Fantastic player, great person and I suspect an even better coach. A couple of years in the MLS and I'm picking he will be back in the premiership. All the best to a legend.

Anyone get the feeling he will be unemployed when we are involved in the intercontinental playoff?  I'm personally gutted he's completely thrown in the towel on playing.

I appreciate that his retirement announcement was somewhat staggered and expected but I am a little perplexed by the amount of posts on this thread since he came out and made the formal announcement. He deserves a bit more

Thanks Ryan!

It was always a pleasure to watch you play, including a superman like effort in the WC :D

Wish you all the best in Toronto

That was great.  Graeme Hill was such a superb host...had the smarts and laughs.

Was Graeme Hill hosting Radio Sport again?

Grumpy old bastard alert

I heard them play some old stuff on RS yesterday and I might have heard him over the holidays on one of those talkback stations. I loved him when he was full time on RS, slightly left field but excellent. Loved the Abel Tasmans too.

No, just replaying an interview he did with Ryan Nelsen for the 'off the record' series back in early 2000s when he was at DC.  I really miss the glory days of RS with Devlin and Hill still there.  Really not the same now at all.

Was dissapointed they shifted Graeme Hill from the weekend morning show on Radio Live, it was a really good (and incredibly eclectic) listen.  He is a very good broadcaster.

 Superb

Ryan Nelsen has two bone defects in his knees and a hamstring held together with "screws and mesh", but still managed to walk away from Loftus Road as a legend today after playing his last professional football match of a 12-year career at the highest level.

Nelsen once again epitomised the fight and control that his QPR side has shown in defence over the past few weeks as they held second placed Manchester City scoreless in a 0-0 draw.

At the end of the game fans QPR fans chanted 'There is only one Ryan Nelsen,' while players gave Nelsen a guard of honour as a mark of respect for the New Zealander.

There was a kiwi sounding bloke interviewed on TV3 news after the game. That wasn't you was it? Lots of praise from English QPR fans for Nelsen. Was great to hear. One guy said he was their player of the season so far.

Have decided to retire my 2010 world cup All Whites shirt after getting it screenprinted with Nelsen's name on the back. Onya Nelsen, what a legend.

That's not a bad idea. Can a national team retire a jersey? If so it would be fitting

pretty sure they can't - in tournaments like WC etc numbers 1-23 (or whatever number they're allowed) must be used.

Must be time this thread is locked.  Maybe we need a kiwi coaching/managing overseas thread for the likes of Nelson, Wilkinson junior and senior etc

Personally I don't like retiring numbers. No matter who you are you are only a custodian of the shirt.
