I didnt say we have lost the most games, I said we are the biggest losers. Cometh the hour cometh the man and the Nix will show you their true colours on all the big occasions. We are on a preposterously long run of losing every finals game (or tie, in the case of the two legged one against Victory) we play. Has any team got a lower winning percentage in finals than us? Not only do we have no trophies (when every other club has at least one) but no finals reached either. Closest thing to a final we have played in was the last Mariners game in 2023-2024 (which we lost). 100% losing record in derbies.
Yes there is also the most lost games in "cupsets" too but I think that one is a little unfair to point out, we have been uniquely disadvantaged for a long time in the Cup having to always play away and travel far against lower tier Australian sides, you would statistically expect us to have suffered the most cupsets.
No doubt about it you and your broken record just dont give up. Has there ever been such an over stated user name. Me thinks not
Nix have now lost the most cup games to non A league teams (4), and the next most is 2. We also now have the record of having the heaviest loss vs a non a league team in this cup.. A record breaking team! Mainland FC

There is either a massive lack of ambition or a massive lack of competence. The Nix are the biggest losers in the history of the A-League. Something big needs to change.
"The Nix are the biggest losers in the history of the A-League." No, they're not.
Nobody cares about the cup. Like yes it's silverware but that's about it. Even less people care we've lost the most to NPL teams.
I would rather beat AFC 2/3 times this season than win the cup. Hell id rather beat AFC 3/3 times this season than us be premiers.
The only concern I really have about this result is that we're going to lose another 3 times to AFC this season.
Incredibly small time mentality.
How? The Aus cup means so little. I can just imagine what this place would be saying if we did win it. Rather than people saying we've won nothing it would be we've won nothing important...
To this club it is way more important to beat AFC in front of 25-30k screaming fans vs winning the Aus cup in Australia in front of probably less than 10k disinterested Aussies.
That is the reason the owners have put so much emphasis on beating AFC this season. It is that important whether you like it or not.
Rather win a trophy then beating Auckland then not winning a thing, what have we been aiming for in the last 17 years before Auckland came in? beating perth glory to win the distance derby cup? come on man... anaveragestem

if you can honestly say that winning the Aus cup means more than besting AFC this season - well i guess its just a difference of opinion then. I can't understand that though. I mean the Aus cup is for the Aussies mostly (plus they hardly seem to care about it until semi finals), the derby with AFC is uniquely kiwi and has more meaning to me.
I won't bite on Perth, everyone here knows that wasn't a true derby. It had some funny moments but AFC can have the distance derby now if they like as they're further away.
Payne’s issues might be a new baby! It does make playing on a rainy night across the Tasman seem different I’d imagine…
And yes, I’m a fan of Loke (pronounced like oak?). He seems like one of those guys you’d want on your team.
Ranieri won a title.
I said a Nix version of! We came within 25 seconds and 3 metres of one…I struggle to believe that now, and probably Leceister looking at their PL trophy as they prepare for their next championship opponent feel similarly…
If we’re good enough to beat AFC 3 times on the bounce then I’d expect us to pick up the Premiers plate too.
Unless it was part of complicated negotiations with a chap with pointy ears and a tail and involved someone’s eternal souls etc, that we’d beat AFC thrice without other titles…then I’d thank you for your sacrifice and take it…all other situations we should be picking up titles if we’re that good!
Ok, After having viewed that pathetic effort and having a shark sleep afterwards as a result. I have had the whole day to stew on this.
I think these academy players whom have been in the squad for the last 2 seasons have not shown improvement or learned from any mistakes from the past. I'd consider starting Hughes up front considering his prowness in front of the wrong goal. What's that 4 OG's in a year??
These academy players may need to be dropped to the reserves to get back some confidence and learn to appreciate the opportunity that they have been given rather than taking it for granted.
Last night the only one whom seemed interested was Loke at RB. And sad to say, but our two Japanese imports showed nothing other than that they are far too lightweight and can get bossed off the ball.
Supyk for me is like Version 2 of OHV. Does a couple of tricks if he is lucky but with no end product. A good striker will hit from any range and any half chance, not try and walk the ball in. His lack of even attempting a shot is a big concern if he really wants to progress and establish himself. I mean OVH has not set the world alight in Ireland has he??
There's a CB, a Left sided player and another forward coming. I hope it is sooner than later. Rufer is back. Phew. Can't wait for Piper to be back too.
Again, these Academy players have been in the squad long enough now to start showing up, otherwise move them on. We can't keep "hoping" that they will really come up to the required standard. Yes, the pressure in on them, they have been given the chances. Whether they use them is now questionable. Do they really want to succeed?
Proud to have attended the first 175 Consecutive "Home" Wellington Phoenix "A League" Games !!
What is more important is not losing 4 zip to players who are not professional
You are 100% right with that statement. too many are letting AFC live in their heads rent free. Let it go. Let them do their own thing and if they succeed, good on them. We need to worry about things here in Wellington.
Proud to have attended the first 175 Consecutive "Home" Wellington Phoenix "A League" Games !!
Ironically out of the academy boys, Loke was the only one who showed up, and that you could argue hasn't been given a fair shake. The rest of them seem to be riding on their laurels but cant blame them when they see the example set by the "senior" members of the squad.
Perfectly legitimate goal to aim at the top team in the league and our new derby rivals. But agree we have to focus on what we’re doing. Beating ourselves up for not emulating a much more well funded club with the marketing advantage of having new club smell etc isn’t too productive.
Let’s be honest, AFC aside, there’s no one on the league playing Roarcelona ball or anything. There’s a lot of variations on hard to break down teams and teams with great presses who are doing well and more entertaining teams that have welcome mats in the midfield and ship as many as they score regularly.
There’s not a lot of great attacking local teams to emulate or aspire to.
image.png38.9 KBI mocked up an xg plot of the game. We played in black so the black line. The goals are the dots with the xg for the shots for the goals scored labelled. The first goal is the og, so xg is technically zero.
I did have a quick look for comparison with Heidelberg's game against WSW, and Heidelberg in that game had a higher xg (1.86 from 10 shots) compared to against us (0.46 from 12 shots). WSW had the same xg as us (0.84) from 15 shots, we had 14. Possession wise the games were similar as well, 69 to 31 in WSW favour and 64 to 36 in our favour. In terms of big chances, both WSW and us created only 1 against Heidelberg. Heidelberg created 3 against WSW and 2 against us.
To be fair you’d expect this team to be challenging. This is a very good starting 11. Contains answers to all the problems of our squad and got wupped 3-0 by Heidelberg. It’s fun playing the hypothetical’s situation-but on the night as shown above this rolls Royce of A league names barely registered. That’s fair context. Heidelberg is a very good side.
Edit: for context there’s at least 10-20 seasons of decent European experience in that team and then Kosta, Brilliante and Ugarkovic who are A league royalty. 10-20 because of injuries, second leagues or lower rated leagues. IMG_7279.jpeg245.18 KB

How can AFC leave our heads?
They win silverware in their first season, something we haven't been able to do in nearly 18 years, plus after we were so close ourselves, they beat us 3-0 in the derby and are on track to make it 6-0, they have had barely any bad luck or things not go their way, and now they're likely to win the AC in their first attempt, meaning they will have two pieces of silverware in less than a year since they played their inaugural A-League match.
AFC truly have been great for football in this country. In their still short history we can already see and admire their level of passion, drive, plus the fact they do play exciting football, which all tie back in to the points about their successes in the previous paragraph. However in an overall context, it does not make anything stated less infuriating, depressing, or easier to just let go of.

Back in the dark ages (2008) we nearly won the old Pre Season Cup, losing out on pens to MV. That's as close as we've ever come to winning anything at all.
The Australia Cup could well be NZs (Aucklands) Cup in a few months. If so, they will have more trophies in their cabinet then we've ever been seriously in the running to win.
One really does have to wonder what goes on at the Nix (and the Warriors, Auckland's (and NZ's) least successful pro sports team).

Hate to be so negative early, but eze looks shark… got beaten twice, poor first touch, oh boy
Unlike others here, I've not had on Rose tinted glasses with this dude. I think he's a dud and only time will prove if I'm wrong.
Well you did say more than once Wootton would be a dud, and that Ryan Thomas should just give up on football. So uneasily for the Nix, you are due.
Thankfully didn't see the game. Time to bring back the Wairarapa United pre season fixture to get some confidence back.
Actually I'm quite happy that Thomas is proving me wrong, but until he gets through a serious amount of games, he still looks like a younger Danny Hay to me.
(I'm praying his injuries are behind him as the AWs need him BIG TiME).
As for Wootten, he was done in the UK but did well in NZ. Will he do so well in WA?

Watching the other games in the cup makes it even harder to stomach what our team has become under Chief... There's some great football being played, stunning goals scored, strikers who are on fire, amazing team spirit and I could go on. We've got none of that.
You can say what you want about Rudan, but when he came in he totally changed all that, brought in the right players and created that buzz and excitement. Was one of my favourite Nix teams ever with Taylor at the back.

Xg is a useful stat aggregated over an entire season, it's near useless in individual games. People just use it completely wrong.

My favourite, xG from a blocked penalty is approx 1.6, 0.8 for the initial penalty plus another high number for getting to the ball and shooting again one on one with the keeper from close range.
A more telling stat is that the highlights video on youtube only included one Nix shooting attempt, LBS kicking high over the bar when one on one.
If I have understood the Chiefy plan over the last few years correctly, on attack he would rather have a few high xG attempts than many low xG attempts, and on defence restrict opposition to low xG attempts.

you can use non-pen xg, as you're right a pen is worth like 0.86, and xg doesn't tell the total context of a shot, such as time and space around them, which when you look at the two low xg goals they both had time and space to pick their spots - whereas most of our efforts were under at least some pressure

If you look at us what could we have changed?
Cutting edge- well Kosta, Kraev and Kuol is a strong strike force. We’ve been bemoaning losing two of them and we’d very take the other! DM to shut down their shooting- Brillante and Ugarkovic top 3 there potentially. Goalkeeper to do better on long shots- Thomas has been a Socceroo and number one in a good European league for two recent seasons.
And this team couldn’t get a shot or stop the goals.
