Panathinaikos failed to qualify for the Champions League after they could only draw 0-0 with Malaga in the return leg in Athens this morning. This means they'll be competing in the Europa League this season.

Kosta wasn't in the squad for the game.

Okay, second New Zealander... forgot about Bright's couple of months at Panserraikos - Bright tends to drift around the leagues and stays no more than a season  at each club (often less) - let's hope he has a better time than Bright who played only six games before having his 18 month contract cancelled by mutual consent (unpaid wages or some such).

Good he's playing every league game currently - understandable he was omitted from Champions Lge qualifier with coach rotating squad due to only three days between Saturday night league game and Tuesday night Chmps Lge qaulifier.

PANA'S EUROPA LEAGUE GROUP (FIRST ROUND PLAYED 20/9/12) : TOTTENHAM, LAZIO, MARIBOR

Tottenham and Lazio have been drawn into one of the toughest groups of the Europa League.

The two teams will meet Panathinaikos and Maribor in Group J of the tournament.

"Both Tottenham and Lazio are big European clubs," Panathinaikos midfielder Pape Sow said. "The London side especially is not the best draw we could hope for. As for Maribor, I don't know them that well, but to have reached the group stage of the competition means that they are good."

First game: 20/9/12 v Maribor away

Awesome prospect for Kosta to have chance to play against Spurs (who made some big-name signings this week) and Lazio.

Kosta not in the squad for Pana's 1-0 away loss to Panthrakikos yesterday- understandable considering the amount of travelling Kosta did last week (minimum 29 hour flight to Athens with stopovers and then another flight to an away game). Leaves Panathinaikos ninth on the Greek table...

Game was notable for Greek Super League debut of another Oceania player, Marama Vahirua from Tahiti, who started up front, on loan to Panthrakikos from Nancy in French Ligue 1. He was named in Tahiti's squad for the recent round of Oceania World Cup qualifiers but had to pull out with the Tahiti coach's agreement to shift to Greece, as his loan agreement was only made two weeks ago.

Vahirua, one of the best players to ever come out of Oceania, with a fourteen year pedigree in the French top flight, may play against the All Whites in the next round of qualifiers next month.

PANATHINAIKOS AWAY TO MARIBOR IN EUROPA LEAGUE OPENING ROUND OF GROUP STAGE FRIDAY AM (NZ TIME).

Unfortunately doesn't seem to be on ESPN - but will be easy to find a live stream somewhere...

Will Kosta make the team?

Poor performance from Pana - with no Kosta in squad - saw them brushed aside 3-0 away by lowly Slovenian side Maribor.

Humiliating for a club of Pana's pedigree to be outclassed by a minnow like Maribor who had never won a game in the group stage of the Europa Lge before. This is looking like one of the poorest Panathinaikos sides in history (due to their obvious financial problems).

Details incl. video highlights and match commentary here:

 http://www.uefa.com/uefaeuropaleague/season=2013/matches/round=2000356/match=2009909/index.html

God knows how Pana will cope against Spurs and Lazio - who drew 0-0 at White Hart Lane. Attracted more publicity from the alleged 'monkey chants' from braindead Lazio supporters directed at Spurs' coloured players...

Pana's next game Tuesday am (NZ time) vs Atromitos in Athens. Surely Kosta will make the squad at least?

Definitely a minnow - by saying that I mean, one of the smallest clubs to ever play in the Champions League or Europa Lge (one season in group stage of each) and no great success in either comp. In the 1999-2000 Chmps Lge they finished bottom of their group with one win. In last season's Europa Lge, they finished bottom of their group with no wins and conceding 15 goals. Other than that, they've either lost out in the qualifiers for Euro competitions or been eliminated in the first round of the old UEFA Cup.
Slovenian league also a very minor league in Europe. Maribor's Wikipedia page though is one of the most epic for any club (screeds of interesting detail), lovingly crafted by a fan - they were mostly just a second and third div club in the former Yugoslavia before Slovenia broke away (only five seasons in the top Yugoslavia league in their history).
"During the 1996-97 season average home attendance was 5,289 spectators, which is still a record in the Slovenian League"
It's quite astounding they've recovered from the edge of bankruptcy in recent years to appear in European competition: "Due to their large debts, which at one point amounted to 4 million euros, the club could not afford to buy new players. As a consequence, the first team at the time consisted mostly of youth players mixed with a couple of foreign players brought to the club on free transfers."
Panathinaikos are a complete contrast - a large well-supported club with hundreds of thousands of fans all over the world and one of the most successful clubs in the Greek league which until recently was a fairly strong one just after the big four, the Netherlands and France. Pana have appeared in the European Cup Final, 1971 and two semis of Europe's top club comp. and have had hosts of big-name players and coaches over the years.

Kosta is either injured or already completely fallen from favour- not in the squad again and no appearances since his two in late August.

Another poor result - 1-1 draw at home with lowly Atromitos leaves Pana 13th of 16 teams...

Must make the manager's position precarious!

You don't have to lecture me about Maribor - I've seen them play, and I've also been there. The point is, it is absolutely ridiculous to call a team that has played in Europe and has played regular European football a minnow. Is the Phoenix a minnow too? Because Maribor is a better side than the Phoenix. What's a Maltese second division team then?

FFS, I hate when people who have next to no clue about the European club competitions decide that they know best. No, they are not a minnow in European competition. Every year over 200 clubs play in European club competitions. Maribor generally does better than more than half of those clubs. That in itself shows that they're no minnow at that level. Of course, if your definition of European football is Real Madrid, Barcelona, Manchester United and Chelsea playing each other ad nauseam then they are minnows. But then so is Panathinaikos and 95% of other clubs in Europe.

The Greeks are broke, not surprising they would try to get a player cheaper. We will have to see what happens in the future. I am worried he will not progress as a player without games, hopefully this works out long term for him tho.
