I've had a season ticket the last 3 seasons. The two before that I had a Nix Six, as well as buying individual tickets to most of the other home games. So I'm sorry for trying to (and sometimes succeeding to)  get freebies to give to people who otherwise wouldn't have gone to the games to try and get them to become regulars. How dare I try and expand our fanbase. Instead of jumping to accuse me of not supporting the club, I would appreciate it if next time you took the time to find out what I've just mentioned

To be fair your comment did read like the tickets were for you.

Be to be even more fair even if they were at least you are attending and helping Metrics, not everyone can afford to do it, and based on this response you are trying to get more people keen on the Nix so are above and beyond.

Yea I can see the confusion now, but I still didn't appreciate being told to support the club suggesting that I haven't been over the last few seasons. After all, all that I was doing was pointing out that there are free tickets/special deals available after a it was questioned why this happens for the 'away' games, but not the ones in Wgtn

ballane and others keep making the point - possibly a good one - that sharkhouse onfield performance leads to sharkhouse ticket sales. But even given that, there's not a realistic way that Welnix or Ernie or FFA or even Almighty Zeus can affect that. It's not as if the players, the coach, the club or anyone else wants the Nix to suck on the field, or is doing anything that they could stop doing (or not doing something they could) to make the team win consistently and/or win pretty. The terrible truth is that if sustainable numbers depend on the Nix winning predictably, there is no way that that can be guaranteed. Or maybe some people think there is?

This is the point I keep making that the people who are angriest about the travelling circus don't offer a realistic alternative. The argument that having all games at home would build up a bandwagon effect is plausible, but it didn't happen in the first two seasons to my knowledge. And I really think that if anyone thinks there's something that could be done that isn't being done already that would reliably and predictably increase winning performance, they're dreaming.

totally agree mate.  It came out of left field and relied on an assumption, just because you made the mistake of clarifying something for someone.

My apologies for hitting a nerve. I didn't say you don't support the club at all, what I said is highlighted above. What I could have said is "by accepting the freebies, the club is missing out on a paying customer".

I didn't mean to question your integrity, I misunderstood your original post, it was implied that the free tickets were for you. Good on you for getting more people along, did they come to other games & buy tickets, or were they disillussioned with the usual tripe we get served up at "Home" ?  ;)

All good, I can see you're certainly passionate about all this. I actually don't know if they ended up going to more, but lets hope there's going to be plenty more opportunities in this season to do so.

And in response to you saying "by accepting the freebies, the club is missing out on a paying customer", I don't completely agree with that. There will be plenty of people who get free tickets who wouldn't have gone to games without them. But the short term loss could become a long term gain if these people get hooked and come back more often. But that's a bit off-topic

I'm pretty sure I didn't say it shouldn't, or wasn't - did I?

I merely pointed out that the internet is where people are judged on what they do (and don't) say by people who generally don't know all of either.

Thanks for reinforcing my point - intentionally or otherwise (FWIW I'm assuming otherwise - because this is the internet and assumption is encouraged lol).

I have an idea. Next season let the Nix play all their games in Auckland so we can assess how well the attendances go.

Got a good feeling( wink wink, nudge nudge) the nix road show will be hitting a new nz city this season. And it has a great stadium for watching and playing football. Can't wait to make a weekend of this one.

Newcastle paper reporting that the Jets host Adelaide first up, im thinking we might get Perth away.

442 saying the Glory will have 8 Saturday night & 1 Friday night game, guess this means a lot of triple headers. Wonder what this means for the 5pm sunday slot we normally play in?

Permalink Permalink

We need more 7pm Sunday night games to keep the fan attendances down. Especially 7pm Sunday nights at Eden Park.

No doubt we will get our usual 7pm Sunday night when Bathurst is on. Another metric met.

"This email message cannot be delivered to phoenixadmin@wellingtonphoenix.com because the email address is no longer valid."

Addendum, just went to the official site and it still has this address down as the contact address. Jesus wept.

PS, Here's what i had typed up to send. hopefully tomorrow I can get a proper email address to send it to......

"Below (in bold) is an email sent to you at the Phoenix from a long standing and passionate fan – Dave Lucas. I cannot disagree with a word of it and I wish to, in as strong a terms as allowed, to also register my complete disgust at the clubs handling of fixtures and fans. 4 “Home” games on the circus tour is 4 too many. It reads like a book – “How to lose friends and alienate Fans”.

Sorry but having not missed a game yet (121 in New Zealand) I fear my record is about to come to an end. Last season I took annual leave for every “home game” we had here, often to my wife’s annoyance. And to be honest, our home form was so abysmal that even I wondered if it was worth the effort and expense. Whether at Westpac or in the other centre’s. As a father with two children and a wife, the financial travelling costs tested the marriage. Not every Nix fan whom likes to attend the games, is a single high earner. Sadly, the player performances did not match the efforts put in at great expense and travel time (I drove to Auckland and happily took the Nix banners up there).

I have noticed that our attendances in our games in other centre’s have declined over the last few years and I now seriously question the novelty factor. It has worn off. If, after 10 years, other centre’s have not heard of the Phoenix, then something is seriously amiss. If our sponsors want to have more games in Auckland, let them start up a team up there. Sure we need sponsorship but what would the club rather have? Happy loyal fans or money? Winning will bring fans back, Sponsors come and go on a whim. I really hope the club have not sold out to 30 pieces of silver. Otherwise change the club name to the New Zealand Phoenix and play each home game at a different centre.

The amount of effort and one dimensional thinking over the last 7 years is amazing. Fans have been constantly threatened (& that is exactly what is was) with, “If the attendance’s do not improve we will move games to other centre’s”. The club could always try and build the Wellington fan base more. The $10 tickets were a good idea, the $10 parking under the stadium was a good idea – till it went up 50% last season. Everyone knows that Westpac stadium is shark except for Fran Wilde, so the club are going to have to come up with ways of getting bums on seats.

The YF have been doing their bit with the “Save the Nix” membership campaign. And to be honest, having extra games away from home is a kick in the teeth. Those memberships will be going to waste and I can predict, that they will drop as a result.

Another issue is the ridiculously long gaps between games at Westpac. The club did not capitalise on it when we did have a game every two weeks at the latter part of last season.

As if it isn’t hard enough putting up with 7pm Sunday night games usually on holiday weekends or when Bathurst is on.

Dave Lucas is right. Time for a concentrated effort on getting the locals there. We have 4 more years to get the base numbers up, playing these circus games is NOT going to achieve that.

Should I end up missing my attendance continuum, it will be a very sad day for me personally. I believe I am currently the only fan with 100% attendance. Something I am proud of, especially for the WELLINGTON Phoenix. It is not always about money and sponsors. It is always about fans otherwise you might as well grab the money and play in an empty stadium and save some on catering etc.

Yours sincerely

Andrew Wardle
