Test cricket, bloody marvellous. Could see how much it meant to the boys to get that win, awesome to see Dan get the last 2 wickets aswell.

With Bondy back in the team our bowling lineup has some real fizz, now have to sort out the top order!

Yeah, an absolute thumping. Was well into day three the test so a bit more than two days, but nonetheless a huge win.

Gotta laugh at how it seems the two challenges are reserved for Chanderpaul and Gayle, who use them no matter what !

great win that. i think that referral system worked real well, way better than that one that we used when west indies were here. you can see what we were missing without bond.

yea poor windies, that was embarassing. i like how gayle just used a referal even though he was clearly out.

peter fulton, oh dear what are you doing. i would like to see macintosh dropped, he's dreadfull. got alot of young blood coming through

I have to disagree with timmy mac, i think he showed a tonne of guts in that second innings when coming off that fist baller and having players crumbling around him, and a damn fine slipper too.

I do agree with some of the young blood, i have a hell of alot of time for bj watling but he is very early on at this stage, macintosh is very similar to mark richardson and i think he and guppy are the right openers.

In fact i dont think there is alot wrong with the current side except for ryder when fit in for fulton(awful tall bald goon).

I was also glad to see oober get 3 good and imortant wickets in the second innings, does a tough unthankful job and is def our best third quick option around at the moment.

my problems with macintosh are that we needed to build a lead and do so leaving enough time to bowl them out, he didnt contribute to either of these happening. true, it was gritty but since when should we be applauding a 0 and 31 in a test match?

for mine, he needs to show in the next test match that he is capable of getting us off to a good start

I think the squad was for the first two tests so the only change we will see is Patel and Tuffey potentially in. No batting changes.

Daniel Flynn needs the cut surely
Permalink Permalink
over 16 years ago · edited about 5 years ago · History
Well who would you replace him or TM with? It would be different blokes with the same ineptitude at that level. There is NO ONE good enough. Flynn will be good enough in the future if he works hard on things like changing his pre-delivery movement, TM, I can't see making the grade.

Quick diagram of sorts:

Test cricket is here.

Australian FC cricket is here.

English FC cricket is here.

NZ FC Cricket is here.
Australian 2nd XI state cricket is here.

Yeah, you see Neil Broom get 196 for Otago, but if he got called up to NZ I'm sure he would struggle. It's almost like luck selecting the Blackcaps, you find some gems Guptill, who hasn't been scoring truckloads at FC level and some duds McIntosh and M.Bell who have been scoring a lot of runs at FC level.

This is exactly how I have described him. Also has a rubbish technique and doesn't remember to challenge the decision when he hit the cover off the ball. Have not got a lot of time for Fulton at all.

I Disagree, its hard to argue that he isnt out of form and maybe hasnt really hit form for te black caps but i think he is the right option at 3, his first class record is tops for such a young guy and at 24 has a really bright future. Has a few technical problems but he has been working exceptionally hard on that nad he def has the temperament for test cricket.

ANd the ducks that half the team got in the 2nd innings did help? it turned out to be a hellish 4th and 5th day pitch and his 31 while on its own maybe wasnt the best but if you look at it this way, our two highest partnerships of that second innings he was a part off, thats his job, to stick around and build innings with guys around him. He is never goin to go and smash a hundred of 120 balls but he will enable guptill, taylor, bmac etc to play around him. And clearly we did have enough time to bowl them out...cause we did. 3 sessions on that pitch always looked to be close to enough, sure we didnt bat them out of the game like we should have but i can hardly blame him for that.

As for the next match, for mine its guptill who is there to get us off to a "good start" as you put it and him to stick there with him.
And hey 0 and 31 was only 2 runs less then the paki openers got all together!

Thu 3 Rain. Southeasterlies. Fri 4 Showers with easterlies. Sat 5 Showers with little wind. Sun 6 Fine. Northerlies. Mon 7 Partly cloudy with northerlies.

Thu 3      Showers clearing and fine spells increasing. Southerlies easing.
Fri 4      Fine and cloudy periods. Southerlies dying out and northerlies developing.
Sat 5     Fine and cloudy periods. Northerlies picking up.
Sun 6      Rain. Northwesterlies.
Mon 7     Showers. Northwesterlies.

Slight change but still not looking like 5 days of cricket. Forecast is from metconnect.co.nz. However metvuw.co.nz tends to be more accurate and although it is different, it still predicts rain. Bugger.TopLeft072009-11-30 16:48:13

Just out of interest, in the game against Auckland at the Basin.. It looked like the test match pitch (I assume) had a cover on it during play ? Would've been a pain for close fielders.

Yeah mate, it's a mat made out of coconut husk. It protects the surface and keeps the moisture in the clay. Didn't seam to effect the game or the players as the ball bounces true off it. They all seam to be pretty ok with it and even if they didn't there's not a lot they can do - test match, obviously, gets priority.

Do you mean a Broom.  Because that would do just as much good as Neil Broom out there.  Another opener to come in for me, not sure who (How or Bell again maybe, or Watling?) and Guptill to 3 with Flynn out the door.

I think one solution is to stop employing rubbish coaches.

Another is to never again force a player into early retirement. Look at our team, who are our senior players? Vettori, McCullum, Bond - ok but Taylor should not be our senior batsmen. It is no wonder Dan and Brendon are always bailing us out with match saving knocks. The likes of Daniel Flynn and Tim Macintosh should be rubbing shoulders with much more experienced players than they are.

Personally, I think Chris Harris should get the recall. Knocking off a ton at 40 proves our first class cricket is too easy or he is just the man.

I think it's a mixture of both. Chris Harris is a class cricketer but it's no secret that our first class competition is a huge step bellow test level. Hence our problems with Fulton, Sinclair, Macintosh, Bell...
