Lance Armstrong - 'cheat' or not

What do you mean or not? He clearly is a cheat.

Three for me, and two for them.

Yes. But his attempts at claiming innocence all those years, along with bullying fellow riders out of the Tour, make him a massive twat.

Three for me, and two for them.

Only because he was the main part of the most sophisticated PED system ever conceived.

To be fair (and i mean this), i can no longer take cycling, or most other of these events like track and field, seriously. Knowing that competitors could be so much faster, stronger, and better looking while on the juice - it ruins it for me knowing theyre holding themselves back.

Look at Nadzeya Ostapchuk as another example, on a cycle she was simply too good for anyone. In this case though while more joocy in appearance, she  looked uglier, but you get my point

Please tell me you aren't saying you'd rather athletes be allowed to go nuts with PED's and compete in open competition??

Thats exactly what im saying. I dont know how Bolt sleeps at night knowing he could slash another 2 seconds off his own world record. And then when technology gets better would could see things like more advanced bionic limbs at the paralympics, and steroids, then they could probably be even faster still.

Somewhat dodgy-pervy, but this evening at the supermarket check out I was served by a very pleasant and cheerful young lass.  Bob Marley was playing in the background and she was quietly singing along as we waited for my eftpos card to chunder through the transaction.

The movie Hall Pass. Actually has some proper humour in it. Kind of like American Pie but for grown ups.

Ok yeah youre right, that little bit of PED is what made him win, and not dedication and hard work, or even genetic factors like the length of his femurs and torso. Maybe we should limit all cycling into categories where limb length and muscle fiber composition are meticulously measured just so nobody gets their precious feelings hurt over something being unfair.

What you describe are natural advantages. PED are clearly not.

So why wasn't he rated as a great TdF potential winning prospect with all these physical advantages (which are a bit of a yarn, nothing more than Armstrong's spin) until he started doping himself to the eyeballs?

At the end of the day, i have as many Tour de France titles as Lance Armstrong.

Three for me, and two for them.

The Americans did rate him as the next Lemond.  I can remember him turning up as world champion in 1994 and the TV coverage raved about him but at the bottom of the first big climb (possibly Hautacam) he was struggling to stay with the Peleton let alone those cycling away and competing for the title.

WIthin a year or two he was dominant on those same climbs.  I've been certain where this was going to end up ever since.

Yeah, I think a lot of people outside of the US have known this, without having the 'smoking gun', for a long time.

But his PR machine has been frighteningly effective, especially in the US, and he managed to get away with it for quite a while.

And trained a lot less for them too. So overall more efficient/effective.

But you've probably trained more than he has.

Actually, there's quite lot of academic research that argues that drugs should be allowed in sport and that the focus of testing should shift to health (and safety) not drugs.

For example, this article in the British Journal of Sport Medicine:

Why we should allow performance enhancing drugs in sport

Interesting point of view.

Sucks for the guy who doesn't want to be drugged up to the eyeballs though. If you want to go that way, have 2 competitions - 1 for actual athletes, and another for roid robots.

Why? During the Beijing olympics the north korean gymnasts got caught for doping...but, they got last place in most events anyways.

So doping does not guarantee a win. You can still win clean

But you're disadvantaged just because you don't want to pump yourself with drugs. You say some still finish last, but some also win with the advantage that PED gives them. It makes the result a joke if there isn't a level playing field.

Ha ha!!
Profile pic. Should you be interested. Lakhsen, on the right, lost touch with him.
Mohammed, on the left, I'm still in touch with. He's now living in Agadez, Niger. More focused on his animals now as tourism has dried up. Is active with a co-op promoting local goods, leather work and bijouterie, into Europe.
