Birkenhead United having a good moan over on Twitter.

Profile pic. Should you be interested. Lakhsen, on the right, lost touch with him.
Mohammed, on the left, I'm still in touch with. He's now living in Agadez, Niger. More focused on his animals now as tourism has dried up. Is active with a co-op promoting local goods, leather work and bijouterie, into Europe.

Twitter is not really the place for Clubs to be having a rant to Federation or NZF about a decision.

and it really is a rant as well.

I'm genuinely surprised that they (or their Twitterer at least) is complaining. They must be new to football or something....

Suggest you read the posts and you'll find they have accepted the ruling but well within rights to ask Federation & NZFootball for reasoning behind the call and if the claim is going to be made that "fairest decision" made to ask exactly what constitutes 'fairness' in their minds.

Given that 100+ Birkenhead supporters braved atrocious conditions down at Taharoto to see 50 minutes of football amount to nothing, I would think they are at least owed a considered explanation.

Would think that healthy debate good for game...

Fucking how hypocritical of you dairyflat. You moan about everything under the fucking sun on here, injustices in Palestine or some other Arab shithole. Facebook, Twitter, forums etc. are gonna be used for venting and ranting, just like you do all the time. I'd tell you pretty much 90% of the club (probably more) feel pretty aggrieved at the outcome. Are we not allowed to or something? Yeah we have to get on with it and will do, but pretty sure we're allowed to get these feelings off our chest in the mean time. Freedom of speech and all that.

Three for me, and two for them.

Great point that JV makes too. A dirty * like Cory Hitchen could have chopped someone and broken their leg yesterday (he did his best effort to tbh) and got sent yet could play in the replay while the injured player misses out.

Reason 1: it would be stupid.

Do you have to start with the same 11 that was playing when the game was called off? Do they all have to run at a steady jog for 55 minutes before the game kicks off? I mean, where does it stop. Do you only play the remaining 35 minutes, or do you give the team that was behind 90 minutes to have a crack at getting up?

There are just too many variables to make that sensible.

A game being abandoned means that the conditions were so outrageous that the game was a farce. So it gets called off. If it is mostly finished, you say "hey, close enough" and call a result. If it isn't mostly finished you start again.

It's the most fair option.

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.

That's probably a little too simplistic of a view...

My understanding is that game was halted by ref as conditions had deteriorated to the point where he believed that risk of injury to players was too great to continue.

Conditions at start of game were ok. Weather deteriorated at very end of 1st half and over halftime. Could game have continued ? Open to debate...possibly for a little longer but risk to players was only going to get higher.

FYI - 2012 1/4 Final @ Shepherds Park vs Lower Hutt saw very similar amount of rainfall and in my opinion pitch was less playable than Taharoto yesterday (large amounts of surface water), and yet game played through to conclusion.

I've played in worse conditions than were at the Birkenhead game. It was awful conditions, but not sure I would've deemed it unplayable to be honest. Meh, up to the ref though.

I am not surprised at the complaint, just the forum that they have decided to make it in. Write a letter, send a fax, write an email ... but Twitter?

NZ Football and both AFF and NFF Federations active on Twitter - as are many Auckland Clubs - good forum for open discussion that can involve fans too...works towards better transparancy.

Hardly a complaint .. more like a couple of pointed questions and a bit of frustration at the outcome (understandably so).

I was very suprised it was call off and don't really know why the Ref called it other than the fact he must have been cold. The centre circle was boggy and puddling up a bit but the rest of the pitch was completely fine and Birkenhead were having absolutely no trouble pinging the ball around and Glenfield were chasing shadows...

I've seen games in far worse conditions continue. What are they going to do if it rains all week and this weekend as well with the 4th round only 13 days away!

I think Birkenhead have every right to feel agreived I mean talking to their fans I think it was more a fact that NZ football blatatly didn't take the score or time in the game into account when making their decision and the fact that the match could have easily been completed like they stated more so than the match having to be a full replay.

After watching yesterday though you could play that game anywhere and I don't think Glenfield will get near Birko anyhow

Three Waikato sides make it through to the last 16 for the first time ever, and then all of them end up with draws which will make them likely underdogs, and all away from home!

Guess it's going to be an Auckland road trip for me then.

cards stand in an abandoned game - ask one of the three kings players who was yellowed in the washed out game against Bay Olympic.

Forcing a few games to be postponed and some clubs already out of Cup to go upto a month without game!!

Why cant it just be played midweek? You'd probably get just as good a crowd as a Saturday night

Same with Glenfield v Birko why cant it be played up at NHS midweek

NZF told us they prefer it this coming weekend - suits us.
Also we are not playing Saturday night to attract a crowd - 7pm Saturday causes the least disruption to an already packed schedule on the turf for this coming weekend.  Also midweek would force a number of the club's teams to cancel training which isn't our preferred solution.

Central Utd (For your game which wont bother you im sure!!) and East Coast Bays affected by Glenfield Rovers v Birkenhead Utd game.
They wouldnt let you play Saturday night 1st time around but happy about it this time?
Or was that AFF decision for 1st game?
Why do you play Saturday nights in NPL?

sooooo Central played last week, they missed the weekend just gone (not our fault) they will miss this weekend (because of us apparently) and they will miss next weekend (which is no-one's fault but theirs), pretty sure they are playing the week after that so that's three rounds,  not sure where the month comment comes from.  (ECB played this weekend so that's even shorter).  If you have a problem with that talk to NZF about having two dedicated cup windows in June.

In regards to the night game we were not aware we were allowed to play our cup games at night until recently hence the Central and Waitakere games being scheduled during the day - maybe AFF didn't want us to play night games those first two times - who knows.

there is a number of reasons we play at night in the NRFLP -

- it allows our members access to our first team games

- it allows more of our other club teams to play on the turf in the traditional 1pm/3pm slots

- unlike Friday night fixtures it allows us to keep our first and reserves teams playing back to back.

- it allows committee members/volunteers to help out at the game when they normally couldn't due to their teams playing at the same time.

Let me ask you a question - are you against the Saturday night concept?  if so why?

Permalink Permalink
almost 13 years ago · edited almost 13 years ago · History

Didnt say it was because of you just dont see why games couldnt be played midweek, And ECB played Saturday but wont play till July 6th which is 3 weeks.

And Central last played June 9th and arent due to play until July 7th so thats pretty close to a month by my maths

Didnt you say in a previous post that you were told games could only be played an hour either side of 2pm when  commenting on a game in Wellington?

Im not against Saturday games at all quite the opposite actually! Just that you said you are not playing Saturday night to increase support which I find strange considering the importance of the game and the effort you put into the previous game in the cup??

So was wondering why you play league games Saturday night if not for extra support thats all

I actually like Friday/Saturday night games and would like to see more midweek for football but I guess there just isnt the culture for the game in NZ to support it like there is in other countries
