Rapa have signed Tasman's Swedish striker Ermal Hajdari and he looks a good acquisition. Was all over the park against the Greeks and scored two well taken goals. Could've been more than 3-2 had Rapa taken their chances. Ifill only played the second half. This weekends top of the table clash with Wests will be a cracker!!

It's also believed struggling Taranaki, who are currently on 11 points, have also been deducted three points for playing an ineligible player. If, as believed, Taranaki lose the points it will drop them to eight points and below Marist.

Could make relegation battle interesting if true.

Yeah sounds more like a dodgy local sports writer getting his facts wrong. Probably something Rufer dreamed up

Well, since it was most likely in a match they lost (there have been a lot of those recently), they wouldn't lose any competition points right? Just the match adjusted to a 3-0 loss (if it wasn't 4-1 loss to NCR or the 3-0 loss to United), and a $100 fine?

I froze my tits off with Hard News on Saturday evening to watch the Battle of the Bottom (tm).

We missed the first 15 minutes and also two goals. Marist had scored twice by then and proceeded to absolutely monster Lower Hutt for the remainder of the first half.

Cooksley and Cowan as a centre-midfield pairing is pretty fearsome. They are a fantastic combination of just plain very good, fairly combative, and wiley. Cowan is particularly good, as we all know. Lower Hutt by comparison are quite good (they have two Team Wellington players in midfield, don't forget), but a bit more fragile and not nearly so wiley.

For that first 45 minutes (well, the 30 of it that we saw) Cowan covered miles of ground. He put in some sturdy challenges, set up attacks, got himself out of trouble by winning clever free kicks (causing much frustration for You Yellows) and just generally put on a clinic. Cooksley mopped up everything else and forced Lower Hutt to go slowly in transition, which doesn't really suit Lower Hutt who love a quick counter.

The goal that we did see was set up by Cowan. He picked up the ball in midfield, turned his man, ate up some space, before delicately slipping in Aaron Richardson (I think) who just had to scuff a toe poke under Lower Hutt stand in keeper Scott Dunn to make it 3.

At half time one can only assume that a) Adam Cowan said he was tired, b) Nathan Cooksley said it was too cold and c) Lower Hutt's middle-of-the-pitch sit-down talking to worked because in the second spell Lower Hutt had all the ball.

Cowan shifted to playing a lone striking role. Cooksley was subbed. And Lower Hutt began to assert themselves more and possess the ball for longer periods.

Credit to Marist though, this didn't really rattle them. They dropped deep, leaving no space in behind. Space in behind is oxygen to the likes ot Hailemariam and (when he came on) Diane. They don't really do quick passing around a man, or dribbly trickery to beat a man, or anything except the direct run to goal. Take that away and they get very frustrated. And so they did.

Cowan and their other zippy striker were giving Lower Hutt's back four a torrid time. Just too much pace and guile. Every clearance Marist lumped forward you thought "well if they can just get on the end of this it could be a chance." So came their 4th goal. A long hoof forwards, some Cowan guile, a corner, and a very good one at that, and an unchallenged header at the back post.

Totally against the run of possession but not really against the run of play, if you know what I mean.

Lower Hutt's consolation goal was only that.

At this stage of the season you turn to look at teams' runs in. Lower Hutt don't have an easy one, although they do play a couple of the bottom four. I just can't see them picking up points against the Greeks though. Team Taranaki will be in their sights and could be three, but otherwise it's hard to see where they'll get enough to climb out of the whole they've dug for themselves.

Could this be the season where Lower Hutt go down and Petone come up? There'd be some celebrating at Memorial Park if that happened!

Marist on the other hand don't have a much easier run but do have about half of those games at home. Which helps them immensely. If they can keep Cowan and Cooksley playing they'll cause any visiting team some trouble.

If I was a gambler I'd say that of the bottom four Marist (assuming Cowan/Cooksley) and Olympic are pretty safe. The Naki and You Yellows are in real strife.

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.

Is there any truth that TT are going to lose their points from their 1st game of the season to Marist? I herd both Capital and Central football agreed they could play certain players but Marist went to NZF and they have backed them. But then on the flip side in the same game, Marist have then done what Petone did and played a player not on the team card. So the question is who gets the points? Could be interesting in wash and make the relegation battle even tighter?

what was so special about the players involved?

Did TT actually protest the team card (in time)?

If both teams have played an ineligible player (ie. not registered, not on team card), then both teams get 0 points from the match, and it is not replayed.

If both teams are null and void then that would see Marist with its 2 recent wins jump ahead of both Lower Hutt and Team Taranaki.  Looking like a 2/3 horse race at the TOP of the table and at the BOTTOM also.  Middle of the road will be what it is.

I watched the Naki play stop Out on Sunday, they are pretty well drilled and workman like but struggled to offer too much in attack. I hope they survive this season and build for the next.

And to think, some on this forum picked TT as title contenders  ????? I watched them play Rapa who annilated them.  As for Lower Hutt, I'm picking Coleman will be sacked end of season. They must be favourites for relegation.

Who picked them as title contenders???  Lower Hutt offering little as of late.  Marist put them to the sword at home.    Marist must be slowly getting tired of just surviving.  A common theme where they pull just enough results to stay comfortable in the league. Will they do it this year.  Taranaki seem to defend ok but not score.  Hard for them to attract players (goal scorers) like welly based sides etc

Marist clobbered them but it was a game of two halves. Lower Hutt weren't bad in the second spell, and there was only really a good player or two difference between the two teams.

Is there a Phil Keinzley equivalent in Taranaki? Wairarapa seem to manage to attract players okay.

Todd Energy. Todd family are squillionaires. Probably worth half NP's financial output. But getting  them interested is another thing.

So who apart from me is going to Wests Wairarapa on Sunday?

And can anyone local tell me what the state of affairs is at Endeavour Park in terms of refreshments?

Think Rapa will beat Wests, they're much more solid in defence now with Kaltack and Coad at fullback and Allan and Hall-Jones in central defence. Midfield is strong with Cameron Lindsay, Cory Chettleburgh and Alex Risdale, and arguably the best front three in the league in Ifill, Mason-Smith and Hajdari. That's some line up, and should be too strong for Wests. If Rapa win I see them going on to win the league. They seem a far stronger and cohesive unit this season. They're also getting good crowd numbers at Memorial Park.

agree with most of what you say about Rapa but have you watched Wests this season? They play a very high tempo quick passing game and keep the ball away from the opposition and they have started to shoot from further out (unlike last season), although the still do try to walk the ball over the line. They are a very strong squad and even when they lose a couple of players back to the US college's I doubt that's going to hurt them much. I wouldn't say the winner of this game will go on to win the league, but I think the winner of the league will be one of these 2 teams

This will be a very interesting game, definitely game of the round
