What are people’s thoughts on the facts that A-League teams can only have 5 imports at most? Is this something we support?

Its like the salary cap, you need them to keep the league competitive and if you want to develop local players. If you don't care about that and some clubs spending more, then you get rid of both. Personally I don't see them removing either anytime soon.

I'd be for raising it to 6 or 7, and upping the cap to $3.5m

Is the second half ladder coming in 45 minutes?!
I wonder if it reflects fitness / coaching strategy / player mindfulness ...

Hyundai A-League to pause for international windows from next seasonFootball Federation Australia (FFA), the Hyundai A-League clubs and major broadcaster FOX SPORTS have agreed to incorporate FIFA international breaks into the league from next season.

The decision means that the season will start on 19 October, slightly later than usual to avoid the international window earlier in the month.

There will be two further international breaks, from 12-20 November and 18-26 March.

The later start means the finals series will begin in May with the Hyundai A-League 2019 Grand Final to be held on the weekend 18/19 May, 2019.

FFA chief executive David Gallop and Head of the Hyundai A-League Greg O’Rourke thanked the clubs and FOX SPORTS for their positive collaboration with FFA on the changes.

“With our broadcasters and commercial partners we have been conscious always of the need to balance the benefits of week to week continuity in the league against the benefits of stopping for international breaks,” said Gallop.

“After extensive discussions with the clubs and with FOX SPORTS over recent weeks we have all agreed to incorporate the international breaks.”

O’Rourke said FFA Cup semi-finals and potential Caltex Socceroos/Westfield Matildas matches in early October would provide a prelude to the Hyundai A-League season.

He said the league would continue during next January’s AFC Asian Cup in the UAE where the Caltex Socceroos will be the defending champions.

“The later finish to the season also means that more of the Hyundai A-League will overlap with the community football season, helping us to connect the league to our massive participation base.”

O’Rourke said further details of the schedule for next season and on a range of other initiatives being discussed with the Hyundai A-League clubs, FOX SPORTS and other stakeholders would be announced in due course.

“Given there are also two FIFA windows for women inside the Westfield W-League this coming season, we are also looking at the Westfield Matildas program and possible ways this could apply to the Westfield W-League calendar,” he said.

I never mind the lack of pro rel. of course it’d be great if there were dozens of viable professional teams, so we could have prorel. But I’ve never thought the lack of it didn’t make any league any less of a ‘real league’

There are teams playing each other in football for points, the team with the most points at the end of the season wins the league. Sounds like a real league to me.

A closed league doesn’t capture the essence of football as well as a prorel system does. Instead it needs to create false drama because it lacks the natural drama of prorel. AFL, league and union, basketball too, in OZ/NZ have semi finals/final for this very reason. Without 40-60% of teams in semi final contention there are too many meaningless games. To me prorel is the key defining characteristic and drama of our code, pretty much everywhere.  We should always aspire to it.

The benefits of pro/rel were highlighted, by the last day drama for Morecambe (Steven Old), Scodh-thorpe (ClaytonLewis), Bolton Wanders (Adam Mitchell), Heerenveen (Rojas), NEC Nijmegen (Michael Heijer) etc. It's not only the drama and interest of the last day, but the weeks preceding. Adds extra intrigue and coverage to these leagues for sure.

Having pro/rel will be difficult and complex for A League, but certainly should be aimed for. It will be unique for a major Australian/NZ sporting code - that in itself should create extra interest amongst general sporting public.

Jets sent a pretty strong squad to China for their pre-season trip whilst Sydney have sent their youth team. Guessing the Chinese organisers won't be overly happy with that.

Adrian Mierzejewski for his new side failed a panenka penalty against Glen Moss, you can't make it up.
