So many different supporter groups, their home games are either gonna be really noisy or very confused.

Oh man, I’m so conflicted.

I wanna like Auckland FC, to the point I had a dream we went to an away function to watch them.

But also Corica and McFlynn are some of my least favourite opponents and damned if I’m letting them off being who they were!

And being honest so far the Port guys have fit in with that too.

I’m getting aware that both my caps are blue now too. Which used to be a primarily Japanese football colour, but someone has sent me an Aces one and that’s very close.

But I really like the Springs location and the idea of an 18k seater is great. Only problem is the same as here. You get a big game there it will sell out in advance and catch you out. Happened to me twice here.

Hope they can get the stadium done in a year or two. Again- cash determination and hopefully a well known site (with all the water flow considered!)

I wonder who after Paulsen who will be the first real transfer Judas. Be gutted if Gothard went there tbh. Always enjoyed his picking up the odd yellow!

Football soon! Hope it continues to be covered over here.
While The Port are certainly a mixed bag, the communists over in Bay 25 are nice guys

What an eclectic crowd mix, Mt Smart is going to be

Hey Fellow Aucklanders. A few of us lads were talking last night about creating a small but proud section of supporters of the port bay 22! who want to show off what being a Jaffa and New Zealander uniquely means to you and I, without the tall poppy syndrome. This small section of us “The Paddock” aim to preserve a grassroots culture to our active support area and incorporate some of the funny things we all love about Auckland.

From nights on Karangahape, Big Ben pies & a dart, lion reds & a slap and kiwi classics from our forefathers. Bring your gumboots, mullets, lion red apparel, stubbies. Yes Kiwi sport culture has always been full of tall poppy’s but the port will change that and regardless I’m still always proud to be a Jaffa and kiwi.

Surely more supporter groups are a good thing?

Struggle to see how someone could find a negative in this.

Three for me, and two for them.

Bar 101? I’m in!
But Auckland is about the only place in NZ without paddocks? They went looking for Auckland culture and found the 1970s in the countryside?

Dunno about the Lion Red. I drank some Waikato draught, but washed it down with Hapi Daze in aid of the Phoenix cause.

Still what I really wanna say is:

I do think AFC hae done a good job getting their name out there, through all the promo stuff they have done.

All they need is a good first up win to create some positive noise/chatter around all the rest.

Would love to know how many season tickets they have sold?

I will be heading up to their first game from the Tron, sitting behing the PORT. I won't be joining in on any chants etc, but will let you know if I think they are any good.

I considered driving up from the tron, especially with the rebelsport 2 for 1 ticket deal but my usual football associate is busy that weekend. I suspect I'll go to the derby for sure (although my mate doesn't want me to wear a nix top as he is an Aucklander and supports afc now.

Serious question - is there any specific issue/matter the people in bay 25 will be highlighting at the beginning of the season?
The short answer is I dunno.
The longer answer is probably not in the first game because a lot of the "T-AFC Elite" are away, so it's a question of getting established first.
BTW I think The Paddock sound like cool customers.

Never said it was negative, just that it could go either way, they'll either compliment themselves and make a whole tonne of noise, or they'll spend the entire game focussed on each other and it will be awful.

It’s a reference to “Fever Elite” as a way to describe the main organisers…

I blame YF. It has inspired all these people to run their own group but found too many want to run the show. Therefore they have started up their own little factions. Will be interesting to see how different their game atmosphere might be to ours.

Even YF at it's best can be a little confused on game day, and we/they are organised as a single group.

From what i recall there has only really been one other group Thorndon Terrace and they didnt stay around that long. For whatever reason. Has always been the odd pocket here and there but has seemed from the start that those who wanted to be active assemble around things YF does.
Think people like to tag on to Fever stuff without seemingly being a part of it if that makes sense.
Think one of the appeals and at times frustrations is that it isnt overly organized.

You were introduced to Auckland FC by Tim Brown. How long have you known Tim and how did you two meet?

“I’ve known Tim for a number of years, we connected as two Kiwis overseas in the US. We bonded over a hike to a trail to Golden Gate Bridge. I pulled out a coconut and machete and cracked it open for him. He was really taken aback like ‘Who is this guy?’ We’ve been cool ever since.

“Especially because he’s an athlete too. He’s a great success story of evolving from an athlete to starting his own business. I heard Tim speak at an event for Te Hono around sustainability as well.”

You attended Scots College in Wellington and played for the Wellington Saints before heading to the States – do you think Wellington Phoenix fans will take it easy on you?

“I hope for grace.”

I will hate this team when we play them....but if these imports are all decent, they have a good solid squad with good depth.

Good luck to them as it helps Nz football grow.

It would be very interesting to know if they have tapped big time into the Foley football group recruitment network to find these players or if it’s just been down to usual means.

Hopefully a football journalist can ask

4 of the visa players are in their mid to late twenties. Don’t see any of them being the young talented sort who will progress onto Hibs or Lorient let alone the Cherries. Though Foley’s now looking to add a Portuguese club to his stable

And of course Auckland is likely Sakai’s last pro gig, and sounds like was just some luck his availability came into Corica’s orbit

Meh, I don't care for his reasoning.  Has he heard of saying No.  No one forced him to support our rivals who have a shark ton more money than us.  Plenty of other ways he could help grass roots football if he wanted to.

“I feel a real sense of needing to repay some of the opportunities that that I was given through the game.”

Wasn’t the Knights buddy. It was Terry and the Nix.

Such a hero of mine, both with his play, his involvement in the promotion around 2009 and 2010 and his subsequent career.

But losing a bit of respect that through all the wobbles the Nix went through being based overseas, the license dramas, and then through propping up other clubs in the league, I’m sure they would have been fine with a contribution towards keeping the academy going or getting the women’s team started. If the first NZ A league club falls over, then it’s much less likely we’re talking two or three.

Is it an investment he thinks he can see a return on? Rather than a contribution towards an enterprise losing money.

Personally along with probably wanting to get behind football in NZ and there was never going to be an opportunity with Welnix, this is mainly why he has gone with Auckland FC.

Brown had been attracted by the “opportunity to learn” from someone who “has got a track record of building extraordinary brands and extraordinary businesses”.

Won't hurt his opportunities in business to be friends with a billionaire

How do you measure a shark load? Rob Morrison’s Infratil shareholding is worth half a billion on its on. What’s is Rob’s current net worth?

He’s been fantastic for the Nix - as Brown mentions - and his wealth is his business, but this narrative that AFC is bling and the Nix penniless paupers, likely not quite true

Sounds as much that Brown and Foley are in the same circles, whilst Welnix for whatever reason never really approached Brown?? A future question for Domey

For sure having a new mate in Bill, could open some new doors for All Birds. But anyone who’s run a business at whatever level, will say you never stop learning, and having many successful mentors around you who have a tonne of different experiences, can be hugely important.

Yeah, I posted elsewhere it's hard to know who's still in WelNix, so assuming the ownership is the same as when they were first announced then:

As you say, Rob is worth hundreds of millions just through Morison and Co, he also has plenty of other investments (like Foley, Rob owns a few Wairarapa vineyards amongst other things).

Henry's family (the Todd family, owners of Todd Energy and Nova Energy) is worth a few billion.

Lib also has money from Morrison and Co and likely other investments, his other hobbies include race horses and he's won the Melbourne Cup, so he's not skint.

Gareth made a lot of money selling his kiwi saver fund to Kiwibank, he also had shares in trademe when it was sold.

Although, the Phoenix ownership group isn't as wealthy as Auckland, they're not paupers either. If the above group is still intact then the Nix are probably better off than quite a few A-League teams.

I mean it’d been discussed. Durante put it directly to him. But first he’s getting his business established and then he’s suffered a drop in shares and playing off the back foot business wise.

On here I think we sort of said maybe he needs to get more settled before we approach him, as if we the fans had any say! But I think most of us hoped he’d come to our party down the line.

Browny has always talked a good game (in fact got a bit of a ticking off from Kim Hill for sticking to business jargon and not being more of himself or communicative!), but this doesn’t seem so much as paying anything back, but getting in on a good thing- associating his brand publicly with several other popular and successful brands at a minimum.

If it was more about repaying there is always a way in NZF. Reid had his Maori scholarship and tournament iirc.
