I think someone has done their sums wrong in that article though....the only hope Tawa have of winning the league is if they win all 3 of their remaining games, and they then require Wairarapa to lose or draw (and if the 'rapa draw, Tawa needs to improve their goal difference).

Oh, and hopefully the cup doesn't make the trip to Masterton on Saturday, with the game recently transferred to Carterton

Just to confirm that Marist "Not Supplied" is still Greg O'Connor

Feverish, why was your game postponed? and when to?

he should change his name
tell us about the game- you guys needed a win really aye?

I told Cap Ftbl at 10 am that if they changed it to Karori then we would take a default if the ref said he didnt like it. Someone making a phone call to the ref was put in the too hard basket apparently  -so after doing our team talk somewhere else we turned up at Onepoto and put up the nets, but would be lucky if cows wanted to graze there - grass that hadnt been mowed in ages and crap. So despite having a full strength side we were unanimous that we should flag it as would have been a joke and ended up with people getting injured.
Prob end up with a double header.

True true feverish... i know personally we'd rather you didn't take a default.

Our match? yes 1 point was pretty much irrelevant to us in the grand scheme of things. Basically we decided to play into quite a strong breeze in the first half, on what was a reasonable surface (if a bit bumpy and with 2 mudpools for goal mouths). The Rapa had a bucktload of chances, most of which went high and wide. We were playing mainly on the counter attack but went 1-0 up when a centering pass from the Rapa went straight across the face of their goal keeper to Greg who slid it in before the keeper could make it.

2nd half we were pretty defensive again, and unfortunately a couple of missed oppurtunities to clear the ball gave their (substitute) left winger the chance to put in a nice cross and Sule nodded home at the far post (and take the Rapa scoring record supposedly). After that both teams looked for the win and there were a fair number of missed chances at both ends.

Pretty fair result in the end, if it wasn't for the situation we were in I'd have been pretty happy to take the point. Reasonable sized, good natured crowd showed up too.

And I'd hope Tawa would at least have a go at playing a few people up front and going for the goals. I feel that the Rapa deserve to win the league, but I'd like to see Tawa give it one last throw (even if it is a long shot).

dissapointing on sst that the game was called off feverish at about 2-20pm. i agree both teams thought the ground was in a poor state. but the fact that we both had travelled all that way and the refs had said the game was being played initially, we should have just got on with it? it was the same for both teams i suppose, and yes you looked to have a strongish side out. we just want to get the season finished as thats our 4th game called off by a ref now!
i think your coach conned the ref to call it off maybe over the fact he wanted to piss capital soccer off for not allowing you to play at karori?? it worked!!
when will the remaining fixtures be posted, so we can see whats happening? anyone know?

Anyone know what the draw is going to be this week?

Marist only have LH to play, Karori and Tawa have LH as well, Karori still have Wests and Tawa on top of that I believe

so maybe Karori vs Tawa and LH vs Marist (with the Wests vs Karori probably not needing to be played at all)

or possibly Karori vs Wests and Tawa vs LH

Striker Seule Soromon has scored a record 26 goals for Wairarapa United in their Capital Soccer premier division campaign this season but the header he netted in the second half of Saturday's match with Marist at Howard Booth Park, Carterton promises to be the most important of all of them.

That goal in what was Wairarapa United's 18th and final match of their premier division programme earned them a 1-1 draw and meant that second-placed Tawa needed a near miracle in their two catch up games next weekend to snatch the title from their grasp.

If Tawa beat both Lower Hutt City and Waterside-Karori they will finish on the same number of competition points as Wairarapa United, 38, and the spoils will be decided on goal difference.

With 48 goals for and 19 against Wairarapa United currently have a goal difference of 29 while Tawa with 38 goals for and 22 against have a goal difference of 16.

So for Tawa to edge out Wairarapa United under the current system they would have to win their last two games by an average of seven goals, something which, on paper at least, looks well beyond their capabilities.

Especially when it is considered that Lower Hutt City will have the incentive of needing a win themselves to have any chance of avoiding automatic relegation from premier division and that Waterside-Karori have been very little inferior to Tawa in past clashes.

So daunting is the task facing Tawa, in fact, that Capital Soccer officials were apparently prepared to hand over the premier division trophy to Wairarapa United after Saturday's match rather than have to make another trip over the hill to do so, an offer the locals politely declined because, as coach Phil Keinzley explained, they didn't want to tempt fate.

"Yes, it's a huge task for Tawa but, hey, these sort of things have been done before and we don't want to get ahead of ourselves," he said. "Hopefully we can celebrate next weekend & that's the plan anyway!"

Making victory in the premier division even sweeter for Wairarapa United, of course, is that it would also give them the chance to challenge for a place in the central league next season.

For that to happen the Capital champions have to beat the top premier division side in the central region (Manawatui-Hawkes Bay-Taranaki-Gisborne) in a home and away battle and then the bottom-placed central league side, Stop Out, again in a two-match home and away series. Keinzley has never made any secret of his desire to have Wairarapa United play in the central league but here too he is to loathe to make any comment about their prospects at that level until the Capital premier division competition is safely in the bag. "Obviously we are starting to think about it but Tawa probably have it on their minds too," he said.

Wairarapa United went to halftime in their match with Marist on Saturday trailing by one goal, a situation which had their coach concerned that the pressures of needing a good result could actually lead to defeat.

The locals had the wind in their favour and created a number of good scoring chances but a lack of composure in front of the opposition goal saw all of them wasted.

"We were hurrying things too much, we needed to be more patient," Keinzley said. "Most of the pressure we were under was self imposed & basically we were guilty of trying too hard."

Worse for Wairarapa United was that the Marist goal came because of a defensive blunder of their own making with the ball being passed in front of their goal and intercepted by an opposition player who gave 'keeper Matt Borren no chance.

Not surprisingly the message from Keinzley at halftime was for his team to focus on maintaining their structure and backing their skills to at least earn them an equaliser and they were elated when it finally came, Soromon heading home an excellent cross from Anton Ross, who not long beforehand had come off the reserve bench. It was, as said previously, Soromon's 26th goal of the season, one none more than the 25 scored for Wairarapa United by Scotsman Kevin Murray some seasons ago. From that point Wairarapa United spent most of the half on attack but a determined Marist were always dangerous whenever they had the chance to break away and Borren was called on to make a couple of fine saves in one-on-one situations.

Coach Keinzley admits to being relieved when the final whistle sounded. "It would have been nice to get a win but a draw was much better than a loss, we were happy enough to take that," he said.

Right fullback Sakeo Valevou was an outstanding performer for Wairarapa United and others to shine were Borren, Waisake Sabutu and Soromon. Keinzley though was quick to give plaudits to all his players for what should be a history-making season for the club in that they should seem likely to win the premier division title for the first time ever.

"There was a time early on when we were struggling and everybody knuckled down to getting us where we are now & it's been a huge team effort, really huge", he said.

I'm picking the Lower Hutt vs Tawa game to be at Karori Park and the Wharfies Wests game to be at Awakairangi.

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.

If Tawa want to win the league they should hit up Trotter with a match rigging offer. After throwing away 1k on Grant Hackett he is prob open to offers.

Apparently Wests are flying people in from all around the world to play for their seconds after I have been sl*gging off the fact that Wests get to play in Sundays.

Nope, they've decided to give LH one more week to drop players down b4 they play us (OK, so I don't know if they will, but it's always fun to stir people up again) . I'm kinda hoping LH's good run in CL continues so their focus stays there.

LH play Tawa this week instead, would love some help from Tawa.

Marist vs LH the week after, will it be at kilbrinie? no idea, but our 2nds got a shock by being allowed to play there on the weekend

We have thought it's been playable for a little while now....we certainly believed our game against Wairarapa could have been played there rather than being transfered to Richard Prouse (obviously with the Rimutakas closed, Weka park ended up being the best option).

But I had figured they were saving Kilbirnie for the cricket season until it had a game on it on Saturday....maybe there is hope our game against LH will be played there.

So, with LH out of the running in the CL, do we expect to see many a stronger Hutt premier league team making an appearance?

marist should not be bothered who plays for lower hutt next saturday, marist beat their first team last year and drew 1-1 in chatam cup this year in normal time.!!!!!
or will lower hutts youth put them down to capital one again like they did in 2006. it will be interesting. but i hear hutt believe capital one is probably the right level for their youth/development premier team at present?? they just do not have the quality and numbers this year!!

Wairarapa United will bolster their playing resources if they happen to earn the right to play at central league level in 2009.

For that to happen they not only have to win Capital Soccer's premier division but beat the top premier division side from the central region in a two-match home and away series and then the bottom-placed side in the 2008 central league, Stop Out, in similar fashion.

It's a huge ask in anybody's language, especially with Stop Out understood

to have registered five of the current New Zealand Olympic squad a few weeks back just in case they were

part of the promotion-relegation process.

But if Wairarapa United prove themselves equal to the challenge and coach Phil Keinzley is adamant they are they will need to ensure

that the shortage of playing numbers which often had them short of reserves this season are quickly overcome.

"We would have to have 15 players available on a regular basis, anything less would be too big a hassle," Keinzley said yesterday when reflecting on a possible central league squad.

"This season we've coped with 12 or 13, we couldn't operate along those lines any more."

Keinzley is confident every player in this year's Wairarapa United line-up will be available again in 2009 and while the Pacific Island influence has had a huge part in their current success he is "very optimistic" than any newcomers for next season would hail from within this country.

"Honestly, we've had one or two inquiries already from some very talented players here about the possibility of joining up with us should we make central league and obviously we will be following them up should that time come," he said.

That man Mick Green played a blinder today, a wonderful cross for the equalizer and cracked home a beauty for the winner close to fulltime!

Well played Wharfies, you're a much more complete team when Mal plays and you did very well to come back from 0-1 down to win.

Yeah apparently Corrales was running not looking where he was going, and ran into Sean Hennessey and fell over. After a bit of controversy Hennessey got a straight red much to Tawa's disgust and protest.  I hear it was some young referee and he was being assessed by a ref on the sidelines.  The game was being recorded by a Tawa supporter and apparently the ref making the assessment asked to see the incident again on film.  Tawa will be sending in video footage to protest the suspension i understand.  Sounds like the premier league or the NRL protesting a sending off with video footage but fair enough if it was as i understand a shocker of a decision. Yes they only dropped 2 players (though i think the keeper would be an "official" drop if he played the 2nd half of LH's match against Miramar). That said, one of them scored a hat trick in a 3-0 win. One a bicycle kick from range, the other 2 pretty class finishes. Would LH's normal strikers have finished them? We'll never know

A lot of people didn't see the incident as it happened (myself included). However the ref waved play on before stopping play to check on the injured player....only for the red card to come out after hand bags at 6 paces....

Nope, Mike Wood the president, said at the Tawa club after the match on Saturday, that they were going to send the video footage in.

On another matter i hear that Corralles was sitting on 5 yellow cards after a match played on Wednesday. I think Lower Hutt thought the suspension doesn't count until after the following match meaning he was legit to play against Tawa. Not sure what the rules are but Tawa may send in a protest. Would also be in Marist interests to enquire about the incident

i saw the incident from the sideline the tawa defender definitely shoulder charged luis from his blind spot! red was over the top thou, yellow was sufficient. and i believe it was the advice from pedro linesman who gave his version as young ref did not see it hutt were up 1-0 at that stage.
luis and easthope played and i agree hutts normal young strikers would not have taken luis chances, but hutt defended stoutly with the normal team and tawa could not break them?? so it was all not about one player although he was outstanding tawa could not catch him so turned to dirty tactics. they are better than that.
tawa a good side and will push for title next year, but shame they did act the way they did to the young ref, esp their supporters 2 in particular who were verbally abusive verbally and even tried to start a fight with some guy, with so many kids around watching was not a good sight for their club, hopefully your video footage was on mute!!!
