I now have tickets to both the Welly and Auck derbies (the first one).

The Auck game is already looking packed months out. Based on what is gone already, I will be surprised if it is not a sell out.

Whatever your thoughts on Auckland and The Port, this to be me is an impressive effort and genuine football fan based. They should still get off FB though.

Super excited to finally share what myself &
Nick Pearson have been working on in the background. 'Blue Smoke' debuted at The Port event down at The Chamberlain (Tyler St Sport) a few weeks back, with great reception from Auckland FC.

Well today it's out officially, here's a lyric vid and a description of why and how it came about...

"Blue Smoke is quite possibly the most kiwi song ever made. In early 1949 a 78-rpm disc featuring the song, written by Ruru Karaitiana and sung by Pixie Williams, became the first record wholly produced in New Zealand from composition to pressing. Karaitiana wrote the song much earlier in 1940 on a transfer boat while serving in WW2 as part of the 28th Māori Battalion, with the song being performed by the battalion's concert party throughout the war.

There have been countless cover versions, probably none more famous than Dean Martin’s version, so why do we need another one? Because the newly founded A League football club, Auckland FC, needs a club song that expresses a history of regional belonging, community and spirit. So, a couple of musicians have been working hard behind the scenes to produce a song that would inspire a football team and bring an entire stadium to voice.

Half Volley are musical duo, Nick Pearson and Adrian Drew, a creation of necessity really. The two met virtually in 2024, through the Auckland FC endorsed supporters’ group, The Port. Nick has been playing the Blues and fronting cover bands for years, you will hear him banging the drum at Mt Smart on gameday. Adrian is a songwriter and fronts the alt-rock band INVESTIGATOR, he was brought in because of his previous work on the Mt Albert/Ponsonby club song. The two bonded instantly over their love of music, when Nick (out of the blue smoke) suggested just that as a potential anthem for the team. It was the obvious choice, and Adrian has a deeper connection with the song, his Nanna recorded a version in the 50’s, which they still have on vinyl.

With the song chosen, the arrangement and recording all happened north of Auckland at the Investigator Music Studio in the heart of the Kaipara, Maungaturoto. Nick takes the lead on guitars and vocals, with Adrian supplying the rhythm section and backing vocals. There are some wonderful moments in the song, like Nick’s choice of vocal melody in the outro, or the gorgeous guitar fingerpicking throughout. The chorus takes on a whole life of its own, with gang vox and harmonies. The result is a real swinging, foot stomper. It’s hearty, heartfelt and nostalgic - yet modernized and joyful."

Liverpool "Never Walk Alone" and West Ham is "Forever Blowing Bubbles"... but I can see "Blue Smoke" for Auckland FC!

Cool song, better than anything that has been done for the nix over the years. Only really works if they are allowed to bring blue flares or smoke bombs into the grounds though

Has history repeated & we have the next Steriogram on our hands?

Oh well, that screws my suggestion to AuckFC media they use Edward Elgar's 'The Black Knight', Opus 25, a symphony/cantata for orchestra & chorus as their pre-match rabble rouser.

Pretty decent effort. Song has history, easy to sing along to and would sound great if the whole stadium belted it out. Hope it takes off for them, certainly adds some character

Blue Smoke. Well done. That’s a quite a good arrangement. The flow and tempo make it easy to sing. Put the lyrics up on the big screen on match day and it could well take off as the clubs theme song.
I always thought <Now is the Hour> would also make an excellent stadium song.(Yellowfever????) There is no doubt about the power and emotion that can come from a stadium song. Liverpool being an obvious example.
Last month I had the pleasure to see Real Sociedad play live at their stadium in San Sebastián  in Spain. They sang a traditional Basque hymne and it  was incredibly moving. People were singing with tears streaming down their faces.

That song is rather boring unfortunately

The history behind the song is pretty cool, and the effort a couple of their fans have gone to is impressive - but yeah it is a bit dull.

You can't easily mimic Liverpool or for that matter Real Sociedad. I mean Athletic Bilbao proudly still only select players of Basque heritage??  Singing a historical song in the Basque language no doubt stirs the emotions of fans of both those clubs. That ain't happening at Mt Smart

True, Can’t see Auckland fans singing in unison like at Anfield. It will be interesting to see what sort of ambiance AFC supporters can generate on match day. To be honest the locals were always fairly quiet/dull when ever the Nix played in Auckland.

Well from the research I’ve done, unless the guys first name is James and he has recently had his contract ripped up by his Spanish club, all off contract players all seem very underwhelming and none you could possibly call a marquee.

I can only hope this is some 18 year wonder kid, that has been scouted extensively by Bournemouth and will be playing in the premiership within 12 months.

Piney on the football fever pod saying Auckland's final visa signing is a South American, and a few moments later saying it is a Colombian attacking midfielder.

I don't have a name, but surely someone is able to do some digging?

I've done my heavy lifting for now. 😅

Yeah I believe they ruled out a well known marquee in that 1 news video BigPete linked to a week ago - said it was something they may look into in the future - despite what Foley was saying when first unveiling the club.

So it'll likely be someone we haven't heard of before

Mind you, it's similar when the Nix play games in Chch. It's generally just clap clap phoenix for 90 minutes.

It might be different now they have their own team and games week in week out to get together and organise support etc

Yea put it up on the screen pre-match, see if it takes off. Would be cool to see Auckland fans get behind something like this.

Brings me to a bit of a side point.. I remember back in the early Nix days (2007-10 ish) we had a classic football/FIFA song that used to get everyone fired up and chanting pre-match as the players walked out. I can't remember what it's called, but the energy was amazing. Feels like the songs pre-match now tend to be random crap pop songs that no one wants to hear.

I've said it before, but hands down the most dead football atmosphere I've ever experienced was the All Whites vs Australia game in 2022 at Eden Park. Big attendance, zero crowd interest.

luckily there was a safety net and the dog ended up in it. would have happened anyway whether Cuello tried to save it or not. At least with Jason Batty there was more of him to cover the goal
