Smeltz was also marquee at one point iirc.

I think if you look at the marquee and overseas players they tend to be the creative midfielders and strikers. There are obviously a few exceptions to this but clubs generally spend money on these guys as they "arguably" dictate the game more than wingers, GKs and backs.

Massive generalisation but both Australia and NZ tend to produce players who are ok with the game in front of them but it's quite a different player who has the control and instinct to play with the goal behind them a lot of the time. Hence the backs and wingers tend to be locals.

Look at Roly B- he is amazing at coming at getting the ball, turning etc. There are few Aussies and Kiwis I have seen that can do this. Mooy is one of them. He is the glue at Melbourne and also now a Socceroo.

Kosta is a great winger but there is a far greater pool to choose from in this position. Hence he will never be close to being a marquee. He actually needs to develop his game further so that as his pace goes he isn't out on the scrap heap early (ie play well into his 30's).

We might be the only club that would consider throwing him big money. As a visa player, you are compared to what level players that money could get from overseas. He would be one of the better players we could sign atm as a domestic player.

Mooy is hands down the best player in the league. I don't think anyone comes close to him. Barbarouses is a different player but not as influential. He also gets to play on a team with fantastic players all around him.

I gotta be honest I stopped reading after the opening line cause if that's your position, then the rest must be dross too.

who is the best player then? I vote Mooy as well

I like tautologies because I like them.

if you were picking a team, would you pick Berisha or Mooy 1st? Berisha every time. Don't care if he is a cock, he wins games.

Not fit enough to play for NZ yet fit enough to jump off the plane in Australia and score the winner for the Victory.  Looks very suspect to me.

Supporter of the world's best football teams: Waikato..., Kingz FC, NZ Knights, The Nix, The Argyle & of course the All Whites

With a couple of days worth of extra recuperation time, and only played half the game. If there was something shady going on, would he have even traveled all the way to Oman?

Permalink Permalink

Exactly. Why would he fly all the way to Oman just to do one over on us? cmon guys.

Obvious. For Airpoints and shark food.

I don't know what the cuisine of Oman is like but I'd imagine its Persian influenced and delicious.

Wrong. You need guys like Mooy so Berisha can score. Play maker always wins over striker.

The players Berisha has played with have been really high quality imo for both Roar and Victory. Broich is the most creative player in A league history, 2nd most creative player is Finkler. Add to that some quality CM's in Milligan, Bratten, Valeri, Mckay, Nichols. And some serviceable fullbacks/wingers in Franjic, Henrique, Barba, FBK, Georgovski, e.t.c This guys has played in front of some of the best in the A league at least half a dozen who would be close to best A league team ever.

He has still done very well no doubt but Mooy last season had some very average players around him and he still managed almost a 100 shot assists which was nearly double Wee Mac. Would take Mooy any day

Bar banter but I would have Ifill and Carrusca ahead of Finkler, maybe Flores for Adelaide.

Hatrick of assists last night very impressive to go with his assist last week. Now has 6 assists in total behind only Mooy on 8. As well as 28 shot assists again behind only Mooy. Would get rid of FBK for ACL if it were up to me some talk of whichever international misses out may leave the club. Good to see he has found some form even if MV are still lacking

His best finishing for some time in the 4 nil victory over roar last night. 2 goals to him.

Even put the marginally offside goal away

4 goals and now 7 assists with a massive 34 shot assists turning more into a traditional winger which I think will help the all whites. A really good season imo would say he has been victorys best.

Sure Kosta can get a European gig on this form

Permalink Permalink

I know A League players are fit but Kosta just looks in such great shape. Getting forward at pace, his give and goes and general movement. Still has a Greek first touch but he's at the top of his game. Would take a lot to move him from MV as it has to be such a great club to play for with their supporters and living in such a cool city.

Bozanic and Berisha are the marquees you also have Fink, Delpierre and FBK looking to end his career at the club. Can't be a lot of money on offer. If New Zealand was part of Asia he would be in China for sure. Europe would be his best bet. Start with Greece as he know the language and culture and then maybe one day a big 5 league =P

Nice. Ok - Edit- replace Greek with heavy, bricklayer-esq, Lochhead-like. This is the reason he suits the A League and doesn't go so well for the AWs (ie acres of time on the ball). But as per my prior post his movement, improved vision etc more than makes up for this in the A League and would make him a good addition.

Phoenix aren't announcing player signings or re-signing until the licence is sorted. So it won't be player related.
