I disagree with you to an extent their, he is in the team primarily as a spinner (well probably as an all-rounder) and the spinners job is to get wickets. Unfortunately he does not do that when he needs to these days.

He never has done... he's not that type of bowler given he doesn't turn it much, and we're never going to get a finger spinner coming out of NZ who is that type of bowler (nor from most other parts of the world) because of the decks.

How many ortho spinners who aren't freaks (ie: not Murali) can you name that do regularly run thru sides over the last twenty years?... maybe the Turbanator a few years back... one or two others but not consistently over several years by any stretch; and not compared to a wristy or Murali as you simply don't get the turning tracks as often these days because pitches are better and runs are scored quicker (making spinners potentially expensive) and hence why Dan has been as successful as he has - he can bowl long spells, be economical and usually picks up a wicket or two... on the odd occasion a few more.

The man, in our time and in our team has done brilliantly - as a spinner, and bowler. Who else would we have picked over the last 12-13 years instead of him?...

I never suggested picking someone ahead of him, my original point was that someone had written the article that said Vettori wasn't taking the wickets when his team needed.

Agree completely re spinners in New Zealand, it can't be an easy life. About your point on off-spinners(well it was about Ortho bowlers but the point still stand), read an article a couple of weeks ago on Cricinfo about the return of the off-spinner, Swann, Hauritz and Paul Harris from South Africa have all had very good last 18 months. Those guys have started taking wickets again.

Vettori before his injuries was a bigger turner of the ball and now doesn't impart that much on it. People also talked about the pressure at the other end, wouldn't it have been wonderful to see Bond and Vettori as a partnership develop. We can dream I guess....

So far all the other spinners in the match combined have only taken 4 wickets.  Even if spin accounts for the remaining 5 NZ wickets today Vettori's single effort of 6 wickets in the match looks pretty good to me.

Am pretty impressed by Tim Southee, if he can work on his consistency I can see a good bowling partnership developing between him and Vettori in years to come.

Can't see Williamson being a front line spinner, certainly will be a 2nd spinner whenever it is needed.

He will be wonderful for the balance of the team when they pick him

ICC T20 World Cup squad: Daniel Vettori, Shane Bond, Ian Butler, Martin Guptill, Gareth Hopkins, Brendon McCullum, Nathan McCullum, Kyle Mills, Rob Nicol, Jacob Oram, Aaron Redmond, Jesse Ryder, Tim Southee, Scott Styris, Ross Taylor.

For mine: B McCullum, Redmond, Ryder, Taylor, Guptill, Styris, Hopkins, Vettori, Mills, Southee, Bond.

My 11 would be McCullum, Ryder, GUptill, Taylor, Oram, Styris, Hopkins, Mills, Vettori, Bond, Southee.

Hope to see Oram coming in higher up the order as he needs more time to get himself in, in reality I think think Oram, Styris, Nathan mcCullum are all fighting for one spot.

I'd pretty much agree... B-Mac, JR, Guppy, RT, Pig, Crystal (Oram - cos he's so bluddy delicate), Hoppy, Dan, Millsy, Bondy, Timmy

Just hope they're all fit at the same time!
Yeah. Right.

Pretty much the same: McCullum, Ryder, Guptill, Taylor, Styris, Hopkins (possibly Oram) Vettori, Butler, Mills, Bond, Southee.

Really not liking Oram at the moment, he is just so hopeless. I think we stand a good of winning the tournament if we fire. I see no reason (except consistency) why we shouldn't.wellyphoenixfan2010-03-31 21:15:49

Why are we all picking Hopkins? Give McCullum the gloves, he's the best gloveman in the country and open up a batting/allrounder spot to someone else.

Yeah, he's pretty much on record that his long-term plan is to give up the gloves in all forms of the game and focus on his batting solely.

Why does this happen to all our best players?

Scott Styris - Can't be f**ked with Tests
Jacob Oram - Also can't be f**ked with Tests
Shane Bond - Our premium strike bowler. Can't be f**ked with Tests.
B-Mac - Our best wicketkeeper by a mile, but can't be f**ked to do it anymore.

Is NZ cricket trying to become a laughing stock?

Three for me, and two for them.

this.
Hopkins looked like he had figured out the international game though in the Aus ODI T20 series, thought he was actually one of our better players.

I like having the nurdling wippet coming in lower down, nice balance against the bashers around him.

Agreed Bopman.  I like that Hopkins bats as one of two - he keeps the runs ticking over, rotating the strike etc while the others hit out.  Think he's a good option for stabilising the middle lower order - nice to have someone who looks to build successive partnerships.

And Vettori the exception. Wanting to give up short stuff to extend his test career.

Only because he's statistically driven and wants to get the 4000/400 double.

None of the others have a chance to do anything of that magnitude in test cricket, so are just trying to prolong their careers for as long as they can.

Vaughan defends Black Caps' USA series
New Zealand Cricket chief executive Justin Vaughan is defending the decision to send the Black Caps to the United States for a Twenty20 series against Sri Lanka in May.

The three-match series will take place shortly after the Twenty20 World Cup concludes in the Caribbean.

Vaughan says the series is worthwhile for everyone concerned, as America wants to grow and develop the game and is happy to help out.

He hopes the series will be just the start of a long-term relationship with USA Cricket.

"It's a pretty small operation but USA Cricket is really wanting to grow and develop the game and we're happy to do our part in that."

I'm fairly sure that there have been some quotes from players basically saying this...The Australian test series was such a tease, like a small but glorious oasis in a desert.

I don't know if there is anything more hilarious than the IPL Scandal. It's massive - Bigger than the Storm scandal.

I hope they die a long, drawn out death, which ends days before the next IPL. I'd laugh so hard.
