Well done to the Breakers.

I'm not a basketball fan but if I was I'd support the (Auckland) Pirates. It looks like exactly the same situation applies for basketball as does with football i.e. absolutely piss all coverage in the NZ media for the local competition in favour of the Aussie comp. I never realised there was a local competition at all until very recently. It could, of course, be argued that I would never have realised that there was a NZ league at all if it wasn't for the Breakers, however, this is not the point. The point is that the NZ media, once again, fails to cover NZ sport. Have cofidence, have pride - this is NZ and does not need to lean on Australia.

Pretty sure that SKY cover the NBL - certainly it has a higher profile in the media than the ASB Premiership.

Nice try slipping this boring old argument in under the cover of the Basketball thread but seriously, do you actually believe this sh*t?

So according to you all our Super 15 teams, the Warriors, the Breakers, the Phoenix and the trans-Tasman netball teams all reflect a lack of national pride? That's some bizarre logic.

The NZ media doesn't fail to cover NZ sport - they generally cover the sport which is of interest to the public. Which, by the way, includes pretty good coverage here in Wellington of the Wellington Saints in the NBL. The Saints have a long history and are a well established and well supported brand here in Welly. They were even sponsored by Century City Developments from 2007-2009 (nice one Terry!).

The Breakers have just made history and done something really significant to actually increase the profile of basketball in NZ and all you can do is belittle it? Jesus wept!

And sorry, but if you didn't know there was a National Basketball League already then you are just being ignorant.

Not to mention all those who tuned in for a basketball game that wouldn't have otherwise, and all those who are taking up basketball now. And the fact the NZNBL was struggling before the breakers came along.

No, not the point at all.

Allegedly

...real coalface basketball was NZ Div 2.  Used to watch Peter Pokai play for Waitakere in the old second division before he made the big time.

The Breakers probably killed that too.

The Super 15 is a bit different as it features equal number of teams from all three nations that compete and also the national ITM cup receives good media coverage.

No, these teams do not reflect a lack of national pride, rather, the lack of coverage/support of the domestic competitions (rugby exepted) represents a lack of national pride.

The NZ media doesn't fail to cover NZ sport - they generally cover the sport which is of interest to the public.

Yes it does and also the media is, at least in part, resposible for what the public is interested in.

The Breakers have just made history and done something really significant to actually increase the profile of basketball in NZ and all you can do is belittle it? Jesus wept!

I was not belittling them at all - I was being quite genuine when I said well done.

Exchequer Saints in the 1980's were cool. 4 Championships. Kenny McFadden, Angelo Hill, John Saker etc.

Loved to hate them.

I can remember visiting my cousins and sneaking in through the squash courts at the New Plymouth YMCA to get in to watch Jacques Tuz play in a sold out game.

On another note I'm quite annoyed that TVNZ doesn't show more of our very succesful cheese rolling team.  They've been training hard but it is quite difficult without sponsorship and also now that dairy prices are going up.

I will continue to support grass roots coal face NZ cheese rolling all the whey to the cheese rolling champs.

Would be fantastic if Akld had a team - would make for a great Derby.

It helped a lot that the Saints were sponsored by the nightclub that was the holy grail for a teenager in Wellington to try and sneak into.

I don't hear any wellingtonian basketball supporters hating the breakers for ruining the NBL.

Perhaps stupidity is just a football thing. Or an Auckland thing ("I don't mind a nz team in an australian competition - as long as it's in Auckland)

Allegedly

02 May 05:07 · edited 09 Sep 05:22
Cue HappyTed - i never supported them in Auckland (although I do reme, ber him saying when he was in Aus before arriving here he supported the Knights).
Cue Ali and Chris - making some statements that are clearly ill-informed about the history of football prior to 2010...

Nick Mills - who has been involved in the club for nearly 30 years and is current CEO - would like to see the Saints move into the Australian National Basketball League.

They should make a combined Wellington/Nelson team. The Nelson Giants have Phil Jones, Mika Vukona, Josh Bloxham (all part of the grand final) and Tall Black Mike Fitchett. They have a huge following, the Giants are the biggest sporting team in Nelson. You automatically gain a bigger fan base that would sell out games in Nelson and a massive depth of good players. Nayland College also finished fourth at secondary school nationals, so there's some young players coming through. Add that to everything the Saints has and you have a Central NZ team.

Yeah, but then that'd weaken the breakers wouldn't it?
04 May 05:35 · edited 09 Sep 05:22
I don't think it would significantly weaken the Breakers, especially if that article is implying that the spine of the team would come from the Saints. Could also try and sign a couple of Kiwis who play for other NBL teams, like Tait and Jones who both play for Cairns.

How often do we call for a second A-League team out of NZ?

The fact we are the NBL champions is the best time to show our depth. Phil Jones - Nelson. Lindsay Tait - Wellington.

Not sure what your point is there.

You can get $36 tickets (must purchase in person) for the TAB Final Four bartercard NBL at TSB Arena.  Great value for 3 games of BBall.

Did anybody watch the Breakers last night?  I knew they'd make a strong come back.
and is anyone going to the Saints tonight?  Seems a bit strange they'd get rid of the guy that scored them the most points last week though.

07 Apr 09:17 · edited 09 Sep 05:22
Breakers get up, and get a home final. Great performances by Tom, Dillon, Pledge, CJ and Daryl.
07 Apr 09:28 · edited 09 Sep 05:22
And Tom has done his ankle, that might be crucial
07 Apr 23:01 · edited 09 Sep 05:22
If Tom is injured then I think they've got enough back up to still win the series.  And they have to play Perth.

Hope young Thomas's injury isn't too bad, it was a cheap shot, ya dont foul like with such little time left, and the result known.
20 Apr 08:45 · edited 09 Sep 05:22
will anyone be watching the Breakers tonight.  I think they can wrap it up tonight, will probably be close though.

20 Apr 11:24 · edited 09 Sep 05:22
Breakers looking good so far, but this is going to be tight I think.
20 Apr 11:46 · edited 09 Sep 05:22
CJ is on fire atm, 10 point lead
20 Apr 12:54 · edited 09 Sep 05:22
That was a terribly soft play to end it.

Allegedly

20 Apr 12:55 · edited 09 Sep 05:22
Breaker's let that one slip, so many chances near the end and they couldn't put them away.
22 Apr 02:35 · edited 09 Sep 05:22
well I was wrong about winning the series 2 zip. But it was a close game.  I'm sure they'll finish the job on Tuesday.  Strange night for a final but another sold out game, they will be happy with the extra dosh they are getting.
