Just noticed on capital footballs site the news that 6 wellington girls made it into the NZ  U20 squad.

but non of them play football here any more and have moved to auckland ect.

it looks like only one girl is from out of auckland or overseas.

so how can women's football in the other areas stay at a high level like central league if the good youth have to leave to get national honours??

the girl from coastal spirit is probably a stand out player to be noticed so i hope she and our six do well but i do think the system needs looking at or football for woman might suffer…..

good sportsmanship and fair playing field is all we ask for

but all we get is talk and goal posts moving

Interesting FHM match report (where Briar, Rollo and CJ play) with comments on the Glenfield coach

As the half continued, the vocal styling of the Glenfield coach (who was loudly in the ear of the officials, on his own players, and targeting FHM players as well), was rewarded with a stern warning from the referee. Most football players and fans can understand a coach instructing players during the match, however the Glenfield coach shouting things at FHM players like “with a touch like that you won’t be going to Brazil” (referring to the upcoming selection for the U20 national team trip that several FHM players are vying for), and “you’re not as good as you think you are”, is unprofessional and disgraceful, and should not be tolerated in NRFL premier competition

Wanganui were actually not bad. Was expecting them to not be able to kick a football but far from it.

so do you think it could be no real game plan or enough experienced players who know how to change the plan as the game progresses ?
iv'e seen a few very talented young players in the lower leagues the last couple of years who keep doing the same plan a and have not worked on a plan b or c and once there opponents have plan a covered it's good night nurse….
is it the coaching or is it the players thinking there A game is all it needs to be?

Their coach Shane must have legged it a couple of weeks ago. Sounds like they are playing better now though. Maybe they can get their first goal v Utd next week who must have lost their last five games?

I dunno - from what I have seen there have been a lot of reckless 'ball or player' challenges this season in the WCL

Have you guys seen the 'predict results' tab by the way?  Best feature I have seen yet!

I think 3 of the games will be very interesting this week:

United vs Karori - the winner will hold third spot
Lower Hutt vs Valeron - I think this will be very interesting.  Both teams have good attacks - but tend to bleed a few goals.  But I am picking Lower Hutt - which will keep the 'out of welly teams' bookending the league.
Seatoun vs Upper Hutt - I am not sure what has happened to Grace, but she didn't seem to feature against Karori? (Greenie?)  The Hutt might be able to grab 1 or all three points from this one!  Especially on the back of a strong performance against Karori.

what's the predictor all about? I just went to type in 10 for Massey but it only allows single digits

For a spectator on Sunday watching the Wanganui Athletic women face off against Lower Hutt City in the Central League, you would have been forgiven for assuming you were watching a completely different team to the one that graced Wembley Park in previous matches.

Athletic came out from the first whistle full of intent, and spent the majority of the half on the attack, pushing the visitors back into their own half, much to the surprise of the visitors.

Athletic created wave after wave of attack and forced Lower Hutt into showing their defensive ability, as the visitors often looked panicky at the back.

Rose Lockett was unlucky not to convert a gift opportunity, after she managed to get in behind the Lower Hutt defence and put herself one-on-one with the keeper, with acres of space to use.

With a Lower Hutt defender breathing down her neck, her resulting shot unluckily sailed over the crossbar, having easily beaten the keeper in flight.

While still controlling the game, Athletic were unlucky to concede a goal in the dying minutes of the first half, with Melanie Ragg beaten on her near post from a shot that squeezed between her leg and the goalpost.

With the scoreline at just 1-0 at halftime, the belief was evident from Athletic that they were still in the match and were ready to take it to the visitors, but Lower Hutt also returned with a renewed attitude.

They came out and controlled the game, turning the Athletic defenders back toward their own goal and, with just 10 minutes on the clock, they registered a second goal to their tally.

Lower Hutt again attacked Athletic's goal and caught their defenders napping when a beautifully delivered cross was sent toward the back post, finding a free player to make the score 2-0.

The women in red held out well for another 10 minutes before their spirit seemed to be broken when a lofty cross-cum-shot was delivered from wide out on the right hand side.

The shot caught a lucky gust of wind, catching Ragg out of position, and sent the ball sailing into the far edge inside the net.

Athletic struggled home and were unlucky to concede one more goal in the last 10 minutes, leaving the score at 4-0 on the final whistle.

But this was a vastly improved effort from Athletic compared to previous outings, and credit should be given to coach Donna Kahl and her technical/tactical assistant Neihana Kahl for their work in turning around the performances in such a short space of time.

The Athletic women now prepare for a tough test of how far they have come as they travel to Palmerston North's Memorial Park on Saturday, to face league leaders Massey

Went to Seatoun vs Upper Hutt. Great performance from the UH keeper kept the score down, should have been 8-2 but ended just 3-2 to Seatoun

Wanagnui had double figures put past them for the 6th time from 11 games. now conceded 92 with 1 for. Play Valeron this weekend. Will that see the century brought up or will it be the following week v Seatoun?

A visit in a howling southerly (or Northerly) may cure your enthusiasm for Seatoun!

Heh. The light southerly yesterday was certainly enough to give me pause for thought!

HA! Call THAT a southerly?? was but the merest gentle zephyr wafting its way North from the millpond like Cook Straight.

It wasn't the strength of it, more the temperature. The sun was lovely but with the wind-chill I was getting frost-bite! (Soft Aucklander alert)
