I'm not saying abandon your car, but people are incredibly over reliant on them. My point was complaining about fuel prices is ridiculous when they actually don't reflect the true cost of burning them at all.

Is there a break down of costs that we pay at the pump vs the environmental cost?  I'd be interested in seeing where this subsidy comes from.

Back to my flavour kf the moment. Mobil at Petone by the rrailway station are charging $2.12.9 per litre and yet Mobil in Featherston are charging only $1.84.9 per litre. Can someone explain the 28 cents per litre difference? Especially from the same petrol company.

supply/demand and how much competition there is in their area. Just like any business. 

I thought one price for the whole country based on what the oil companies predict the price per barrel in 3 months time? Then so e regional coincils had a 5 or 10 per litre tax grab to keep them in leather chairs and expensive lunches.

Basically you've got:

Price of oil

Tax

Supply

Demand

Competition.

The price of a barrel of oil being just one of these factors - it is the one that is most consistent across each petrol station (and tax). So Price of barrels increase = price at all stations increase. Whereas demand and competition (and perhaps supply?) is what creates differences in price between each petrol station.

I like to use this when travelling as Gas at home is always cheapest at the same station which is just a minute down the road.

Carteton, Greytown & the Mobil at the backend of Masterton were charging between 1.86.9 - 1.88.9

Chorus - Fixing our phone line.

So the technician is supposed to turn up at between 09:00 and 12:00. At 13:30 I find a card saying the problem was fixed, (our internet and phone cutting out at peak times). The tech had not come up to explain what had happened. Still we thought it was the outside relay so sweet.

I log on to the net - nothing. I tried phoning Chorus of course the phone is dead. So nothing works now even outside peak times.

Call Chorus get a very helpful guy he gets the tech to return a couple of hours later.

Tech buggers about for 30 mins. "It's all right now" he says. I say "What about the internet? As I noticed he's not gone near the Modem or other phone jack. 'Yes it's all working" He replies.

I ask him to stay, whilst I check. The Internet is dead still. Tech can't believe it I have to tell him twice it's still dead, (what the f*ck do you expect when you've not checked it?) 

Another 45 minutes and finally he's fixed it and although reluctant to do so does stay around whilst I reboot the comp.  I reckon he could have done the job in around an 2 hours but this job basically took him all day. If I'd not checked I would have had to call him out again and It wouldn't have been fixed that day.

The whole process for us has taken days to get sorted because of Vodafone and then Chorus.

Tech Guy - In future just do your job probably. Check to see you've fixed it rather than assuming it's fixed and buggering off.

Gone are the days when you just report a doggy line and someone comes out and just fixes it.

When I worked there we had faults reported, attended and fixed within 6 working hours. And if a faultman did not show up within 10 mins of the appointed time, customers used to get onto us asap from neighbours phones to let us know. Now days it is "sometime in the morning or sometime in the afternnon" and if they think they can fix it without eye balling the customer, they will.

I have found the Vodafone guys much better than the Post Office guys or is it Telecon guys or is it Chorus or is it Spark or whatever they wish to call themselves these days. it's hard to keep up with the all re-invented names. I think they were call Blue Star at one stage too.

If there is a single Gasoline Alley or Gull station it is likely their price is driving down the others in the area.

But it can be as simple as getting off a main road as well, don't know prices currently, but Porirua Mobil & BP are generally 5c (Or more) cheaper than their stores in Paremata & Mana.

It seems to me Vodafone, etc "rent" the lines and the actual physical side of maintaining them are done by Chorus. Who actually owns them I've no idea.

Pretty sure after the split of Telecom, with Chorus 'created' that now Chorus owns & maintains the lines while Spark, Vodafone etc just rent them. (Unless you are on Cable - Old Saturn/Clear/Telstra, now Vodafone, in which case Vodafone actually own them).

This is why Vodafone etc have to book a Chorus tech to come out, and why it can be such a pain to get a time etc. Chorus have no worries about losing your service because even if you switch from Vodafone to Telecom what do they care you still give them exactly the same amount of money no matter who your retail company is.

drove past the petrol station yesterday and the price had jumped to $2.02.9 so went up by almost 20 cents in one day, i know our prices have been cheaper than other towns and cities but that much of a jump is a bit of a kick in the guts for motorists here.

I filled up in Carterton at $1.88.9 on Saturday. 

Little known fact that I know as someone from Carterton.

Here is confirmation of this from Stuff. Gull had falsely set their price low in the regions at $1.80ish, and everyone else followed and was running at a loss to do it. Then Gull had to lift their price so everyone else did as well.

I imagine the commerce commission would be all over that behaviour. Crazy they've come out in the media and basically said they were employing predatory pricing!
