I forsee a bunch of eggball black shirts turning up to the game.

Which is fine, cause once they've experienced the atmosphere, they'll be leaving in a bright yellow stripey.

This.

The heart play in red and white don't they?

Also, "Black out the heart" carries an alternative meaning that we want to shut them out?

What a we trying to achieve with this. Hey Melbourne, we have black hearts. Its all about you.

It should be about the bloody Phoenix not the opposition.

Yep. We get that Jeff.

It's happening. Like it or not. You can bleat about it if you like, but for better or for worse, it's out there now. It's not going to get changed. It might not be your idea of a perfect marketing idea, but it's hardly the absolute worst idea they could have put forward, is it?

We know we are the YELLOW fever. We don't need to be threatened by this proposal. We'll still be the yellow fever afterwards, and we'll still be vibrant and relevant and just as fat and uncouth as we were before.

The marketing people are not trying to change the Yellow fever here. Their target is the marginal fans, the ones who may or may not come along. They are trying to build attendances, and get those people along to the game, which SURELY we all want to see happen too?

I don't know if this is the BEST way to do this. But it's what they have decided to try. It might even work. Let's not preordain that it is going to be a failure. How do we know? Let's not be part of making it fail either. Let's get behind it, and support the club by helping to make it a booming success.

Imagine if the team are going to be in on the effort, and are going to wear a special one off black strip... perhaps like the away strip, but with black with yellow trim instead of white with yellow trim? Or maybe they are going to wear a season one style strip?

Maybe that's the special surprise that's going to unvieled at kick off time?

Let's say it is the plan? Won't we look a bit silly in the fever zone if we've done a Yellow Out and the rest of the stadium has brought into this idea and are are decked out in black?

Support the marketing team who are trying really hard to make our club successful and trying to build up our attendance figures.

This is utter crap. The club can only exist if it has fans. That's us. We've stayed loyal throughout enormous recent turmoil, and the least these muppets could have done was float their 'idea' on here for discussion.

The principal reason for the existence of marketing is to promote a brand, which conceivably could mean selling team paraphernalia- so some bright spark has come up with the idea of promoting the philosophy that people don't go out and buy our team gear, but instead wear old rugby shirts.

I don't like rugby, I follow football. I am a season pass holder for my team, the Wellington Phoenix, who play in yellow and black.

Marginal fans should be actively encouraged to don yellow and black, the club (and Wellington) colours. They can give a prize to the person in the best yellow and black outfit, just the same.

Can you imagine an announcement at Anfield that the next home game everyone has to wear blue? Give me bloody strength.......

As a first foray into a major marketing exercise by Welnix this is an utter, abject failure.
I will wear my Phoenix gear as I always do. They can stick this pseudo-rugby stunt so far that it won't see daylight for a millenium.

There, I feel a little better now. NURSE!!!

Nostalgia isnt what it used to be...........

Could someone tell me why this has anything to do with Rugby? Or wearing old rugby shirts? Could I not wear my black Warriors jersey? Or my Black Caps shirt which is black? My Kiwis jersey. What if they said 'everyone show up wearing a black NZ track and field singlet'? Guess what? New Zealands sport predominant colour is black and if they can grow the brand nationwide by tapping into that then why not? Would people rather they took games on the road to try and build it nationally?

For what it is worth I do think it is a silly idea but maybe it is getting people prepared for another home playoff game with everyone in yellow?

Im going to suggest that a few people have their hackles up because they percieve this as having something to do with Rugby and Rugby is the devil?

Not sure what makes this a rugby-themed promotion.

As bopman quite rightly points out, Black is a NZ colour, not own trademarked by the NZRFU.

And how is a blackout a rugby idea anyway? They don't have own the idea of encouraging the wearing a team colour to a match?

Westpac has had blackouts. It's had a whiteout. And here's to many more Yell-outs in the future.

I don't like the sinister tones of black shirts.  Since I think Tim has been pilloried by all and sundry I am going to show my support by wearing a brown shirt.

Wouldnt it be better if we get behind what the club is trying to do? Rather than alienate ourselves from the rest of the fanbase?

I won't be wearing black (unless my season 1 strip still fits....). But thats more because I don't actually own any casual black shirts, and don't feel the need to go out of my way to get one just for a promotion.

Agreed, I think the only people linking this to rugby are the people on the forum. Black is not only a national colour but one of the two Phoenix colours so it's hardly that far from the mark.

While I don't think this is a great promotion and there should be more talk between the club and YF (we are the best source of support and free marketing they could hope for) it's hardly blasphemy. In my opinion no harm in getting behind this other than to put the club off trying things in future. I hope to see much better efforts but at least they are trying something for now....
