I think you'll find that BW aren't halal.

Someone better tell him KFC aren't halal in NZ.

Not that I know how seriously Bambang takes his religious dietary obligations, but I remember last year FIANZ pulled Nando's halal certification for a few months. The resulting drama is probably why my local branch (in quite a Muslim part of town) closed down.

Few relevant issues have to be sorted out before Bambang is sigend up with WP. Fasting for 30 days and from sunrise to dusk during Ramadan, Muslim food and everything halal and this may affect the performance of an athlete like him.

saw Bambang at training today and wasn't really impressed.
However, that's the first I see of him on the pitch so I am not calling it yet.

doesn't really look like he'll be signed. although i wouldnt be worried if we did just to make up the places. Commercially he could be a good signing

Haven't we got all the places?

I would want to see him signed up if he is what we need and he can fit in well with the club.

Commercially -would only be a good signing if he performed well on the field.

Hello Mr. Angus,

Last November (ah, the memories!) I happened to bump into a few Bahraini players including Hamad Al Montashari and asked them how it works with Ramadan if they have a fixture, etc. He said that their final qualifier (2nd leg) again Saudi Arabia had been during Ramadan and that didn't stop his scoring his last gasp goal

I'm not sure on the exact rulings about sportspeople and Ramadan - there may well be a legitimate ruling which allows NOT to fast on match days and "make up" this day of fasting on another day.

If he gets in I can try to find out more information just for interest's sake. Ramadan is set to start this Thursday

Yep, rumblings from Ricki don't really sound that positive.

We just have to introduce him to some Wellington sounds in his chill out and psych up prematch routine...

he sounded cool, but attitude is everything...if he doesn't mind doing some hard yards as well as fizzing...no reason why he couldn't force a way into the starting 11 with the right attitude- might not be consistent this year, but should aim to be a definite starter next year and be a first choice squad player this year and getting on in many games...

Let's face it- Daniel, Toto and Disco are some competition. He would have to earn his spurs, but no reason why he couldn't. A quick goal scorer ie KOSTA! is a spot we are missing...

I am no expert on Ramadan or Islam in general but I'm pretty sure there are exemptions for certain folks during Ramadan - and sportspeople are included. I remember the New Zealand cricket team toured Bangladesh during Ramadan and this issue was brought up, and I'm sure I remember someone mentioned the players had to drink etc.

that media release is about nothing! its almost like they made it up just so they could bury the Bambang not signed para at the bottom (and underneath the AWs announcement).

Stuffed some Dura quotes in there and put the one liner about Bambang in the bottom. Clever.

Thanks Mr. Bambang. It was fun dreaming. All the best to you in your future.

P.S. Please tell PSSI that Indonesia should come to Wellington for a friendly match and insya Allah we can meet then!

1. I'm really disappointed that Bambang didn't work out - signing an Asian player would have sent a very positive message to the AFC.

In saying that I have no reason to think the decision wasn't the right one for the team and I'm glad the club had the balls to make the tough call in the face of the political benefits. Hopefully the continued search for an Asian signing will bear fruit.

2. Since Tony left the press releases have looked like the typical press release you get from a "suit". Not having a go but less "comms speak" and more "real person" please.

He dribbles a lot and the opposition dont like it - you can see it all over their faces. (Ron Atkinson)

Aren't we all assuming that this was the Phoenix's decision not his ?

I mean, he could stay at home in the warmth and be a hero to millions guaranteed a start every week or he could freeze to death here and possibly not get near the playing squad...

How's my driving? - Whine here

I have to say that although I understand that he has to be very careful what he says publicly during negotiations, his Twitter talk was never particularly positive (this is pure speculation reading in between the lines).

your doing well, i couldn't even read on the lines

actually, even in translation they seemed pretty bloody cryptic

If we're after Asian players, I like the Koreans. We see a few of them in the A League and NZFC and I get the impression they are pretty robust and more suited to the physical nature of our game than other Asians. I base that view on absolutely no empirical evidence at all.

The Korean League pays well though, harder to pry the top guys away

absolutely, I was just about to say the same thing. yep the K-League pays well but still within our reach.

here's hoping Ricki keeps his radar to Asia over the next few months, we don't necessarily need to sign another striker straight away...  but could be a great wild card to sign a K-league or J-league player just as we are closing in on the playoffs, and cost less too   ;-)

K-league ends in November so the timing is perfect.

The football we play is physical, pastoral and rugby-like. So, the main criteria have to be on size and height rather than skills. An Asian player needs to be ultra skilful to compensate for the lack in size and height. That explains why NZ natioanl age-group teams (male and female) are all huge and tall, not that technical or skilful! Now, prove me wrong.

But we're talking about the A-League.

There are some smaller players who perform well.

This chap Kosta for the Roar, he looks handy...
