By Championship, you mean the wooden spoon right? Right?

If the league format was reversed and the wooden spoon was the championship prize then yes, yes indeed.
I really do hope at least one more midfielder is signed. If this season is anything to go by we shouldn't have to rely on a few players (i.e. Riera) then injuries occur and we have to resort to young guys and signing back up players to put out a squad.

Thoughts on Richard Porta as a striker for us.  Has represented Aussie and Uruguay at various levels, so no import but has played at a very high level in South America:

Richard Porta

Could be expensive considering he went to Dubai for a big wage.
Given experience seems a down grade on Stein so I don't think it's likely or worthy.

I agree. Porta never really wanted to return to Australia to play in the A-League. He strikes me as one of the players who were raised in Australia but then spent so much time elsewhere that they never "called Australia home" much afterwards. Example that comes to mind is Joe Didulica, Croatian national team goalkeeper, but there were others (someone pretty good in Serie A, but the name escapes me).

Anyway, I am digressing.... I think Porta would aim for a gig elsewhere than Welly since he's not even looking at a HAL club in the West Island that I know of.

Actually, getting outplayed quite a bit these days

Im surprised he didnt come to the A-League a couple years ago, aiming for a World Cup place but he has nothing to play for now, apart from money.

Jets have released Zadkovich (he is on his way to Perth) but he is someone would could have used, he has the engine we need as a box to box player.

There has been a few players released from their contracts early so far, maybe there is hope for Wee Mac to join us then.

Yep an improvement on Lia. I know we aren't after Chris James but thought he was certainly looking in shape when he was on the crowd goes wild. So to whoever said he was overweight ..

Was he standing next to Mconie?

Allegedly

Zadkovic is too close to Clapham, if we wanted Ruben then we may as well have just signed Clapham. Killen could have also done that job.

Zadkovich?

Jesus wept...

We are not interested in Payne or James and are not going to use the Visa spot on the box to box midfielder. Of the options available, he would have been one of the better ones tbh.

Feeling inexplicably optimistic that with WeeMac back in the country for the AWs we'll have an announcement that he's a Nix player very soon...

...or at least confirmation he's not coming so we can look elsewhere...

This story today says Ifill's off the books so does anyone know what his next move will be playing or coaching wise?

You're reading too much into it. He is out of contract but as far as I am aware is still rehabbing with the club. If he does get back to fitness and gains residency he might be offered a new contract. It may be at a reduced wage in which case it would still free up money. Or he not be back at all. We just have to wait and see.

Yep he's been off the books for a few weeks now. Has been tweeting about wanting to stay with the club though.

He still has a chance at being signed. IIRC, the club will let him rehab with them and since he will become a naturalised kiwi soon he won't count as a foreign spot. Then it's up to Ernie to see if he wants him and at what price and Ifill to agree to the terms. He won't be a priority signing but could come into contention later, depending how the rest of the off season pans out.

I've read that if an injury is career ending then you get a years wages at your previous years rates. If that's true then it's probably in Ifills best interests to quit if he can't get a decent wage post injury. However its in ours for him to sign at a lower wage.

Guess it would depend on the definition of 'career ending', but yes you get 2 years pay out if your career is ended by injury in the A-League. In normal circumstances a ruptured achilles isn't really a career ending injury.

Can that be negotiated with insurance company? In this case his salary would probably be going down, it would be in the interests of the player, insurance company and prospective teams to reach a deal.

From everything I've picked up about Ifill, I really don't think that money will be the driving factor in a decision to come back or not.

Sign McGlinchey on tonights form alone. He's running the show and looking excellent at doing it.

Ifill should be given some role at the club, and he should join the Sky Sport commentary team. And be part of half time punditry for games.

Re Chris James - I watched the replay this morning and after Boyd took that shot which hit the side netting, James gave him plenty for not crossing it. IMO Boyd took the right option (possibly let himself down with his first touch and obviously poor execution) but that could have been a hint of the attitude people have speculated about. I know a lot of players react that way but for an AW "friendly" with a very young squad I would expect him to be a bit more positive towards the younger players. James Dean will probably shoot this down but for a guy with no club he should probably be trying to make good impressions with both football and attitude.

Fuck this stupid game

I've seen a fair few handy club players who are wankers at the best of times bounce around clubs because no one goes out of their way to keep them around. It's different because it's not pro football but everyone says the phoenix don't tolerate those players either - Gao, Pav, Carlos, Elrich (?) to name a few.

And he knows Merrick. Has he been injured? And what would he want? He would be looking to play in Riera's position yeh?
So assuming a 4-3-3- we'd have Celeski/Riera, Gorrin and Wee Mac in the midfield....?

I wasn't happy from my armchair that Tyler hit that shot near post rather than putting it across goal too. A more experienced striker might have chosen the more likely option.

Oi Oi Edgecumbe... lets have a clean sheet

He'd want a bit of money I'd imagine. He's been playing in the CSL and in UAE since A-league.

watch it again, because of his first touch the defender recovered and Boyd only had the near post side of the keeper open.
