Tauranga City won final 3 - 1 over Birkenhead

That brings to an end a decade of domination by Birkenhead that will probably never be matched.

4x winners, 8x finalists, 10x semi finalists. 1 group stage defeat in the 2010s (0-1 v Hamilton; 2013). A truly superb effort.

Three for me, and two for them.

domination entails winning so probably stick with just the four years

So twice as many wins as any other club across a decade long period then.

Unprecedented.

Three for me, and two for them.

By my reckoning that is 22 years

Invitations for this year have just been sent out.

May pay to check that your Club has received their invite.  By the looks of the bounced emails there have been a few changes

I think Coastal binned their labour weekend tournie today. Will Napier happen?

I think Coastal binned their labour weekend tournie today. Will Napier happen?

It was interesting reading Coastal reasoning "At Level 2 restrictions, the player participants alone would exceed our ability to limit gatherings to up to 100 people even by separating Linfield Park into zones and it would be impossible to restrict people from having contact between zones." and then reading the level 2 fine-print.

I think a tournament is feasible if you split into groups of 4 with each team allowed at most 23-25 players, coaches, physios etc, thus giving your gathering of 100 for the day.  2 groups of 4 share the same 2 fields over the course of the day alternating which group is playing on the fields at a given time.  ie group A plays a game on fields 1,2 , then group B plays a game on fields1,2 repeat two more times.  Group C,D on fields 3,4 Group E,F on fields 5,6 etc .   Each group has their own space for tents, portaloos, warm up , and access to road or parking.   Referees stay with a group for a day. (interestingly referees and officials not included in 100 person limit according to fineprint)

Redraw for day 2 , top 2 from each group in one half of the draw, bottom 2 in the other half.

Day 3 Semi and final, again 4 teams forming the gathering of 100 for the day.

Easier to administer if you are able to move complete groups of 4 off to other clubs fields rather than all at the one complex.  Otherwise a lot of pig-tail sticks and white tape.

I don't think playing in groups of 6 you can get around the 100 limit gathering rule.

Easier to cancel
Taking the fun out of it for players and supporters just to make it happen is pointless (not that you could make it happen based on the above)
They need to make the call asap if they haven’t

Reports are the Napier tournament will be cancelled this year very shortly.
23 Sep 20:01
Seems that someone out there has more information than I do.  All participating clubs have been informed of our thoughts at this stage.  Some Auckland clubs have asked to withdraw.  We are getting other clubs asking to come in and take their place.  The above information regarding the "100 for the day" is incorrect.

Sorry, bit abrupt in the last post.
From NZF guide to Covid Level 2
"Where a number of pitches are in one large open area, multiple gatherings can take place as long as each does not exceed 100 people and remains independent, physically distant, and avoids mingling or interacting
with each other"

We intend to have 11 pitches in action, so do the maths.
We are also working closely with Kevin Murphy, the Events Manager for Napier City Council.   I acknowledge that things may be a bit complicated but we would like to give it a go - as someone commented above it would be easier to cancel the event but I've never been one to throw my hands in the air and surrender.  If it gets too complicated we may have another outcome but at the moment, it is possible and we have a hell of a lot of people that want to come.  We will be making a call on 5 October after the Government's latest edict.  All participating clubs are aware of this.

I don't understand how you can run a tournament with 'independent' fields... don't get me wrong - I would love for there to be tournaments at this time of year, but I don't see how they can actually run something like this?

Hey Reportsare - why don't you come and run the Club - as the Chairman, I obviously don't know what is going on so your assistance will be greatly appreciated.
As I have previously posted, we will be making a decision on 5 October so I guess you have a dollar each way on being right.

I don't want to steal anyone's thunder but Auckland teams are confirmed to be out of the 2021 edition.

As a club who has stressed out about this event I have to say the comms from NCR have been awesome and they have made sensible calls all the way through.  Best of luck with your tournament and we can't wait to be back in 2022.

all teams have been given the chance to pull out over the last couple of months and retain their spots for 2022.

Good to see that I haven't lost my touch in getting people wound up - I thought I was being polite - I didn't write what I was really thinking.
The Tournament is still on, although without the Auckland teams, in a slightly altered format.  All teams have been offered the opportunity to withdraw and those who have withdrawn have been guaranteed their place in next years' tournament and money refunded without penalty.  We now await what is happening in the Waikato as this may affect their entries.   The draw will be sent out next week when hopefully the picture becomes clearer.
Chris McIvor has worked closely with the Events Manager from Napier City Council and they believe that we can put on a safe and worthwhile tournament.  We have also borrowed some of the methods Hawkes Bay Rugby use to run their home matches.
All in all, it will not be the traditional Napier tournament but it will be a tournament that hopefully the players and Clubs will enjoy participating in.

nice. Do those that go and would have been in the main group retain their position regardless of results?
