes scored the winning goal right before half-time, while Surman pocketed Denis Bouanga who is one of the league’s most dominant forwards (this may have been his last game for LAFC, with strong rumours of a move to Mexico on the cards for the Gabon international, so if he leaves he’ll be leaving with fresh memories of being Surmanated).

Not quite in the bag with games to play today
Timbers in the last qualifying spot (7 Points, +5 GD)
Galaxy, Cincinati and New York RB could overtake them, each on 4 points with a game to play and  +3, +1  and +1 GD respectively. A tie in GD would knock out Portland (who would have lower goals scored)

Portland still doing okay, but in a bit of a form slump. Just missed out on the cup quarter finals and dropped down the table a place or two.
Oh yeh you mentioned above.

Niche Cache

A few days later it was back to the domestic stuff... where Portland lost 2-0 away against FC Dallas. Curiously, it was Surman who was subbed at half-time when they switched from a back three to a back four. He’d given away at least one silly foul and was battling below his usual standards. He’s 21 years old playing 90 minutes most games so maybe we chalk that down to fatigue. This was a rare bad day from him.

Finished a 2-3 loss. Portland not going well at the moment.

Highlights
https://www.mlssoccer.com/video/match-snapshot-portland-vs-cincinnati#watch-son-heung-min-shows-quality-in-first-lafc-start

They were down 0-3 at home after only 35 mins. Surman at least partly at fault for the first goal. But they had a back 4, so Miller was either injured or replaced late on by fellow CB  Župarić because he was playing poorly.

Heard in the comms Providence Park is an artficial turf. Ball was bobbling around a bit. Rains alot in Portland I've read.

Surman looks like he has the captain's armband for the Timbers.
Massive kudos if so in his first full MLS season. Seems Portland have a few injuries.

Would mean Boxall, Tuiloma (US Open Cup) & now Finn S have all captained their MLS clubs this season.

He's not just a great defender, he has a mental edge that you don't see often. Really incredible potential as a leader and it's great to see that recognised.

I think we will eventually see him as captain for the All Whites too.
