Bob as I stated teams need points this weekend and I think this will be the best game, to me Watereside need to win to stay in the title race, I know they 've got games in hand but the others have points on the board, UH V KCU should be good too 5- 3 I think in the first rd. the team that loses this one, drops from having a outsiders chance of winning the title to the fight to avoid that second to bottom spot and the play off game..

UHC to win in a canter.  In the first round UHC had a player sent off after 15 mins.  That will not happen this week.  And it was bloody cold out there that day.  Those of us from UH dont like the cold thats why we live in UH,  Its always a few degrees warmer out this way.   Oh and plus we have a council that mows the pitches so your not playing on a surface that is more suited to rugby.

I'll have you know the kapiti pitch is in tip top shape, probably one of the better grounds in wellington at the moment. Yours on the other hand should be interesting usually players sinking in a mud bath.

UH pitch was in pretty reasonable shape last week (at least it looked it from the sideline)

Wairarapa United coach Phil Keinzley is likening his team's Capital Soccer premier division match with Waterside-Karori tomorrow to a heavyweight boxing bout.

Not because of any belief it will turn into a slugfest but because of the ground conditions at Adventure Park in Whitby, the venue to which it has been transferred because of the state of Waterside-Karori's own pitch.

Keinzley still anticipates the game being played on a very muddy surface, however, and that being the case he sees it becoming very much a survival of the fittest.

"You very seldom get a lot of goals in games like this and those that are scored are usually poached rather than created through any impressive build up work," Keinzley said.

"The better soccer side doesn't always win, mud can be a great equaliser in that

respect. It will be like a couple of heavyweight boxers going toe to toe and seeing which one lasts the distance.".

Keinzley is mindful too of the comprehensive beating given Wairarapa United by Waterside-Karori earlier in the season and of the fact his team has not defeated them at league level in the last two years.

So while Wairarapa United is sitting second on the points table with a game in hand and Waterside-Karori are sixth he knows nothing could be taken for granted, even if ground conditions were ideal.

"Honestly, their effort against us last time was the best soccer played against us all season, it was like men playing boys," he recalled. "Defensively we couldn't contain them, they opened us up no problems at all. It was a decent wake-up call for us and hopefully we've learnt from it."

Having a full squad to pick is bonus for Keinzley although a bout of 'flu has laid the versatile Sakeo Valevou low this week and whether he will be part of the starting line-up won't be decided until match morning.

The Wairarapa United seconds continue their Capital division three programme tomorrow with a match against North Wellington. It was originally scheduled for the Pugh Sports Bowl but because of the ground conditions there it has been transferred to Carterton's Howard Booth Park, starting at 2.30pm.

looks as though the sharks will go hungry for another season of central league football. Batty fairly dominated the mid field from what I saw and there left striker think he was wearing number 19 looked very handy too.

Jesse Corey Slow on the scoresheet for the Mar. He's come on in leaps and bounds after picking up an NZFC winners medal this year.

Comments from the Bay v Mar game?

Karori score does not reflect the game. I thought the guys battled well in the conditions and were unlucky. Fiji pulled away at the end as Wharfies went down to 10 men. Real problems for next week- and 3 players suspended and four or five more not available. Im off down Centennial with a hose now.

You keep away from there my man.

Mar Vs The Warf early prdictions 15-0 to the Mar

Jesse's first touch in about 3 years was a neatly slotted goal at far post.My surprise he could run 30 meters to get to it.

Mar dominated right from the start.Sharks didn't look to interested.Good game in good spirits and the officials were actually really good.

Mar Missed a goal then the sharks early on Kevin Thompson's leg fell off again and the mighty Jason Wells of to Duniden next week after a fine performance in goal.Dylan hall playing for the Thirds next week.

Kapiti vs upper hutt was close encounter, Could have went either way with kcu claiming the victory in the final minutes after being down 1-0 at half time. Draw maybe would have been fair result. The pitch was a shocker with one corner under complete water.

With the rapa winning again now looks like they are in total control for winning the league at this stage!

I'm trying not to say anything about our match.... though Endeavour park was in good condition and Wests fielded a........strong.......team.

I'd say Tawa would still be feeling they have a reasonable chance at finishing on top, only 3 points back with a game in hand. Wairarapa do have the goal difference tie-breaker. Upsets are pretty common in the league though, and I wouldn't be surprised to see either team dropping points b4 the end of the season.

By Gary Caffell

Wairarapa United took a clear lead in Capital Soccer's premier division competition with their 5-2 victory over Waterside-Karori at Adventure Park, Whitby on Saturday.

They now sit on 28pts, two more than second-placed Island Bay United whose latest game resulted in a surprise 2-0 defeat by Miramar Rangers.

Also in Wairarapa United's favour is that they have played 13 matches to Island Bay United's 14 due to an early-season fixture against Marist, which is seventh on the points table, being postponed.

It would be wrong, however, to give the impression that Wairarapa United are home and hosed as far as the premier division title is concerned.

With five series of games still to be played third-placed Tawa, in particular, are a big danger.

Their game with Lower Hutt City on Saturday was postponed so they have currently played one less match than Wairarapa United and are on 25pts, just three points (or one win) behind.

Wairarapa United coach Phil Keinzley is also wary of teams sitting at or near the bottom of the table as they are now at the stage where relegation is staring them in the face.

"These teams are desperate for points and that always make them dangerous," he said.

"You can't take anything for granted."

Keinzley was delighted with Saturday's comfortable win over Waterside-Karori although the three-goal winning margin hid the tensions which came through Waterside-Karori levelling things up at 2-2 early in the second half after Wairarapa United had gone to the break with a 2-0 advantage.

"We talked at halftime about not letting them back into the game but obviously the message didn't sink in," Keinzley said.

"There was a bit of panic when they got their second goal but, fortunately, we managed to get back on track and win quite easily in the end."

Keinzley admits that if anyone had told him Wairarapa United would score five goals before the match he would have questioned their sanity as the boggy state of the Adventure Park pitch, especially down the middle, suggested goals would be at a premium.

"It was virtually unplayable in places, the ball just got stuck in the mud," Keinzley said. "You had to attack down the flanks, conditions weren't too bad there."

Wairarapa United opened the scoring when Seule Soromon capitalised on a good pass from Waisake Sabutu and they went 2-0 up after Miriek Tvaroh latched onto the ball about 30 metres out and rocketed it into the net.

Two goals within a five minute period early in the second half had Waterside-Karori back on level terms but some impressive lead-up work by Aaron Spierling resulted in a Paul Gregory goal to put Wairarapa United 3-2 ahead.

Soromon then scored his second goal after a melee in the penalty box and victory for Wairarapa United was sealed when Sabutu outflanked the cover defence and fired home a powerful shot from a wide angle.

The two main contenders for any player of the match award for Wairarapa United were Tvaroh and Sabutu. Tvaroh was an imposing figure in midfield where his assertive approach was valuable on attack and defence while Sabutu was equally effective at right fullback. Given the task of marking Waterside-Karori's most dangerous forward was a challenge which Andy Robertson relished while Guiseppe Cagliari and James Oxtoby both marked their 50th appearances for Wairarapa United with outstanding games.

The speed of Soromon up front always made him a threat to the opposition defences and Carl Shailer and Pita Rabo were typically industrious.

Wairarapa United plays Upper Hutt at the Pugh Sports Bowl next Sunday with Upper Hutt actually having beaten them in their last two meetings. At the time of the second of those defeats Wairarapa United was relegated to eighth on the premier division points table, a classic illustration of the improvement they have made since then.

Watched this game on Saturday, I thought the score was 2 nil at halftime and then 3 nil to Wairarapa before Wharfies got a couple back, (What Game was Phil watching?)then had a player sent off for studs up in tackle I think straight red, good game to watch, both teams played well in the conditions, not to many poor tackles. Interesting to see some Tawa players there watching as Bell Park was underwater. Phil's right on one thing there will be upsets between now and the completion of this league.

What/ Who are the stars Lower Hutt will have? Bob a couple of brave predictions this week, LH v Marist big game for both teams 6 pointer , Wairarapa by 3+ over UH, UH won 2-1 in the first rd. Tawa v IB game of the rd what condition is redwood in, give Tawa a better chance if the pitch is crap. Agree KCU over Wests and Mir v Waterside probably go for Waterside they played pretty well against Wairarapa last week.

i predict lower hutt will "lower" a few of there first team members to help keep 2nd team survival chances, wests dont have that luxury this week with both 1sts and 2nds playing on sat. redwood is in horrible condition so if your turning up to tawa dont expect anything pretty, island bay or tawa will win by a crap own goal or something - mark my words. rapa at home v upper, bold but hutt cant play away from harcourt. and i just chose miramar so karori can continue recent form and start advertising for a new coach.

Bob, why do you think that both Lower Hutt and Wests are as concerned about their 2nds dropping to Capital 1? Has either their coaches or committies given you this information or is it just a fantansy you have in your head? You seem to be going on about it every week.

i have spoken to people at wests and they agree, concentrate on chatham cup and keeping the 2nd team in cap premier, i dont say these things lightly - maybe you can talk from lower hutts view but wests defiently want to keep there 2nd team in cap prem and there doing nothing wrong im just predicting the results mate

As far as Wests go, I can't attest to what they would do if their 1sts and 2nds are playing at the same time, but with their 1sts getting a cancellation last week on Saturday they certainly found a way to pack their 2nd team on the Sunday.

I'm guessing they want to keep their 2nds in Prem's as they see it as a feeder for their 1st team and want to keep them playing at as high a level as possible
