Now it appears Just may be going to Scotland, you would have to think Garbett is the last kiwi option for AFC, if they are seriously thinking of filling the left wing spot/attacking midfielder left by Moreno with a local player.

Getting a little concerned about this guy.

Hasn’t played a club match for months and months now.

Preseason has began in most leagues, a free agent and you would think if European clubs were seriously interested a deal would have been done by now.

I wonder if the drama that hung over him at his last club had more to it then initially met the eye and that is putting potential suitors off?

What a downgrade for him that'd be. Dutch league to one of the worst a-league clubs.
11 Jul 21:54
Heck, if nothing that enticing pops up in Europe and he wants to spend a year back in NZ, I'd so love for the Nix to go all out to beat AFC for his signature, to be willing to pay whatever it takes for a change rather than immediately admitting defeat when any other A-League club wants to compete with us for a player like they usually do. Would be a great signal of intent and really change the mood around the club
11 Jul 22:07
Would certainly give us some go forward in attacking midfield that we lacked, as well as letting us use a visa on a CB. But I doubt he ever does it, unless all of Europe is scared off by the attitude that saw him released (unlikely imo).

Valley FC til I die?

11 Jul 23:11
Jeez you're right though Nelfoos, however unrealistic it is, that would be an absolute game changer. Quality 10 that's not an import, leaving CB and centre forward for the visa spots. Would feel remarkably good about our season going forward if that happened.

I was asking for this for ages. Can’t see it’s a downgrade from not playing at all to the Nix. Look at Rufer get back in the AWs from Nix form only.

12 Jul 00:45
Yeah I've been saying all post-season if we kept our current imports we'd really need to sign at least 1 quality local player to have a strong enough 11 to compete. Ideally two would elevate the team to proper contenders.

Looking at the squad with Garbett just already looks a lot better, replace Tulimoa with Retre as it's likely we wouldn't get him as well but also just shows if we got both of them how strong this lineup looks.

LKH/Loke at LB…

Might drop Ishige a touch deeper and more centrally, and let Garbett start further left and let him drift in. But doesn’t matter. That’s competition for the starting 11 and injury cover. And we’re both dreaming…

There's no way Garbett comes to the Nix, and he shouldn't. He's too good for us, he'll find a team in Europe.

For his sake, I really hope so.

He’s already sat out 8 months? More? Would you rather he was in Austrian seconds or with the Nix?
Rogerson or him with a year without a club starting for the AWs? Should be Rogerson every time.

As a Nix fan, I'd love for him to come here for a year.

But thinking from the perspective of his career, and as an AWs fan, I think he can find something in Europe that's better than us even if it's a second division somewhere.

Say 6 more months pass and he hasn't landed anything then yea maybe it'd be smart for him to come here and re-build his career.

But I still think he's way too good for us to be honest.

If he wants to be on marquee wages, then he needs to play a marquee game every week. And not in and out.

Is he better than Stephen Taylor? Hemed? Krishna? Smeltz? Davila? Rufer? Kosta? Verstrate? May? Craig Goodwin?

You’re only as good as your last game. He looked very rusty for the All Whites.

Garbett has played less than 6 months in the Eredivisie, during which time he lost his regular starting spot, before then being iced altogether. Apart from that, he has never spent any time in a league that is better than the A-League. Zawada wasnt even the A-League top scorer and he then went and thrived in the Eredivisie. The A-League is a decent level of football and I'm sick of the self-hating Eurosnobs who think everything in Europe is immeasurably better than the A-League.

Garbett hasnt played in months and it would be totally fine for him to come back to NZ for a year, get his mojo back, and go again. Sure, if he finds a great option over there good for him but I'd rather he came back than going to somewhere like the Austrian second tier or Serbia.

And if we lose that fight to AFC, what would that do?

It'd be further evidence of their complete and utter dominance over us, but wouldn't really be moving the needle that much
12 Jul 07:24
Unfortunately the stats don’t lie.
1 goal with no assists for the 12 games he played in the Eredivisie as a winger and/or attacking midfielder are clearly not good enough.
Two years ago his manager had us all believing that no less than four EPL clubs were chasing his signature with this being reported in the English press. Time for him to step up and perform but from what I saw playing for NZ he wouldn’t standout in any A league team.

Beggars belief why would you go all out for him.. Just gotta shake your head sometimes and go WTF. Somone who hasnt played for how long and you want the club to go all out. 😲

Yeah i reckon he's a really entertaining direct player with a real knack for scoring goals. He's tall too, we are lacking height. I don't think we should try to outbid the whole world for him and try to convince him to return from overseas, but if he is struggling to find a decent destination over there and open to returning to NZ, I'd just like to see us be willing to outbid AFC for him.

Edit: and he is the best, most high profile local player we could realisitically get, and we need to add at least one local attacker, so yeah I would be willing to overlook his lack of football. Baze is too, clearly
12 Jul 10:18 · edited 12 Jul 10:30 · History
His last contract was a two year deal for a Dutch second division team, who got promoted half way through his contract.

Dome has said there is good contract money on the table with Kosta and two imports salaries. At that level the nix should be able to compete salary wise with the likes of the second division in Holland.

I don’t think money will be the problem. The question is if the Nix have asked him the question presenting a compelling case and above all if he wants to come.

As I think Mrs M once said, Garbett would kill it in the ALM.

But I doubt he currently see's either NZ club as an option. Ex Ole it's all about Europe (Pijnaker excepted), and he'll find some club there. I think his folks maybe living in France now (French mum). Little bro Norman is in Eire.

It could be Austria/Portugal 2nd tier, sort of underwheming though yes for now. Baze will keep picking him regardless, and I've no problem with that, as he's often made things happen for the AWs/Olywhites. He brings a bit of in your face mongrel/attitude, to a squad of predominantly 'nice guys'.
12 Jul 21:14
Yeah he's not coming back. And he'd be one of the top attacking mids if he did.

17 Jul 20:32
What's up with this guy?? Surely he must have a few offers?

17 Jul 20:55
Assuming he has the same agent as years ago, what is most surprising is the lack of noise. He was great at drumming up interest from premiership clubs.

He was great and seeding bullshark stories in the press, perhaps.

He’s no longer represented by New Era Global Sports. That may have something to do with the little to no noise we’ve heard about potential destinations.

New Era is quite a big agency within UK so maybe they knew something about what happened at Breda that we don’t?

But yeah massive concerns for this guy. A year ago he was scoring the winner against Ajax. Now he’s clubless with the season right around the corner heading into a WC year.

2 weeks if he finds nothing I think it’s time to come home no questions asked. I understand players wanted to be ambitious but at some point you have to drop your ego and take a step back to take a couple forward.

Come home and absolutely tear it up here Matt. This league would suit his play style to an absolute tea.

Hate to state the obvious but maybe there is a reason he seems not to be wanted by anyone.

Clubs still went after Greenwood - it would have to be incredibly bad for him to not even get interest from somewhere.
18 Jul 00:04
I know he enjoys a good party and is a little bit on the loose end (going off his socials) and I’ve seen him around at music festivals in New Zealand.

But I can’t imagine it’s anything to that severity because he keeps getting picked for the National Team and I’m sure NZF would know if it was something more than a fall out with a coach etc.

Really dont see how he can continue to get picked if he isnt playing football.

All the more reason for him to book a flight to Wellington :)
18 Jul 00:43
I said he keeps getting picked.

Since the falling out at Breda before Christmas he’s been in the All Whites squad in March and June. So it definitely can’t be anything to crazy for him to keep representing our country.

You’re right though he definitely won’t be in the next squad if this carries on.

Usually he has always had a buzz generated by his agent but this is the quietest I can remember it ever being about him.

It’s very strange. If nothing happens in the next three weeks you would have to think the A league is his best chance.

He's either going to pop up with some great deal. OR (even though I ruled it out above) he's signing for the Phoenix.

I couldn't see it a few weeks back but looking at where he is.. it may make sense..
