I don't think you should use that language. Have to wonder: could you not remember where you were in 1981 or most likely you were not even a wink in your dads ball sacks at the time.http://www.nzonscreen.com/title/patu-1983If you can be bothered going back in time a bit. Features Hone and one or two others in retro! You also get to see the disdain the Nats of the time- some of whom are in the current cabinet- have for the rest of us. Paul Henry (and the median wage dropping again) is just an extension of Muldoon's cacus giving the fingers to protestors and laughing.ummmmm....and junior? errrr? saywhat? It's not particularly

left wing to oppose racism or to value the
rule of law, say:c_id=1&objectid=10676731">http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.

But then again this lot are
making a whole lot of things far to the left because they are lurching
right under the guise of some really good PR. Really have to thank
Henry for showing them up.
your argument = your younger,I'm older and therefore wiser. I bow down to your superior point of view

No Tegal.

My argument: We shouldn't call somone an f-in this or that, especially if you are not aware of what they have done. Probably not a nice thing to do even if they are- there's a fair amount of restraint on this forum!

The Commonwealth nations agreed to take all practical steps to avoid sporting contacts with Apartheid South Africa. Muldoon decided to break that agreement in order to win the 1981 election on law and order issues in the rural rugby loving marginal seats. Which he ended up doing, despite the opposition having more votes than him over all.

John Minto stood up to racism, both here and in South Africa, and for the New Zealanders who thought we should be honouring our commitment to the Commonwealth and not supporting the Apartheid regime.

This is something important to our countries' history- we saw police on the streets  in riot gear some without patches, we saw someone threatening to fly a plane into a grandstand, we saw mobs of rugby supporters in Hamilton without fear of police intervention go round dragging protestors from their houses and beating them up.

This is important to me as a New Zealander, who doesn't believe in categorising and segregating people by the appearance of their skin, as was done in Apartheid South Africa.

Seriously though- Patu is worth watching and it is all online at NZ on Screen.

Making the headlines...

India has condemned "racist and bigoted" remarks by a New Zealand TV presenter who made fun of Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Diksh*t's surname.

Profile pic. Should you be interested. Lakhsen, on the right, lost touch with him.
Mohammed, on the left, I'm still in touch with. He's now living in Agadez, Niger. More focused on his animals now as tourism has dried up. Is active with a co-op promoting local goods, leather work and bijouterie, into Europe.

Dudebrah hits the nail on the head. It's about intention, not semantics. Which works both ways - saying 'racist' things isn't always racist. It's like racist jokes that highight the adsurdity of being a  racist, rather than the implied foibles of a certain race.

On Australian radio, comperes would often make fun of Diksh*t's name, followed by putting on Indian accents, and the intention was clearly racist.

You could maybe get away with just laughing at a name, Paul Henry went further and said this:

"Its so appropriate, because shes Indian, so shed be d*ck-in-sh*t wouldnt she, do you know what I mean? Walking along the street"

I think it's understandable that people would get offended by that. The problem TVNZ has here, is that they sell Breakfast as a mainstream show, with supposedly credible news, interviews, as well as their light-hearted stuff about dogs or whatever. It's in that context that leads to complaints when offensive things are said. If they wanted to chuck him on at 10pm at night to be a wally, it wouldn't be such a problem for people. I mean, 7 Days says all sorts of offensive stuff, but it's up front about being a comedy / satire show. The context is crucial.

Finally
people are seeing it for what it is.
The Henry episode is causing people to wake up to the fact that our formerly credible and reliable news service on our public broadcasting television is in fact a COMEDY show and  merely light entertainment....and that will probably be the excuse..."he was only having a laff!"

This dicksh*t thing is completely blown out of proportion. On the radio the other day they were taking the piss out of it. But the interesting thing today on the Edge, they played an interview with her where she said it's pronounced Dick sh*t. So the people who say it's Dixit are completely wrong.

I don't defend what Henry said for a moment but I think the reaction has grown to be completely disproportionate to the offence.

I think his suspension is totally appropriate as are the apologies for the offence caused however;

1). I think the continued indignation in India is starting to look more like the press here making a mountain out of a mole hill (i.e. a great chance to get Henry and / or manufacture the perception of an international incident) or

2). It is starting to look like a convenient diversion from the empty stands etc at the games. I would have thought anyone who has the political nous to get to be a Chief Minister in India has to have pretty thick skin and would also have better things to worry about (e.g. millions of poor and destitute) than some pratt the other side of the world.

The issue isn't the pronunciation. It's what he said after he laughed about the name - "it's funny because she's Indian...etc"

I agree that he crossed the line. My view though, is that he said something that certainly was racist, but I don't think PH is 'a racist'. He says things for entertainment, purposely pushing the boundaries with controversial remarks because it GENERALLY is entertaining. I don't think he rehearses any of it and gets carried away occasionally. I genuinely don't think he thinks Indian people are inferior to himself - which basically defines racism.

Whoooo: If you don't get the point, you will never get the point. No one gives a rat's arse as to whether you think her name is funny, it's irrelevant. Read Paul Henry's quote again and come back and tell us whether you think it is racist.

look, I think he stepped over the line when he said "it's appropriate cause she's Indian" but in saying that I think he is talking about something else entirely. For example the commonwealth games.

the fact is People have over reacted and now all the Paul haters have come out of their holes now because they can have a feed.

ffs BREAKFAST is morning entertainment. Without him = no entertainment = me not watching which surely = 1000's not watching = no more BREAKFAST.

While it is fair enough to say there has been an over-reaction, stories on the Herald website this week on Paul Henry have been incredibly popular and it is safe to assume that has been the case elsewhere. The response from the public has been immense, from both supporters and those who are appalled. It is worth noting that while some correspondence shows people are over-reacting, a lot of those who have come out in support have been overtly racist in doing so. You should see some of the emails we got at the Herald. This whole issue really has exposed an underlying issue of racism in our country that should be talked about and addressed. More often than not, ignorance lies at the heart of it. If this controversy gets us to address it, good.

I won't be watching breakfast.
I just hope that Paul can come back on a show that will let him be the way he is.

So you won't watch a TV programme because one of the presenters isn't on it?

Does that imply that the content of the programme was secondary to the presenter?

+1.

Hopefully he can start up a new show as Stefan said. Although I expect they will be some time away.

Presenters are rather important to shows like that, wouldn't you say?

For the record, I think 'Diksh*t' is funny to laugh at in an immature way, but its the bit afterwards that was over the line...I didn't even really get what he was saying? Appeared to mean that Indians are dicks who live in sh*t?! Poor stuff.

Fair enough - each to their own.

I had assumed it presented news and information with a bit of commentary.

I only would watch it when I was travelling - and not for long. Couldn't stand the man.

I don't have a lot of time for Henry but him "resigning" is a punishment totally disproportionate to the offence - when you assess the offence in the context etc it was committed.

I don't condone for a moment what he said but it should not have been, in my opinion, a career ending mistake.

The more we try to sanitise society the more ridiculous it will get - people make mistakes and he was punished for it.

Yeah to me it was the PH show with the added extras of current news/sport/weather (obviously) but it was usually the news where he got his ammo from so it always ended in him stirring something/someone up. Love him.
