I'd be fascinated to know the basis of NCR's appeal too. Were they just fishing? Or did they in fact have a better (or more honest) understanding of the rules than Wairarapa? If so, hard to have any sympathy with Wairarapa.

NCR are a very well run club. I wouldn't put it past them to have known exactly what rules were violated.

As for Wairarapa, if you don't provide all the info then because NZF granted it based on what you did say, you assume that will be the end of it, you deserve everything you get.

Fuck this stupid game

And this argument from Keinzley is not going to achieve anything.

"I can't see where we did anything wrong and that's what the appeal will be based around. We simply don't think we have a case to answer."

Wairarapa United will be making the point in their appeal that Kalteck only played the last seven or eight minutes of the Napier match, being introduced off the bench more because of Keinzley's desire to get some idea of his readiness for future games rather than to strengthen the effort in that particular match.

"We didn't need to play him," Keinzley said. "Surely it's obvious that if we thought there were any doubts over his eligibility we wouldn't have put him on. "We were in front and there were only a few minutes to play. Why the hell would you take any risks?"

Kind of like saying "Yeah I drunk drove but I didn't need to drink drive, I just wanted to see how well I could handle being a little bit drunk behind the wheel, so can I have my licence back?". Still broke the rules mate.

Aaron Speirling and Carl Shailer. Both played in Napiers game, with Aaron scoring the winning goal.
That's it, apart from a couple of young players who get a run every now and then

So if NZF have given him approval to play, and Napier have the right to protest, to which they did and won after more investigation, would it not be put right by replaying the game? That way Wairarapa don't miss out, and neither do Napier, from a certain mistake by NZF?

To be fair though some of the guys (Seuele, Mirek etc) have lived in the Wairarapa for 5+ years.

You are missing the point. The competition has rules. If you do not abide by them (and the onus is on the club to provide the correct information, not NZF to disprove it) then you get dumped.

Move on.

If all the information provided to NZF was true and correct for them to give him the clearance, then how is this breaking the rules?  It's not like, when the application for reclassification got filed, it had "is the player currently residing in NZ?"

Is this not the same issue NZF is having with Durante?

That might be all well in good if all information was given to NZF. It wasn't. Wairarapa either mistakenly, or purposely, gave NZF wrong information. Either way, it's Rapa's fault.

Well I suppose at the end of the day, that's what the lawyers and NZF will work out. No need for speculation now. I think we will all be interested in the outcome

Permalink Permalink

And anyway, I'm pretty sure there is no option to have a replay under the rules.

Permalink Permalink

Why not? If NZF have made the mistake, but Napier's protest is correct, what does Wairarapa do about it? If they have followed all the rules that NZF have asked of them, and NZF have cleared it, then Napier miss out.  And that's unfair if the mistake is actually out of both clubs hands. So replay seems the only way to go.

Permalink Permalink

Because the regs say a replay is only available when a game is abandoned.  http://www.nzfootball.co.nz/fileadmin/user_upload/Documents/Rules_And_Regs/Regulation_12_FINAL.pdf

I think it's pretty clear that NZF made a decision based on the information provided to them. It is the responsibility of whoever provided it to ensure it is correct. And that looks like Wairarapa.

For me, the interesting question is whether Wairarapa deliberately withheld information or whether it was a genuine mistake

Permalink Permalink

Ok. I understand that rule in regards to the replay.

What I don't get is the reason behind NZF granting the reclassification in the first place. There must be some certain criteria that they follow. I would think it is no different from when normal clubs request a clearance of a player. You fill out all the information of the certain player and all the info comes back on that certain player. Because Brian played overseas without an International transfer is the fault of the club he played for over there. Why should that be on Wairarapa shoulders if they have provided all the relevant information about the player, and he's been cleared by NZF.

Again, all speculation and no true facts. I know a lot of people don't agree with Phil's recruiting methods and I know a lot of people that do, but we all agree that PK is not that stupid to play a player that has even the slightest chance of causing a protest and the possible loss of a game that was vitally important. He just wouldn't do that.

Just checked the draw on NZF's article published on their website today -
Maybe 'Rapa's appeal is not the only one as I see the tie between Caversham and Dunedin Tech is yet to be decided?

What's sight without sound? Love without peace? Copulation without conception?

You are just speculating yourself about the process. Wairarapa's request to NZF must have been on the basis he had lived here continuously for 12 months. They know full well he didn't.

This is quite a silly point.  Junior clubs aren't supposed to produce players for senior clubs, because there is college football in the middle of the key development age.  Few Wellington clubs would be able to say they have a team full of club juniors but no-one bats an eye lid or asks questions about so called imports.

You are right to some degree.  But when the induction of Wairarapa united happened, it was a composite of all clubs involved, with a combination of mainly Carterton and Masterton Central league players.  Slowly, the "local" players got weeded out, and now it's predominantly import players.  It started with one or two "imports" and now we are at the stage of one or two "local players". Now Wairarapa united have an academy to try and bridge the gap between "junior" and "college" and integrate these players with structure to be able to replace the imports with local players.  Now we all agree that Wairarapa united would not be in the position they are without the imports, so hopefully the academy does this for the benefit of the local players.

Really?  Of course the aim of junior clubs is to see their players progress through to Senior ranks and yes the whole college thing does have an impact as does University, work, OE's etc etc, and correct that no clubs ranks are full with their own Juniors, but it would be fair to suggest that historically,  clubs that do not have a solid core of local players often struggle over the long term to remain viable.

My club doesn't invest plenty of time, effort and money for our juniors not to go through to seniors and beyond.

Yeah that was a perplexing thing to say JD - of course clubs should be trying to develop players to stay with the club long term. College football presents a challenge to that in some parts of the country more than others, but that doesn't mean it's not one of the goals for club.

Which to me makes enterprises like Wairarapa United a bit weird. I like Phil and I think he's done a bloody good job over there. There aren't many Central League quality young players in the Wairarapa but Wairarapa United provides a vehicle for the few to play at the top winter level.

To give you a sense of scale, there are about as many registered players in the 'Rapa as there are at one of the big Wellington clubs.

And listening to the podcast - I think stupidity is exactly what got him into this.
Also Smith - I'm pretty sure Brizza ain't been here in the past year. If he was then it would have been a very brief visit.
Also the reg never states you can't leave the country contrary to what PK was saying - it merely states the player resides in NZ

Yeah, this one great big yarn by them. It just took me all of about 5 mins and a Google search on 'Brian Kaltak' to establish that he must have spent considerable time overseas in the last 12 months. Ironically his Wikipedia page even claims he is still a Solomons Warriors player currently!

This link establishes that he not only played for but captained Erakor Golden Star to second place in the Port Vila Football TVL Premier League between September and December 2012: http://www.vanuafoot.vu/News/ViewArticle/tabid/1354/Article/b073a024-8412-43c2-bf31-b0e49dfd2371/language/en-US/Default.aspx

This link (amongst others) confirms that he then played for the Solomons Warriors during the 2013 O-League: http://www.dailypost.vu/content/brian-kaltak-signs-warriors-shocks-hekari

Did Wairarapa really not know any of this? And did they really not know that his absence made him ineligible to be reclassified?

Waimak United beat Nelson College 2-1 in Nelson today. 0-0 at half time although Waimak created more opportunities. They scored twice in the first 15 minutes of the second half and also had a goal disallowed before College can back and scored with 10 minutes to go. College made most of the play until full time but could not score. On reflection a fair result

Had a slightly depressing roadtrip to watch Birko v Wanderers, quite a good game, Birko went ahead early through one of those awful free-kicks where the keeper waits for a touch but none comes... bottom right corner. 1-0 at halftime before HW came roaring back, dominating the second half and drawing level with a great solo goal from Mark Jones.

Then, in the space of three minutes, two defensive errors saw Birko grab two goals, and then Jones got sent off for his normal aggro moment, and through Birko go. Michael Built played really well up front for Wanderers but they really missed Singh through injury, his pace just gives them a different element to their game.

Surprisingly, Melville are the Waikato team who progressed, hopefully they have a last 8 game within driving distance, maybe they can draw Waimak or PNM or the likes.

I don't think it'd be too far of a stretch for me to say Birko are the best side left, this game was really a battle between two of the best sides remaining, Birko take that mantel now.
