Also unsure if been uploaded yet but Mainland arranged for the Women's Final to be filmed by the same person that does the Canty United games so no commentary but at least you can see or relive the final. Vim will be happy. Also for Vim some of the trees were chopped down on the bank.

Officially the trees were "trimmed", not cut down :)

Agreed Foal, the Pride are well underway with planning and training and should go up a notch or two this time round. Also the Dragons, there were a couple of lads down from Auckland having a look on Saturday, hopefully they were impressed and Martin Gay from the board gave CU a good plug during the Chatham Cup presentations.

Big congrats guys. I know we've engaged in some serious sledging over the years, but seriously thrilled (if a little jealous) for Canterbury football.

Sledging, what sledging? :)
Thanks chap, and good luck to Southern United in the ASB this year.

Soooo - when do we find out what teams will be in what division for 2014 (Div 1 I really care about) or will that be next season now?

Permalink Permalink

News is that Parklands are up & FC2011 Bombers are down, mainly because FC2011 can't have 2 teams in div 1, heard a rumour that Hornby were thinking of dropping down

Now that the hang overs are better or should be getting less foggy.

Did Andy P throw any trophies off balconies this year?

Well done to Coastal a top effort and full marks for letting the Aucks score and beat themselves. What a way to go gave your girls/ladies no time to think about having to hang on to a slender lead. Now we won't have to read or hear about Nomads being the last team to win it in every article, was making me feel old.

To CashmereTech congratulations what can be mentioned that hasn't already been in print etc. It's good for all of Canterbury and the SI football to see the Chatham Cup come south.

Thanks CTV showing the big boys up, good job well done by Irving and Glen Collins and to George [Corporate Consumables] for sponsoring the coverage of the game, nice to see some of the money we spend on office supplies gets put back into our sport.

To Radiosport on taking the time to send Piney down to do the live radio broadcast along with Stroudie taking time away from pulling pints.

I must say that Tony Smith gave the Football fan something to be proud of before and after the weekend with the number of column inches Ok cms he got to print. Thanks to him and The Press,  can we please keep that sort of exposure going the full year.

Mainland Football for putting on the day.

One last thing. These results show we NEED a SI league for both male and female senior teams, mirror each other so that teams [would not need to be but better if same club] can get together and play double headers in the same city. More chance of media coverage and sponsorship.

So will we wait again for another ten years or more for Si league or do it while the buzz is still there.

Dunedin Tech and Cavy want a SI league.

Up to Cashmere Tech [as the beat in the south] to put maximum pressure on the rest of the MPl and top SPL clubs to get involved so we can all have a better comp. Soccersouth are changing to 8 team SPL league nest year, what better time than 2014 for a full SI league.

Not sure about your comment re "these results show we NEED a SI league for both male and female senior teams" Scottie, in fact I think the results show the opposite i.e. both teams won without participating in a south island league.

Not that I am opposed, quite the opposite and am aware of several clubs in support of the concept in ChCh. An 8 team league in Dunners will certainly help, maybe we will see top 4 after 2 rounds in each federations league play home and away in a South Island one round championship in 2015? With first playing 2nd for the overall title alternating each year between ChCh and Dunedin? Would give clubs 21 games with the level ramping up through the 2nd half of the season. Perfect preparation for the Chatham Cup and ASB Premiership.

Would love a 4/4 split South Island league for men, over 3 rounds ideally as a genuine league season, but if not then a one round end of season thing would fit the bill.
Not sure about a women's league though. If it were, it would have to be a 6/2 Mainland/FS split because of the vast differences in quality. Then that gets very expensive for the 2 Dunedin sides.

What changes in coaching / managers can we expect in 2014, if any.

Understand that there will be no change at Halswell or Western and one would assume Cashmere Tech will be the same and likewise at Suburbs and Coastal.?

Mick B at Bays still undecided but am sure will be involved in some form, so that leaves Nomads.

Robbie B to stay in charge at University?

A few players retired or moving on - Andy Pits and Jamies Smith and Cashmere Technical with Ewan Bakker moving south to Dunedin.  .

not sure having the FDO doubling up as first team coach is a long term plan. Be an interesting disscussion for the club to have.

Heard Bays were talking to Danny Halligan. Coastal looking for a coach and a striker with Ash Welbourn off to Wellywood. No noise from Nomads who need to do something to get out of the relegation zone next season.

Danny Halligan far more suited to a young development team, not older established team. So I think Danny may have better options than bays. And he has coached at nomads before. Of course he's on a good wicket so may like to stay where he is.

Paul Bateson? Interesting that he's allowed to play for the club but not allowed to coach under Mainlands rules. On the other hand many Football Development Managers at clubs such as Fred Simpson at Cashmere and Gareth Turnbull at Coastal are encouraged to coach at Mainland level. One way street?

Nomads looking for a new coach Andy Bull not doing MPL next season. Dean Hutchinson had a part in the team this year so expect he will take over or be offered the job. Main goal for the season was to stay up and build from there to get back to the top. Players have already stated they will be back earlier from overseas varsities for 2014. I hear a couple of lads [from Div 1 teams] have approached the club about next season MPL spots.
Youth teams looking at Auckland City U17s [Nomads 15s] and Tsunami [Nomads U17s] 15s also have Nike t/m plus trips to Australian and US tournaments in the planning, a busy time in the next year or so for these lads. Nomads have been to US tournaments before with the senior ladies team back in the 90s.
Can't understand how Gavin Jeffs didn't get POY for the Nomads first team he played striker, centre mid and centre back and a few others as req'd to fill gaps and still performed week in week out.

What about DT? Wasn't he assistant coach this year? If Gavin Jeff's got player of the year, no disrespect given his marvellous service to a number of clubs over the years, then that really highlights the issues Nomads have at this level. The challenge for them will be to stay up until the good young players come through without losing them to bigger more organised clubs.

Never said he did, that's what the "if" was for. My point was if he had got it it highlights some of the issues they have going forward. They're not alone in this of course, look what has happened at the once mighty rams for example.

The mighty rams are looking for a div1 coach. Who would want to get their hands dirty for that job? Will utd ever return to mpl? I dont think they will for a while. A merge would be the best bet for them possibly?

Probably, but who with? Geographically they are surrounded by large clubs, none of whom would probably be interested. Plus what would they bring to a merger apart from housie one night a week and debt from the good old national league days?

Debt has all be cleared. A great credit to Derek Johnston who stayed on the United Board to see the debt cleared, only stood down last season.

I believe they did well out of selling their club rooms at Spreydon Domain, may even have a couple of units that give them a good income.

Back from my football travels around the country and ready to get back into stirring gossip in the Premier League.

Saw the Uni boys from Div 1 down at the FIFA Timaru tournament, which they won. Their team was called the Ineligible Players in regards to their situation from this year which I thought was quite funny.  They also commented that they had now won 4 trophies this season, matching Tech, which is just as funny.

I take it CHCH Utd didn't appeal the ruling on who won Div 1?

Oh and I am so glad they cut down the trees at English Park, will be able to see the whole pitch now hopefully.

That is indeed a credit to Mo. And they already have a junior club that initially linked with Cashmere but that is now a thing of the past . Recent rumours had them linking with Parklands but that went nowhere, hard to see how that would have worked, even harder now to see how they are going to bounce back with 2 large progressive clubs in Cashmere and Halswell right on their doorstep.

Yes DT was stated as assistant coach but Hutchie did most of the work at trainings.
That Will got 1st team POY just underlines my comment playing one good game and two average games.
Daniel Burns got overall club player of the year, he was one of several players that missed parts of the season for one reason or another.
The best young players at Nomads are at least 3 to 4 years away from being in contention for PDL let alone MPL. May get one or two push on a get stronger on the ball and learn to pass quicker as the opposition they come up against gets better week after week.
Nomads has two or three players at U17 this year who maybe of PDL level bench warmers for next season, depends on if they want to put in the hard work to be part of a senior team. Again they need to be given the chance to show if they can and that's not always been the case. Young players these days just expect to walk in to a team without working to push other players out.

Overall I would say the 15th grade are a lot better standard than the 17th grade..... The main issue at 15's is their age and physicality.... many of the squad are old enough to play 15's again next season despite winning div 1 this year.....
The Tsunami tournament will hopefully be a big help for some of the 17's and older 15's if they make the squad
