New signing Michael Boxall – who joined from A-League club Wellington Phoenix – made some desperate tackles and gave the Cannons a stronger presence in defence.

He set the standard in the last ten minutes when his determination to find an equaliser saw him surge forward on several occasions and ultimately tee up Diaco’s goal with a clever square ball.

Theodoropoulos singled out Boxall for praise after the match, but said his side owed the result to Italiano’s stunning saves.

Oakleigh Phoenix up 3-0 at HT, in their game tonight. Boxall & Smith starting, Italiano benched. No Totori.

Gee long time no chatter about Boxall.

Got a good mention from Ernie today. Perhaps an indication he might be pushing Siggie for a spot or perhaps be pushing Manny for his spot in the midfield in a Milligan like conversion. If Boxall was a capable DM that could be a handy thing for the AWs too...

Never thought Boxall had the mobility to play as a DM - but apparently he may have trimmed down?

Not on here, but there's been chatter.

End of an era.  Vinnie - It's over.

Looking forward to him starting at RB next game. I thought he did a pretty good job for Fenton last game - looked assured in defence. Will be interesting to see how he goes in an attacking sense - Merrick says he's the fastest in the squad over 20m.

As an aside, at the end of the article, Ernie is complaining about only being allowed 23 players compared to 26 for other A-League teams. Really? That doesn't sound right I thought all teams were only allowed 23. If this is this correct as that sounds very unfair.

Its 23 man roster in the First team salary cap but you can have 3 NYL players contracted outside that. We don't have a NYL team, so don't get them.

"Merrick said Boxall was the fastest in the squad over 20m" Really? I know we don't have the fastest squad but he looks pretty slows

A: we could have used those 3 spots for development. Image in Gulley was ranked 24 with 4 month training in a pro environment. Right now would be perfect for him to come in and cover

B: if Boxall is fastest over 20, what does that say for the 'pacy' Kenny and the rest of our squad. It's more likely to be 'one of the fastest' along with a couple others.

Wouldn't be able to play for Tee Dubs tho, as he would be a professional player registered with an Aussie club. We really need to find the cash for a NYL team if we want to properly develop the kids we sign.

As for Boxall, not really convinced by the thought of him at RB but I'll back Ernie's judgement atm. My big doubts are whether he can provide the same attacking intent as Fenton.

You have a point about losing some attacking firepower from the back with Muscat & Boxall, but what were the other options really -especially with Caira out. Bertos? Still not convinced he's the answer there, and didn't add much attacking wise from the back last year anyway IMO. The Sherminator? I'd take Boxall over him any day.  In fact I'm looking forward to seeing a bit more of Boxall, he's looked good at CB when given the chance, but is unlucky that Siggy & Dura have started to look more and more settled as the season's gone on (and Riera has started providing them with some real cover).

I cant wait to see more of boxall. And I think it is about time he gets more minutes on the pitch. As he is the heir apparent for the centre of defence. I cant remember a bad showing from him.

I have an amazing ability to find my way out of mazes. I'm pathological.

Boxall will do the job at RB.....certainly defensively he will be OK. We will be very solid with him and Muscat out wide. The only misgivings I have is that although he will get forward he does not have the zipp of young Fenton. He won't be as agile or as threatening. At the moment Ernie has the team playing a narrow game....Fenton was their to provide some width down the flanks. With Boxall there we will have less punch out wide. Previous Ernie had Muscat staying and Fenton bombing forward.....maybe now he could switch...get Muscat to attack more and Boxall defend more...seems like a more natural fit.

Losing Fenton makes the Nix game more predictable and easier to defend against. Other coaches will be pouring over the tapes working out how to stop the Stein/Boyd combo. With Fenton gone and the guarantee that sides will be working on shutting down Stein/Boyd then Ernie is going to have to come up with alternate attacking strategies......Brockie and Kenny really need to lift their games big time. Luckily we will have Carlos back.

Agree that this is a concern. Maybe, with the extra defensive solidity, we can switch from that 4-3-1-2 to a 4-2-3-1 to get more width at the attacking end. When Ernie first started playing the 4-3-1-2 Caira was on one side of the back 4 and Fenton on the other  and neither of them looked comfortable (Fenton has definitely improved since).

You wouldn't even need to change the lineup, could be something like this:

                                Moss

Boxall          Siggy              Dura        Manny

                      Riera            Lia

Brockie/(Boyd)      Carlos                  Kenny

                               Stein

Problem would be if Stein can manage the sole striker role... not great in the air and not super quick... been scoring a lot of goals recently at least though!

That's what I am saying. He would be signed to the club so spots 24, 25, 26 are Phoenix players

For the last one and half season's ive been coming to the sad realisation that to win the league we may need to change the centre back pairing.

Wondering whether people can see Boxall moving into the Centre and starting in the future?

"Who ate all the pies"

12 Feb 00:28

yes and yes.

Won't be this season though.

12 Feb 00:31

So no need to put money on the Nix winning the league this season with Siggy and Durante.

"Who ate all the pies"

12 Feb 00:33

Seem to be going alright so far?

12 Feb 03:00

i think boxall still has a lot of potential and a big future. With height and an engine like his, he can go a long way.

12 Feb 03:31

Siggy has been a liability for years.

Yes he scores the odd goal & last ditch tackle, but mainly just runs around all day like an excitable dog, throws his weight around & hoofs it long. Not exactly the composed & technical proficient centre back today's game requires. Especially with Ernie's new free-flowing way we play.

Boxallseems to be the natural successor and (like most young players) will make the move from out wide in to a central positon once he matures a little more.

12 Feb 03:35

The only thing I'm worried about is that we have two ageing centre backs, and only one replacement. Who will Boxall partner in the years to come?

12 Feb 03:42

I suspect it won't be Luke Adams.

12 Feb 03:45 · edited 12 Feb 03:46 · History

I think Siggy is fine this year. A few botched clearances but apart from that has been good. His distribution which people often complain about has been vastly improved this year. I think he has played better than Dura, but Dura has been good as well. Overall our defence has been pretty solid over the good streak. We have Boxall for the future, and Merrick has signed Adams as well who may or may not push on. I just don't understand these concerns.

14 Feb 00:01

I agree. Siggy has lifted his game under Ernie (who hasn't?). While he still has the fitness he should play on. Dura had a couple of whoopsies but some of his 1:1 tackles and clearances in the box were excellent and coolheaded, where others might have drawn a foul.

Their age is an issue as others said and they will not be around forever. While Boxall may switch to CB he still needs a partner. I  expect Ernie identifying a suitable replacement from the up-and-coming youth instead of buying someone. But it's unlikely two newbies will play at the same time, so I think Boxall will be playing a lot more often now, even if it is a FB role.

Actually, getting outplayed quite a bit these days

12 May 01:25

He'll be hard to replace with a decent local or Aussie.

They'll need a decent back-up to the aging Sigmund and Durante...

Shame he's gone but maybe good for his career if he flourishes in SA.

Big Pete 65, Christchurch

Would not be surprised if we got him back in a couple of years.

You know we belong together...

I read the South African football press a lot and this article appeared in arguably their best football publication today. Will be interesting to see how he gets on. Click here

Supersport United were trounced 4-1 by Crystal Palace in the semi-final of the Cape Town Cup today. According to reports, Michael Boxall had a torrid time and was one of three players substituted at half-time. He won't be playing Premiership opposition each week of course, but a period of acclimatisation definitely needed.

Substituted in a friendly at halftime - not uncommon Also only just got to SA

24 Jul 20:55
That's very true and I usually wouldn't read too much into a pre-season game. But the SA press were reporting Boxall struggled badly and weren't impressed. They can be pretty brutal in SA though. I am sure he'll settle in given time. Like I say, he won't be playing sides like Palace every week anyway.
