football league play-offs over here are very successful, with even teams who finish 3rd in the league accepting that they may not go up as they deserve.

Also, this seems to have been missed - remember how funny it was when Petone lost the play-off?  Imagine how funny it will be if United beat Tawa?

Worth having for that potential of funny.
Petone lost in the play-offs to Team Taranaki before they made the final stage. Team Taranaki made Central League. That's they way is was supposed to work. Petone made Central League the next season by winning the play-offs and also then came 2nd in Central League if I remember correctly

Its no longer a problem.

if you finish last youve blown it and its someone else's turn. Good enough for the premiership and good enough for every other capital football grade. If you are the most successful side in your league you deserve to be rewarded and if you are the worst performing side in your league you deserve to punished.

Reward = opportunity to play off for Central League.
Punishment = risk of losing place in CL. Pretty black and white.

If it was to change I wouldn't be entirely against it. The teams will know all season that there is a danger of automatic relegation and it would probably make for some great games of football from the desperate bottom teams.

in other words you are sitting on the fence til you find out if you are relegated or not..

No. Of course I don't want to get relegated but I can see it from yours and others point of view. Sitting on the fence either way. I think both ways are fair but if one team from CP could win promotion automatically, they could end up getting spanked all season. The play off at least gives them an indication of whether they are good enough or not. If they lose to the last placed CL team then they are NOT good enough.

Fuck this stupid game

how is it any different from going from cap 1 to premier? or being promoted in any other grade for that matter.

Besides the big jump in skill level there's a lot of extra costs in CL,  from travel expenses to strengthening your squad

so because it costs more to play in a league you should have to play up to 6 games instead of 1 to qualify?

If cost was the issue clubs wouldnt enter the promotion games in the first place

Theoretically home advantage is not there for the lower divisions as there is minimal travel distance. So the playoff between a Wellington based team, and palmy team and a hawkes bay teams needs to have home and away as part of the procedure.

Like I've said before: get the 4 teams into a hat and have two semi-final home and away playoffs. and then a home and away final.  Much more a level playing field that way.

You have to play the additional games as the other northern regions have just as much rights to play in CL as CP.  Also Im not saying that money is the only reason but over the years clubs have played the promotion games only to realise afterwards that playing in the league wasn't achievable for one reason or another

sorry you have lost me. We agree that the Central winner(s) shouls play against the CP winner. It's just that the CL loser should not be in the mix. What clubs are you talking about who have been promoted but couldnt afford it?

It doesn't matter really, just look at the history:

2005 - Stop Out beat Red Sox and get promoted (Red Sox stayed in as Havelock pulled out)
2006 - Taranaki beat Red Sox and get promoted
2007 - Petone beat Taranaki and get promoted (Taranaki stayed in as Gisborne pulled out)
2008 - Wairarapa beat Stop Out and get promoted

In short, no Central League team that has finished bottom has won a play-off.

Play-off or no play-off Wellington United are going to be relegated, and either Tawa or Red Sox are going up.

The other issue is that no promoted team has struggled in the season after promotion so the idea that they need the playoff to prove their worth is a bit of a red herring

Normo's coming home

I have nothing against Petone (in fact, I think it is a great club), but that did tickle me.

There is a gap between the Central League and the feeder leagues into it. You just need to look at the Chatham Cup results to see that. If it was a straight feed from say Cap Premier to Central league then ok it becomes a straight swap and the teams can get the player strength to deal with the gap. Its not so you cant compare it to the EPL and championship. If you cant beat Wellington United in two games on agg then you deserve to go home. You say United are crap but did you see all the games and looking at their 6 draws they were only seconded to olympic with 7. Even Mirimar only just scraped home. get over it turn up and play.

Absolute pearler of a day up in Palmy. No wind, sunny and a fairly good looking deck as well. And a good atmosphere thanks to a bus load of Tawa supporters.

Red Sox had the better of the first 10-15, but once Tawa got through that they dominated completely. Could have been 3-4 up at half time, and were all over the Sox. Karl and Rudi on the left were quality.

Apparently it was a 30 yarder from Steve Romijn, unfortunately I chose that moment to check on my son, so missed it.

Unless Red Sox had some players out I think a 2 or 3 goal win by Tawa in the 2nd leg.

Didn't taranaki successfully defend against Petone in 2006?  Beat them in a penalty shoot out, but then struggled and came last in 2007.

No, Taranaki won their local league and then beat Petone on pens after two legs tied 1-1, and then beat Red Sox in the promotion / relegation match.

I think the reason the bottom Central League teams struggle in the play-offs is the momentum - they have been losing or drawing all year, and they come up against a team that has been winning all year and also have the momentum through the play-offs and that coupled with the long wait for the CL team to play = Wellington United going down.

Winning is a habit, and so is losing.

Tawa deserved the win, and probably should have won by more, but Red Sox were a tough side...a step up from Capital Premier for sure.  Tawa had most of the chances and I can't remember Lance having too much to do in goal for Tawa.

Red Sox's goalkeeper was MOM for them...he made at least half a dozen terrific saves to keep the scoreline down.

Stevie Romijn's winner was a cracker and he was superb throughout. Rudi Coetzer and Ricky Stevenson also stood out for me.

Second leg next week should be another good game.

Massive props to the Tawa supporters who made the trip and turned it into a home game for Tawa.

There's only one Stevie Romijn!

So who's going to be getting down to the game on Saturday at Endeavour at 2pm to watch this important clash. Hopefully a lot of people will be wanting to come down to support Tawa as there is no other footy games I know of on Saturday. Big crowd hopefully
