Yer what? Duran Duran knows Ash's dad quite well ....... is actual evidence? Well done PC Plod! Move on ....

Hmm I'd be thinking someone's brother would know if the other had been approached to move to Coastal and the money being put on the table.

I do know that a certain player [not my brother though] has been on the CS coach shopping list with a fat or maybe skinny cheque book for the last 12 months since he came to Chch.

As the new coach for his 2017 team was also very keen to get him signed for 2018, must have got out a call was made to player a few weeks ago from the same CS person or sponsor.

I can't say if $$ on the table for 2018 but with sign on fee, win, bonus and game payments for 2017.

Couldn't see the point in Coastal going after the player for 2018 without putting the same as 2017 on the table.

Juan Chang now getting offered money to play MPL, what's happened to these leagues!!

Well this fact come from his mum :)

On Changs offer - all good goalscorers command lotsa money so why should he be any different?

I also know what Cashmere did for Ash financially is far more then just a flight.

But I've heard of petrol vouchers and free boots happening for years. No difference.

Even Seth Clarke to Selwyn is a paid agreement. It's just all the bad players that don't know about it? Happens everywhere all over the world. Without question. One way or another.

Yes, however petrol vouchers and boots dont add up to $200 plus a game which is been thrown around all over town at the moment. Thats just not MPL either. In my opinion there is no-one worth that amount of money, and to think these players are asking for said amounts is crazy. Wouldn't be able to tie the shoelaces of players in the old southern league earning around $30 a win

Any update from the MPL / CCL league format meeting held earlier tonight?

After two rounds top 5 MPL into South Island League, bottom 3 carry on between themselves to decide which one ends up relegated. CCL stays as is with Western taking up the 6th spot for ‘18. Winner to play off with team from up north (if there is one) to decide which to be promoted into MPL 2019. The last bit will also depend on their C and CY license status as will be required for MPL in 2019. No more ‘working towards’.

So do the bottom 3 play on the Satdy with a bye, or Tuesdays as per someone else's comment?

Correct - Saturday game and bye, then one on Tuesday (but not if Nelson in the bottom 3). Likely 3 rounds (but 2 if Nelson in the bottom 3). As well the 3 teams take all points gained from the 1st 2 rounds with them.

So they carry through all points scored against all teams, or all points scored against the bottom 3?

Yes but in the Southern League days all teams got a good write up in the Saturday night paper and photos from more than one game.  That was worth the low payment plus 30cents got you a gallon of gas so $30 took you a long way.

On the other re $$s to play. I see some think Chang is being wanted by Coastal. Hmm as far as I know the player that EQ is chasing has won the odd minor comps I don't think Chang has won anything yet.

The third point is that the player is not asking for payment but Coastal are happy to prodigalize the $$ to get him.

Playing midfield in 2018 is the top pick at the moment but in what colours, Red seems a very strong link or maybe a shade of blue that hasn't seen the light of senior football for a year or two.

I follow the northern leagues a bit and the money paid to players up there is 4x the amounts here. I think if people are stupid enough to put money into the game in that way is still good for the game. Attracts better players to the league which is what id personally like to see

Having faced many of CCL strikers the last couple of season's the one that would be worth spending money on would be Dan... Luckily for Selwyn they already have him.

Chang never really stood out in the 3 games I faced him last season, the were much better Chch Utd players

Hey I quit playing at that or any level when I was 25 due to poverty (couldn't afford to drink, smoke and play :)) I may have "forgotten" to pay subs but certainly was completely unaware of players being paid outside of National League teams .... or is that the alzheimers kicking in .......

For our players that's a huge saving compared to previous subs plus FTC fees and they have reduced travel costs as well. Added to that the subs can be discounted with some volunteer work for the club. It's a win/win don't you think Nathan.

if you didn't do FTC because you couldn't afford it

Yet your playing level is meaning selection in Waimak top team

Who pays the Waimak sub?

Or do you just not pick poor people and save the drama

"After a transperant and rigorous trial process we are pleased to announce our Prem Squad. These were the 16 families who could pay the subs in full".

Any club worth their salt will have a way to assist those that can’t afford it. Volunteering and having reduced subs makes sense. So is scorching goal fund, and so is a club’s hardship fund, often supported by (anonymous) generous individuals.

Yes $850+ a year is a lot of money. Break it down though and with the 70 contacts + 20 games then it works out at less than $10 a contact. Coming from a traditional model of say $150 a year subs for 15 games and 1 or 2 trainings each week, it is a big step up in $. However for the $150 you were probably 90% likely to get a group of kids together playing for fun and helped by a parent. Now you get highly qualified coaches and kids who are driving to be better. That raises the bar of all training. The kids who do this will probably be having fun too as they want to do it.

Not begrudging the parent helpers (I am one), but the coaches who have level 2, 3, A or B or whatever are shed loads better than me and kids would learn lots more too. Compare costs to other trainings or lessons. Swimming lessons cost about 12-15 per lesson, music lessons cost at least this if not more. If you need help with school work then tutors cost heaps. But people probably wouldn't baulk too much at those costs. If you saw your child had a passion and talent for something, then it will be something you would generally bend over backwards to involve them in.

No club is going to turn away an Adriano because he was from a slum favela. You would work with the family to see how they can be included.

Whether my 2 girls ever reach the stage to be involved with someone like this, and they have an equivalent for girls, then I would encourage them for as long as they want to do it. It will be better than them being stuck on a phone or tablet or messing round at the malls all day

Factor in less costs, time, stress etc for travel for outlying areas into English Park for this, and surely it is a win for the kids and families overall.

Damn straight that's a lot of money and the parents who live in the slum favela my club works in are not going to put their hands up for financial assistance regardless of the amount. They're gonna drive straight past and sign lil Adriano up for rugby league or rugby. Or nothing. Welcome to the world of rich elite sport. That was never the intention for football, in fact quite the opposite. I am disgusted that kids are being removed from the beautiful game through this "licensed" club approach. What a load of nonsense. Complete madness.

I'm not bagging Waimak (or whoever) for their sub structure.

There is a lot of positive stuff in there

But yeah as Wayne subtly suggests it's really hard work in other locations.

yes , very sad . He was one of life’s good guys, he was selector along with Steve Woodin and Fred when I coached the Canterbury provincial team for 2 years , he was always positive about football with great knowledge for a Middlesbrough supporter

Sad day for Rangers , Coastal Spirit and Canterbury football

For some of the players, for sure Gordon, but usually 2-3 at most make FTC at 13th/14th Grade from what I've observed and are required to pay the $500-600 depending on how many terms you do, but it will now be expected for all 16 players.

My 13 yr old plays for Nomads, so that amount isn't an issue for me personally, Nomads have indicated it won't be anything like $865 in the brief conversation I've had with them in the last week, but noted it will be substantially more than 2017 subs due to the 'Academy' requirement.

My 10 yr old at Waimak will be coached by the same guys as last year with the same number of trainings but cost has gone up by around $200.

I realise this is the way MF have deemed necessary but there will be plenty of parents who will struggle to pay surely and yes I take your point re volunteering and I'm sure there will be weekly auto-payment options etc.

Will be fascinating to see what happens.

I note Waimak havent put it up on their FB page yet...(unless I've missed it)

Sad news coming out of the recent passing of Eileen Langridge QSM - Eileen was a tireless worker for football in the region and the South Island and spent countless years of service on the former Canterbury Football Association and admin duties for Canterbury United when the Dragon's were first established.

Also a life member CFA, NZFA as well at both the Western AFC and Christchurch Technical clubs and served as president of the Mainland Football Federation for 5 years. RIP Eileen

Aged 96 and still very active in her final years.

I used to see Eileen twenty years ago when she was at the Canterbury Football Association and it's amazing to think that she was already 76 years old then.

An amazing and enthusiastic lady, always positive about things and with a mind sharper than most people in their twenties.

She remembered seeing her local West Ham play in the 1920's as a girl in London and remembered all the personalities in NZ football going back to the 1950's.

A real "people person", she took the time to chat to anyone and made you feel welcome.

One of the most legendary NZ football administrators of all time.

Eileen was working 30 hour weeks as administrator at Woolston / Cashmere Technical in her 90's.

Most of her administrative work over the years was unpaid.
