Are the Visa slots even gonna matter with the tighter salary cap?

Feels like every team will be marquee + couple of well payed players + whatever fumes you can scrap together with the rest.

Gillion is probably relatively very cheap. Looked a lot more composed in his cameos after pro league.

From what I can see they only used four of their import spots last year anyway.

They'll still have a part to play, but maybe not as exciting as before. Might be like 2 good visa players and the others are average. But there will always be some random position where there isn't a strong number of quality option from NZ/Aus.

Could mean a lot more visa spots go to decent Kiwi players.

Maybe their goal is to pillage the champions!!

If the Dan Hall rumours are true then with an increased wage for him they will need cheap imports.

May as well take them from AFC!

With WSW, maybe they’re having a reconsider of their policy?

They had Mata and Stajich wouldn’t play him, then he became a talisman at Victory.
Then they splashed more cash on Ryan Fraser who arrived with a bang and then contributed very little and they finished below us despite what we’d think of as a reasonable squad with Kosta, Kraev, Thurgate et al.

Then Newcastle won it with kids.

Wanderers wasted too many chances into the ad boards and posts, surprisingly low scoring. Got to recruit in form wingers and strikers. Alou Kuol and Hiroshi Ibusuki out, surely.

Geez, it must be good money. Watched an article on Kewell’s career the other day on Sky with lots of interviews in Vietnam. Kewells apartment seemed nice but the rest of the football set up all looked rough as guts.

Needs to put some money into Kewells desk in his office and the training ground. It all looked pants.

If true it’s a shame for Hall. Really think he is up to a higher league.

Thanks MartinB, this is exactly what I've been wondering.  Since finishing as runners-up in 2015-2016, WSW have not been better than bang on average, despite having a bunch of decent players including imports, and competent coaches.  Puts our own travails in perspective.
WSW last ten seasons (since coming second in 2015-2016):

2025–26: 12th place
2024–25: 5th place (Eliminated in Elimination-Finals)
2023–24: 7th place
2022–23: 4th place (Eliminated in Elimination-Finals)
2021–22: 10th place
2020-21: 8th
2019-20: 9th
2018-2019: 8th
2017-2018: 8th
2016-2017: 6th

If this was us, I guess the accusations of "loser mentality" would be flying.

Wanderers missed finals 7 seasons in the last 10 years then. Wow. Genuinely awful. Not as bad as Brisbane, Perth, pre Milligan Jets but still awful.

On the Unused subs Eric Partalou said he knows for a fact that AFC is going to lose at least 4 players.
So its Randall and now Hall. Who else?
I suspect older players like Gallagos. But i would imagine foreign clubs would be looking at Verstatae.
I guess it depends on how the club fits in the new salary cap.
Expect a few more young kiwis in the side.
It wouldnt suprise me if a big Asian club goes for Corica. He seems destined to follow the path of Arnold, Posticoglu etc

Off Contract:
Louis Verstraete
Cameron Howieson
Luis Felipe Gallegos
Guillermo May
Marlee Francois
Jimmy Hilton
Liam Gillion
Adama Coulibaly
Finn Mckenlay
Oliver Middleton
Jesse Randall
Oli Sail
Dan Hall
Joseph Knowles
Jonty Bidois

Randall leaving for sure. Hall & Gillion linked to moves.

Could see Verstraete having a lot of interest. Seem to recall someone mentioning a dodgy Facebook rumour on Twitter about May leaving but can't find it.

The rumour was May to the Jets to replace Rose.

Can't see Francois staying, but maybe with the salary cap rejigging they'll have to keep him?

Haven't been impressed with Francois, probably better to invest more time in Van Fitzharris tbh.

Wonder where Gibson is going?
He's a Kiwi. Have the Nix or AFC signed him? Thought he'd stay at the Jets with Rose going to Scotland. Seems like Bayliss is going to Auckland.

Rose, Natta, Taylor and Bayliss all big departures for Milligan to fill.

Tayloir apparently going to Europe, and Natta is tipped to sign for Ashley Cole’s Serie B outfit Cesena.

And pretty sure all of Gibson, Rose, Natta, Taylor and Bayliss have left Newcastle on a free.
At face value that's a large amount of potentially lost revenue for the them. Though I don't think any of them came through the Jets Academy.

But remember all these guys leaving on a free, the next time someone criticises the Nix for having a promising young Kiwi exit without a transfer fee.

The Jets gave Ryan Feutz a trial last season. He might be a chance of getting a contract there now after these departures. He played some NPL football at a Newcastle area club.

I saw rumours of eli adams leaving too. Gutted for them and the league that they are yet another succcessful team that immediately gets their squad gutted after a great season

Yes they were very enoyable to watch this season, when not playing the Nix.
It's almost like the smaller clubs, eg Jets, Mariners, Nix etc get a 1-2 season window to win a trophy. But then they are asset stripped, and fall back into the pack.

Milligan will truly have the midas touch if he can repeat this season just gone, in 26/27.

Bit like how I saw an older Crystal Place fan on the telly, tell the younger brigade around him - enjoy this last 12 months (2 trophies). This is far from the norm with our sort of club.

Taylor, Gibson & Bayliss all have the same agent. He tried to force the Jets to let Taylor out of his deal last of season, so they were very unlikely to stay.

If I recall corectly, May was their most expensive player and while he definitely lifted in the last part of the season, he had a terrible run for months (poor games and injuries).  I would be surprised if the club was keen to retain him on current terms.

Yep, time to refresh two import spots irrespective of salary cap - May and Gallegos.

Good servants, who did their job in the first year but a refresh is vital in those spots.

Former Melbourne Victory striker Nikos Vergos is poised to join the Newcastle Jets.

As previously reported by News Corp Australia, Bayliss is set to join A-League champions Auckland FC, Natta is close to linking with Italian second division club Cesena and Scicluna is headed for Perth Glory.

Despite being contracted to Newcastle for another season, star winger Eli Adams is also poised to leave the Jets.

It’s understood that at least seven overseas clubs – Red Bull Salzburg (Austria), Derby County (England), FC Copenhagen (Denmark), Gent (Belgium), FC Nurnberg (Germany), Holstein Kiel (Germany) and Gamba Osaka (Japan) – are showing interest in the services of Adams.

Eli Adams is going to have a huge career IMO. Probably the best attacking prospect out of Oz for ages. I hope he gets good advice on where to go. So many young players go to biggish clubs and then sit on the bench and/or get constantly loaned out.
Libby managed his career perfectly. A smallish club in Belgium. Lots of games then transfer to a smallish club in a big league Empoli.  Lots of game time then a transfer to a Championship club pushing for the EPL .

Given how key he has been to AFC's success, he surely gets offered a marquee level deal.

Re: Brimmer, he still has 2 years on his deal & would be on a decent wedge. They might have to try and offload him to a South East Asian side with deep pockets.

Agree, in normal cases but I’m wondering if they are thinking about the possibility of Wood the season after next when he comes off contract.

Therefore, they may make Cosgrove a marquee (who has one year left) and then hopefully switch the marquee onto Wood.

I had thought Sakai would be on the biggest contract at Auckland and therefore would take the 1 marquee slot in the new hard salary cap rules next season - anyone know what sort of money Sakai is on?

Think with his latest contract it may be more about lifestyle for him at this stage of his career.
