Costa is only 23...if he has a great season or two with Victory then he could be picked up overseas.....more like Asia this time!  Time will tell if it is the right move. The reports I'd heard was that Pana wanted him and they had agreed on wages but the Ruski's wanted some $$ that Pana just could not find. Costa will probably get more $$$ at Victory

That doesn't make sense. If Alania wanted $ why have they just released him? I doubt Victory paid anything for him. I think the "Pana wanted him but couldn't afford him" part of this is probably being over-stated a bit.

The only thing I'm a bit worried about is the 3 year thing.

why? Its kinda sensible, victory could see a nice transfer fee if he gets snapped up by a european club, unlike rojas who left on a free.

Permalink Permalink

Unless he meant from Kosta's perspective. Perhaps there is a clause in the contract that would allow an overseas club to snap him up.

This. Clearly their plan!

If we think he might struggle to even get a starting spot in an A League team then aren't we really saying that he might not even be A League standard [or close to it] therefore he is at the right level for his ability.

Well he'd be a guaranteed starter somewhere in the league. He's good enough to be starting for a team in the league, but not perhaps for one that has a large number of players for some specific positions. However, I'd back him to make his case for a starting spot.

He'd start in any A-League team - in the second half of the last Greek season Kosta was playing regularly for Panathinaikos, historically one of the biggest clubs in the Greek Super League, a league which, despite Greece's financial woes, most would agree is better than the A-League.
Regarding his loan in Greece, Panathinaikos' financial problems are so bad, they're having to do everything on the cheap and so it's probably true they couldn't afford Russian club Alania's demands for loan payments for Kosta and couldn't afford to retain him with other strikers signed.
Things are so bad at Panathinaikos that last season they couldn't afford to play any night games because they couldn't afford the electricity bill and still owe money for electricity at the stadium. They were initially refused a licence to play in this season's Greek Super League but were reinstated on appeal...

All that information is granted, so why has he come back to the A League? surely he could have got a job in Europe based on the level he was playing. Maybe there was something in the agreement for him to leave Russia early, for free as long as he goes back to Oz. Any history of young players coming back and then getting a later gig at a higher level? I suppose Smeltz did after a fashion.

i like and rate kosta, but i hope he's sorted out his passing, i grew tired of him giving the ball away over and over again for various nz teams

seems to me that we were playing him out of position on the left flank.  he should line up on the right for melbourne, so hopefully this works better for him

I tend to agree. I think in an AW set up, I'd like to see him on the right, Marco on the left, Wood up top and Wee Mac in behind.

With his and Marcos ability to roam, if we can play/find players that can impersonate 2 DMs much like the Phoenix are shaping to play, then it would allow Kosta a bit more room to tempt fate knowing there is back up behind him so his 'passes' won't have as much of a danger element of change of possession.

I don't know, I found Kosta frustrating against the Island teams. I like the guy, but Marco and Wee Mac are similar players in some respects.  I don't think that formation you have mentioned is going to be strong enough on the ball and clinical enough to book us a WC berth.

I dont think it will either but I don't really see what other options we have other than a flat back 10 and counter. In some respects this team has some better players than the 2010 class but also some glaring holes. I still don't RH has a clue what our best formation is and this back 3 approach will doom us. I think Marco is closer to Kosta than Wee Mac. I think they are different footballers.

Back to Kosta I agree the island games were not his best but he does look better against higher ranked opponents. Maybe is cause they don't kick lumps out of him.

If he can finish a higher percentage of his chances, including one or two against Mexico and several in the WC we'd be very happy...

We had a young guy called Costa who played for us.  Left because he wanted to play CAM and liked the training facilities at Brisabane I think.
