Probably for the home team. FFA are probably thinking [if they are at all] about the effect of a name marquee would have whenever he appeared everywhere around Australia. I know for a fact that it attracts fans, I traveled from Napier especially to see both ADP and Fowler, would of done for Hesky too if he was available.

Hmmm... imo in a small but party town like Wellington the novelty of having a big-name player if marketed right shouldn't wear off just like that. He'd have to be a social retard to disappear off the media radar, even if results weren't brilliant. Plus, being a Big Name, he'd put another 15 - 20k on the Auckland gate.

Heskey did play in Wellington at least once though. I distinctly remember him ending a game playing CB because one of the starting CBs got sent off and they were out of subs. Agree with the gist o it though - I had mates come down from Palmy for the first ADP game, but they've never come down for any other Phoenix games. One of them is a massive Juve fan though

My thoughts as well.  I did wonder about Joao Moreira though if we were looking at ASB Prem players.  He'd offer a bit of a plan B.

Not sure if serious or sarcastic. He isn;t scoring goals against amateur opponents. What makes you think he would cut it against better defenders?

There is also no evidence to support the claim that a marquee (rather than the ones we have) would bring more pwople in.  Del Piero hardly gave us a sell-out when he visited, nor did Fowler.  Signing a big name Italian or Greek into Syndey or Melbourne might be a crowd puller but it's not going to bring Joe Lunchpail to a Phoenix game or change the mind of the blinkered Euro snob.

Win games and people will attend.  Your marquee can be a no name from Andorra but if he scores 20 goals a season you'll get a crowd buff, if he's a European big name here for a holiday and your team suffers through having him in it all you have done is waste money and given the papers a couple of headlines.

Ildefons Lima! He's Andorra's top goal scorer.

May be off topic, but here is an interesting bit from the A-League website on available players:

"Sergio Van Dijk has already been a smash hit in the A-League, scoring 50 goals in 105 appearances for Brisbane and Adelaide respectively. Will be a free agent this month when his deal at Thailand club Suphanburi ends."

http://www.a-league.com.au/photo-gallery/11-transf...

I've always assumed his contract in Thailand runs until middle of this year.

OK so he is not a visa-free player, and is likely to be expensive. But who knows.

I would compare him at his current age and speed (and experience) to someone like Smeltz rather than Henrique.

Would tick a "metric" box with FFA for us.

He's off contract as Thai season runs from Feb to whenever they get round to finishing (this year Dec). He's not in Supanburi's plans for next season, despite being the club's top scorer, netting 14 times for them (8th-best in League). A shame he's an import, & we'd need to sack one of the current bunch or naturalise Riera to fit him in (does Roy's injury open a door here?). On the plus side, he'd qualify as Asian, enabling us to have 3+1 on the pitch

Could we loan Devante Clut for the rest of the season?.

Would that mean the Reds are not going to go after Troisi?

Unless Sergio is going cheap, they probably would not be able to get both.

Apparently Sergio was signed for the acl so outside  the cap. They also have a marquee spot open.

I'm assuming all this speculation is about players we may try and get in the off season as nearly every interview I've seen or heard with Ernie, he says we're not signing anyone in January.

Troisi's manager has confirmed that the Phoenix have an offer on the table, it will be for a Jan transfer.

Ernie said that they aren't moving in the market because no one any good is available, the implication being if the right person was available we would go got them. This was also before Krishna s injury.

Phoenix also denied they were signing WeeMac even though it was common knowledge for months before it was leaked by the FFA. Could just be Merrick being cagey. Not looking at closely is different than not looking at all.

If we don't sign someone we're fudgeed, they must know it. Even if it's taking a punt that may or may not pay off.

Heard him on Radio Sport today saying they would be signing someone on a 12 week contract for Krishna. Said they were looking in NSW, Victoria and NZ state leagues.

That explains why Troisi is going to Asia after all. There is still serious money there on offer even if global oil / gas prices have come down over the last few years. And with the thawing of international relations with Iran who knows who the mighty Sepahan will recruit for their ACL campaign (if they've qualified).

Troisi was never realistic - he's overpriced for what he would bring, as any Aussie returning from overseas clubs usually are.

We do need a Krishna replacement asap, though - someone direct who can score goals. Without him, our attack is blunt.

I like the look of the Futsal guy from ACFC.

Quick and direct with some flair.

Consider that this season only the Jets scored fewer goals than us (9, two of which came against us)

Interesting how active Perth Glory are being - Fernandez has already been cut. Would we be thinking of cutting Sarpong? I suppose Perth only did it because they had a replacement ready.

This has to be one of our weakest forward lines in some time without Krishna and without Sarpong firing at all.

I have no idea what circumstances led to this squad being assembled. Was it due to license problems or a lack of money? I just don't know. All I know is that this squad doesn't have the depth to be competitive in this league.

They always said the player budget is up on last year so either the license or just a lack of connections or someone to talk us up.

or we are paying way too much for Sarpong

I think we have money in the kitty but couldn't find the players.

Could be that with the uncertainty of a licence we could not get decent new people to commit for a reasonable price.

That is rumoured but yesterday vs Team Wellington he was very easily handled by Fergus Neal and Anthony Hobbs.  Worried it could go very Totori.  We need a more proven option.

By now I agree with others that the lack of available striker or two is only half of the problem on the pitch, how / where they are positioned became a problem last Sunday night against the Jettisons.
