Might have to cough up a bit of dosh to watch Garbett. Him and Just seem likely to be in the action. Sadly can’t say that for Waine or Old. Think I’d have to buy a whole channel for Eredivisie and Thomas.
What a fudgeing worldie that was! Beautiful goal, Posh fans seem enamored with him already, and understandably after that. Looks comfortably one of Peterborough's best players too, so it looks like the ideal landing spot for him to get a lot of minutes. Looking forward to his return to the national team squad in October
And Posh get their first win of the season 2-1. Garbs the goal and a full game. Posh still bottom but promising signs.
Brief highlights in this link. After his goal he makes a nice turn near half way and threads through a beaut pass that almost leads to another goal. Then late on he's around his own box helping with the defending.
Seems like in Bali he may actually have been doing some hard arse training rather than knocking back cocktails.
Are you in nz? I would hope so with your informed and intelligent comments about nz football and other things 😀
If you have sky, then yesterday you could have watched Thomas on ESPN, as they do the Dutch league. martinb
Off and running!

Any goal footage yet?
In Japan! The time difference makes watching some of this football at 8pm or 10:30 possible.
Drop by any time. Grew up an Auck, but my parents sure didn’t and wider family are mostly outside the metropolis too…
Think there’s a decent bunch here who are in England, Aussie, South Africa or elsewhere keeping in touch with the community. Some in Scandinavia iirc and Marto always jetting everywhere.
Disney+ also has an ESPN on demand section with the Eredivisie games.
Oh wow. Think that’s not the case here, but I’ll check. I’m slowly building up a collection of DVDs in order to cancel Disney+. I think they moved the StarWars new stuff to an upgrade platform anyway. Haven’t seen Andor or Mandalorian 3, and that Bobba Fett thing got a bit messed up though it had its moments.
I can’t justify time to watch that much football. I get in trouble for some of the stuff I do watch. Got a feeling Woodsy might be getting fewer minutes this season though…
Arrgh. All this chit chat- though helpful thanks!
Was going to say great goal, but he’s not going to get so much space to himself like that again! They’ll have heard of him now.
Have spent a bit of time there over the years - Kawasaki is my local team.martinb

Lol- I did play a bit of futsal around there for a while. That kept me fit. Been a while though and not so fit these days. Did you ever see Fitzgerald at Kawasaki? They’re usually one of the better teams.
Don’t laugh but we’re Bellmare supporters. We got hooked on the atmosphere in our first year on a holiday and then they won a cup too that year. They had this huuuge keeper and a bunch of pirates, including a big slow striker with a great heart. Nice balmy summer sunsets at the stadium.
Then their coach got sacked for secc hara and the stadium sponsors changed, and they’ve flattered to deceive ever since. Couple of good runs to avoid relegation and in the first few games occasionally. And a great match day experience for families. But a fairly consistent just above relegation finish.
I’m a fair weather fan for them. I watch them on the box if they’re playing well, but it’s more fun to go and see them live. I don’t even follow the J league the way I should, but was shocked the way Machida and Duke got promoted and challenged in that season. Bit shocking too that the named Tokyo teams and both Yokohama teams are so low this season.
Tbf we’re not getting to too much these days. Not a lot of free time, but 10:30pm at home on a Saturday is a reasonable game time to get to watch a game on TV. Don’t have to go out, nothing else required at that time.
No, while I watched a few matches while he was on the books I never got to see him play for Kawasaki. While playing for his current team however I have seen him playing them.

Good to see you always back the underdog!!
It wasn’t intentional, but I guess it’s a bit of a Kiwi thing. I started supporting United when Liverpool was smashing everything and they were 4th or 5th on the table and then the 90s happened. Wasn’t supporting an underdog after that! But yeh, Bellmare are serious underperformers. Worse than the Nix.
Of course those days I had Shoot annuals and things Dad got me, the weekly highlights on TV One and when it went to Sky I didn’t watch it at all initially, just followed in the paper! I couldn’t deal with the petulance of Ronaldo/Rooney after that WC.
Have you been to a match day at home for Niigata? Coochie posted a clip of them getting interviewed by obasans for a magazine type show which was hilarious, but it looked like the stadium was in a park with a river. Looked really nice. Traveling on hold a bit at the moment, though I got to see onsen monkeys my first year here.
Are you involved with WYNRS at all? That would keep you back and forward to Japan and possibly getting to watch Fitzgerald.
Actually I remember early on, on the forum there was a fan called Keiko who posted here and called Fitzgerald ‘her lion’. Maybe even before he went to Kawasaki.
Unext has some of the dutch games in their soccer pack but sadly not all of them.
And they’re so expensive. Wowow had the euros for like ¥2,000 or a month subscription or something.
U-NEXT with their subs and then coins and points or whatever. I don’t even wanna know. They’re fairly bad. Yeh- DAZN has got some games from various leagues- Wrexham for example. They mostly have games with Japanese players in them. But then there was that time I didn’t know they’d lost the EPL and they sent out an email really hiking up monthly subs and getting you tied in for a year for only a small increase on a worse product…that was some sneaky bs.
Think that must be new on U-NEXT, cos I don’t think they had Eredivisie rights when I was checking for NAC Breda last season.

Yea it is from this season. Not all games tho. If you just get the soccer pack it is 3000 yen a month. You have prem, fa cup, la liga and some dutch games.
Calling all fans in Japan, come down and support the mighty nix in Osaka

Oh true. I might have that rolled over from last year or something. Or maybe should get rid of it all, given Forest are going to be topsy turvy and get Peterborough’s club sub, if Garbett keeps playing like this!
Peterborough Today: “Midfielder Matthew Garbett was so far ahead of anyone else on the field even the Posh matchday sponsors picked him [for Man of the Match]. There was no other possible candidate. If there had been a more widespread vote he’d have gained a Vladimir Putin level of victory, without any rigging.
The New Zealand international has only started 3 games for Posh and yet he’s already been compared to recent club star Jack Taylor and suggestions have been made that he’s one of the best in his position to ever play for the club. A terrific goal aided his cause. It’s a bit early for that of course, but there’s every chance he will become the first man to play in a World Cup Finals while on the books of Posh, providing he doesn’t get sold before then. There will be bids. It will be fascinating to see how high they are and whether or not they are accepted.”
This after only three starts. Bloody hell. The ironic thing is that the elements of his game that were so undesired by his NAC Breda coach – specifically his positional roaming, rushing all around to find overlaps and link ups rather than sticking to his scripted role – are what’s making him such a premature legend at Posh. Goes to show it’s not always the talent that’s the issue, it’s often the fit. Garbett’s first three league starts for Peterborough have all been ninety-minute efforts... the first time in his senior club career that he’s managed three full games in a row.
Early doors but hold my hand up here as I was quick to jump on this not being a great move.
Seems like it’s all working out for Garbett so far. Adored by the fans and already the best player on the team it seems.
Sure being in a relegation fight isn’t fun for anyone but let’s see if Garbett can help keep this team up because no doubt he’ll be gone next year before or after the World Cup.
He will be a 90 min player all year it seems barring any injuries or rest periods. Let’s see where Baze sees him in the October window. I suspect he starts from the bench but with struggling wingers in the All Whites he maybe just thrust into the XI straight away.
It’s a good start. The opposition won’t be sleeping on him now. He’s capable of playing at least a level up, but playing 90 as often as possible is probably better for him currently than another exhausting year fighting for his place. Really wish the Nix had put a marquee deal in front of him and pushed for him, but it’s probably the right call for him.
And yes- his competition for an AW berth is probably Stamenic, Singh, McCowatt, Just and Rogerson who have all made strong cases over the last year, and in particular the last month or so, so he needs to be productive.

This is exactly why Tim Sherwood called the Eredivisie the 'stand still league'.
I agree. I think he’s there is a 4 man battle between Garbett, Old, McCowatt and Just for 2 wing positions. Said it somewhere else but I think Just had the lead on them at this point but with attackers it’s always gonna vary.
Truly the most impressive thing about this article was finding out that Matt Garbett has already racked up 32 international caps. Hes still only 23. Goes to show for all their faults NZF has really tried to put the work into getting a senior mens team programme up and running post Covid. It wasn't long ago that 32 caps would mean you'd be a seasoned veteran, on their way out the door with one eye that real-estate career back in the Hudson era.

Libby on 35 caps is the only player under 30 with more caps than Garbs out of the 35 players to have received a call up in the past 12 months. Stamenic one behind him on 31. Genuinely shocked me to see Bindon already on 19 too.
